Daniel Mai Is the 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Champion www.mathcounts.org Vol. 39 Issue 2 Daniel Mai is the 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Champion Daniel Mai was set up for a nail-biting final match-up. He had traveled from his home- town of Acton, Mass. to Orlando, Fla. for his second appearance at the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition. He had just emerged victorious from a notoriously long 11-minute semifinals match—one where neither he nor semifi- nalist Sam Wang from Virginia buzzed in with a correct answer for six questions in a row. He was up against Suyash Pandit, the underdog from Oregon who had won the first match of the day, plus his quarter- final and semifinal match-ups to qualify for the finals. Level-headed on stage, 13-year-old Dan- iel knew the answer was 24—and it only took him 22.53 seconds to figure it out. Massachusetts coach Josh Frost de- scribes Daniel as humble and hardwork- ing, and it shows in his response to his success. How did he feel after the big win? “Very tired,” Daniel said. After such an action-packed weekend, his response was understandable. The 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS Na- tional Competition began with three rounds of written tests on Sunday, May 12, requiring students to work both in- dividually and collaboratively in their four-person state teams. On Monday, May 13, the 12 students with the highest scores on the Written Competition advanced to the Countdown Round, hosted for the second year by actor, author and audiobook narrator Wil Wheaton. This final round challenged students in fast-paced one-on-one match-ups in which competitors had at most 45 seconds to answer each question. Rankings for the Countdown Round also were determined by the students’ scores on the Written Competition. Daniel was one of four individuals with the highest written scores who received a bye in the first match of the Countdown Round, along with Written Competition Champion Jeff Lin, an eighth grader from Lexington, Mass.; eighth grader William Chen from Fremont, Calif., and seventh grader Jessica Wan from San Juan, P.R. Daniel was one of 224 Mathletes from across the country who competed at the 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS Na- tional Competition on May 12–13 at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista at the Walt Disney World Resort. National competitors represented all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense and State Department. As the National Champion, Daniel received the $20,000 Donald G. Weinert Scholarship and will appear on “Live! With Kelly & Ryan” on June 7, where he will compete against hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest in a math compe- tition. After that? Daniel has some ideas. His dream is “to find the cure for cancer. I want to do this to better society so that we can live longer and this way, society would have new innovations and progress faster.” With Daniel’s prob- lem-solving skills and ambition, winning the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is just the beginning. Synthesis of SiO2-Br nanoparticles. SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized according to a previously 1 reported method. First, ethanol (400 mL) and NH3·H2O (25 wt % in water, 21 mL) were mixed in a three-necked round-bottom flask and stirred for 10 min at 40 °C. Then 20 mL TEOS was added and stirred for 10 h at 40 °C to obtain SiO2 nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm. 4 ml of APTES was dropped in a three-necked flask for 2 h and then the temperature was raised to 85 °C for 3 h.

MATHCOUNTS Competition Series: A grassroots network of more than 17,000 volunteers organize MATHCOUNTS competitions nationwide. Each year over 500 local competitions and 56 "state" competitions are conducted, primarily by chapter and state societies of the National Society of Professional Engineers. In Maryland, we are 100% volunteer led. There are no paid positions. All contributions go directly to supporting the purchase of trophies, tee-shirts, buttons, patches, etc. to make the day memorable for the Mathletes. Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use.

By analyzing the social and linguistic influences of the reception and adaptation of Chinese vernacular fiction, I hope to improve our understanding of genre development and linguistic diversification in early modern Japanese literature. This dissertation historically and linguistically contextualizes the vernacularization movements and adaptations of Chinese texts in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, showing how literary importation and localization were essential stimulants and also a paradigmatic shift that generated new platforms for Japanese literature. Chapter 1 places the early introduction of vernacular Chinese language in its social and cultural contexts, focusing on its route of propagation from the Nagasaki translator community to literati and scholars in Edo, and its elevation from a utilitarian language to an object of literary and political interest. Central figures include Okajima Kazan (1674-1728) and Ogyû Sorai (1666-1728). Chapter 2 continues the discussion of the popularization of vernacular Chinese among elite intellectuals, represented by the Ken’en School of scholars and their Chinese study group, “the Translation Society.” This chapter discusses the methodology of the study of Chinese by surveying a number of primers and dictionaries compiled for reading vernacular Chinese and comparing such material with methodologies for reading classical Chinese.

    2013 Maryland State MATHCOUNTS Competition at Johns Hopkins University On Saturday, March 16, 2013, 28 official school teams of four mathletes each and 81 official individuals (193 official mathletes total) along with 35 unofficial alternates from 61 schools across Maryland competed in the Maryland Society of Professional Engineer’s Annual Maryland State MATHCOUNTS Competition at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. These middle school students were the select top finishers from more than 750 mathletes from 111 schools who competed in February at the County level to move to the State Competition. MATHCOUNTS is a national mathematics competition for sixth, seventh and eight grade students with the purpose of increasing enthusiasm for and enhancing achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. Developed in 1983 as the first nationwide program of its kind, MATHCOUNTS combines the efforts of volunteers, educators, industry sponsors, the government and the technology community to promote math excellence among middle school students. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to provide fun and challenging math programs for US middle school students to increase their academic and professional opportunities. A grassroots network of more than 17,000 volunteers organize MATHCOUNTS competitions nationwide. Each year over 500 local competitions and 56 "state" competitions are conducted, primarily by chapter and state societies of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The Maryland State competition on March 16th began at 9:30 am with the Sprint Round comprised of 30 questions in a 40-minute time frame and assuming no calculators. Next came the Target round, which included four pairs of questions, each pair receiving six minutes to solve the two problems and with the use of calculators allowed.

There is 景观 jǐng guān – scenery view. An old meaning of 景 jǐng is light, luminous. So, literally 景观 jǐng guān means luminous view. The term is generally used when referring to foreign educational programmes in landscape architecture. Traditionally, university departments in China indicate an engagement with ideas of landscape with the characters 园林 yuán lín – garden forests. These are the characters for the classical Chinese gardens. The characters 风景 fēng jǐng, that literally translate to wind scenery, or wind light as the French sinologist François Jullien suggests2, are also fairly common. Landscape in painting is referred to as 山水 shān shuǐ – mountain(s) water(s) – but also as 山川 shān chuān – mountain(s) river(s). The attentive reader will have noticed that the Chinese language always employs a pair of characters to refer to landscape.
