    OVERVIEW OF VISAKHAPATNAM UDA'S ACTIVITIES OVERVIEW OF VUDA, VISAKHAPATNAM The Town Planning Trust (TPT) was constituted in 1962 and the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority comes into existence in 1978 under AP Urban Areas (Dev) Act, 1975 for the areas covering Visakhapatnam, Gajuwaka, Bheemunipatnam, Anakapalle and Vizianagaram Municipalities and 287 villages with an extent of 1721 Sq.Kms. Prasad3 1,2,3Department of Geo-Engineering, College of Engineering (A), Andhra University, Visakhapatnam-530 003 ABSTRACT: The study deals with physico-chemical characteristics of groundwater in the environs of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh. The study area covering about 1143 km2 is famous for major industries, often called as Industrial City or Visakha Steel City. Haphazard urbanization, industrialization and improper disposal of solid wastes leading to contamination of groundwater, have been focused in this study. The improper and unscientific solid waste dumps in the unlined sewage drains drive pollutants into the groundwater regime which is an irrevocable loss and literally not possible to bring the quality of groundwater to its original state. In this study, about 25 groundwater samples were collected covering the entire area during August 2011. The water samples were analyzed to identify the parameters of physical, chemical and trace metals on the basis of APHA standard methodology. Trace metals of Al, Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Cd, Pb and Co are in high content in areas like Akkireddypalem, Balacheruvu and Lankelapalem. These areas are in the vicinity of industries like Hindustan Zinc Ltd. and Visakha steel plant. Systematic work has not been carried out to discover the reasons for the accumulation of higher toxicants in these areas.

It coordinates the development activities of the Municipal Corporation, Municipalities and other local authorities. VUDA, up to 2008, had its jurisdiction of 1721 sq.km., comprising 5 urban centres viz., Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Ankapalli, Bheemunipatnam and Gajuwaka and 287 villages. It is referred to as Erstwhile Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region (VMR). Considering the developmental pressure and to further promote planned development, the VUDA vide Government G.O.No.525, dated 30.7.2008, extended its jurisdiction limits By 3852.51 sq.km to 5573 sq.km, with a population of 4.2 million (as per 2001 census).The present VUDA area comprises 1281 villages, 7 Municipalities and 1 Nagar Panchayat in Districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari. As a planning apex body, VUDA is playing a vital role in development of the region. So far VUDA has taken up 51 Nos. of Layouts (including Town Planning Trust approved layouts). The layouts were approved as per the then rules in vogue. Till 1986, it was insisted to have 5% of the total layout are a towards the layout open space. Subsequently, while preparing the master plan in the year 1986, it was incorporated in the zoning regulations to have 10% of the reserved open space in all layouts.
