The Indian Roots of Pure Land Buddhism: Insights from the Oldest Chinese Versions of the Larger Sukhåvat∆vy¥ha Jan Nattier Indiana University MASATOSHI NAGATOMI WAS a panoramic thinker. Raised in a Jødo Shinsh¥ family, he chose the distant world of Indian Buddhism as his research field. Educated at Kyoto University, he went on to complete his doctorate at Harvard University, spending time studying in India as well. When thinking about Indian Buddhist literature he could call upon analo- gies from East Asia; when discussing Buddhist rituals in China he could draw upon his knowledge of Tibet. In sum, for him Buddhism was not a regional or sectarian entity but a worldwide and multi-faceted tradi- tion, and no student of his could fail to be impressed by the broad range of his perspective. Most students of Pure Land Buddhism, by contrast, have approached their topic within a far narrower frame. Generally this form of Buddhism has been treated as an East Asian phenomenon, and indeed it is often studied (with, one should recognize, many valuable results) within the parameters of a single school or sect. This paper, however, is intended as a small attempt to emulate Professor Nagatomi’s sweeping cross-cultural vision of Buddhist history by examining the evidence for Pure Land Buddhism not in East Asia, but in India. To understand how Amitåbha was viewed by Indian Buddhists, however, requires beginning with a sketch of the circumstances within which scriptures devoted to this figure emerged. I will begin, therefore, with a brief overview of some of the key developments that preceded— and indeed, may have elicited—the composition of scriptures devoted to Amitåbha. -

The Sutra travelled from India to Khotan and thence to China. I-tsing translated the Sutra on Imperial orders of Empress Wu in Nov.703. Nine chapters of the Suv. are represented in Khotanese murals or annals: preamble of ch.1(Five Great Goddesses), ch.3 (the drum of desana or preaching of Dharma, in the Naghara-khanah), ch.6 (the Four Lokapalas), ch.8 (Sri mahadevi), ch.10 (Earth Goddess), ch.11 (General Samjnaya and Twentyeight Yaksa Generals), Golden Light (chin-kuang-ming) and Samjnaya, ch.12 (textbook on polity), ch.14 (protection by Yaksas), and Hariti in shrine D II at Dandan-uiliq. Dandan-uiliq was one of the six commanderies of Khotan, and had a Chinese Imperial garrison commander. Hence a major shrine D II to Vaisravana and Hariti, who were the chief protective deities of Khotan. Suvarnabhasottama, sovereignty and security The Suv. is an important Buddhist sutra to ensure sovereignty, the dynamics of governance inherent in the nexus of the king, his people, and their deities symbolising values, to effect the security of economy, and to preempt natural calamities, diseases, and wars. -

( 18 ) Journal of Indian and Buddhist Studies, Vol. 52, No. 2, March 2004 Some Aspects of the Cult of Aksobhya in Mahayana Scriptures Naomi SATO 1 Introduction : As the terms Aksobhya or Abhirati are mentioned in many Maha- yana scriptures1),we can assume that the Buddha Aksobhya and his eastern buddha- field Abhirati were quite popular when they were composed. Although most of the texts use these two words without any explanations, only a few of them provide any details : the *Aksobhyavyuha-sutra(AV) 2), the main and oldest text which is fully devoted to explaining the Buddha Aksobhya's career and the merits of Abhirati, the early Prajnaparamita-sutra group (e. g. AstasahasrikaPrajnaparamita-sutra (AstP)), the Vimalakirtinirdesa-sutra(Vn), the Saddharmapundarika-sutra (Sp), the Karuna- pundarika-sutra (Kp) and the Mahaparinirvana-sutra (Mp). In this paper, I would like to examine the latter five texts to see how Mahayana scriptures besides Av de- scribe the cult of Aksobhyaand the universe (lokadhatu)Abhirati. I used the Sanskrit edition primarily, or the oldest Tibetan and Chinese translations when a Sanskrit text has not survived to the present. 2 Astasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra : AstP is one of the earliest Mahayana scrip- tures, and is known as the first to use the term mahayana. The Larger Sukhavativyuha is also a famous early Mahayana scripture written about the Buddha Amitabha (or Amitayus)and his buddha-field (buddhaksetra).AstP never refers to the Buddha Amitabha (or Amitayus),whereas the Larger Sukhavativyuhadoes not mention the perfection of wisdom (prajnaparamita).Thus they are assumed to be in a different group at the very beginning of the Mahayana Buddhism. -

Pure Land Or Pure Mind?: Locus of Awakening and American Popular Religious Culture
Journal of Global Buddhism Vol. 16 (2015): 16-32 Research Article Pure Land or Pure Mind?: Locus of Awakening and American Popular Religious Culture Richard K. Payne, Institute of Buddhist Studies This essay has two sections, each with its own distinct goal, forming an interrelated whole. The first introduces “locus of awakening,” and applies it to the relative success in America of Zen and Tibetan Buddhisms, compared to Pure Land Buddhism. The explanatory power of the concept is demonstrated by also considering Soka Gakkai. The difference between popular culture treatments of Zen and Tibetan Buddhisms, and Pure Land Buddhism was the problematic leading to identifying locus of awakening as an aspect of Buddhist thought. The second section locates it in the history of Buddhist thought, demonstrating that it is not a modern conceptualization of the path, not one created in response to Euro–American religio-therapeutic culture. Locus of awakening is, instead, part of the continuity of the Buddhist tradition, and does not fall on one side or the other of the sometimes overdrawn dichotomy between Asian and American Buddhisms. Keywords: Pure Land; Zen; Tibetan Buddhism; Shin Buddhism; Soka Gakkai; popular religion; Buddhism in the West his essay introduces a conceptual tool that will help us to understand the history of Buddhism as it has developed in the West, and elsewhere as well, in a more adequately nuanced fashion than previously. The traditional classification of TBuddhist teachings into sudden (sometimes also called “leap”) and gradual (also, “path”) is only one dimension of Buddhist thought. Out of the traditional classification of Buddhist praxis (i.e., practice and doctrine taken as an integrated whole) into the three dimensions of ground, path and goal, the sudden–gradual distinction articulates a dimension of the path, and is therefore, only partially effective as an analytic tool for understanding Buddhist praxis as it is being adapted and adopted in the United States today. -
Herent Narrative That Reveals the Principles of Its Compositional Structure and the Underlying Doctrinal Core
The Bajaur Mahāyāna Sūtra. A Preliminary Analysis of Its Contents Andrea Schlosser and Ingo Strauch Introduction The Bajaur Mahāyāna Sūtra is the conventional name for fragment 2 of the Bajaur Collection of Kharoṣṭhī manuscripts.1 The present article is based on the authors’ ongoing edition of this text that is being prepared as a collaborative project between the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Munich, and the Chair of Buddhist Studies, University of Lausanne. The complete reconstructed text, its representation in the form of a Sanskrit word-by-word rendering (chāyā), and its preliminary translation will be made available in an online version at the beginning of 2017.2 This procedure will enable the interested public to participate in the editorial progress before a final publication in print will appear within the next few years. At the same time, it will get scholars from different fields of Buddhist Studies involved in the study of this text. Exploring a text like this – without any direct parallels in other traditions of Buddhist literature and relating to a large number of texts in a mul- titude of languages and different genres, e.g. Mahāyāna, Āgama, and Abhidharma literature – can only be a collective endeavour.
