    XIX.—Reginald, bishop of Bath (HJJfUgi); his episcopate, and his share in the building of the church of Wells. By the Rev. C. M. CHURCH, M.A., F.8.A., Sub-dean and Canon Residentiary of Wells. I VENTURE to think that bishop Eeginald Fitzjocelin deserves a place of higher honour in the history of the diocese, and of the fabric of the church of Wells, than has hitherto been accorded to him. His memory has been obscured by the traditionary fame of bishop Robert as the "author," and of bishop Jocelin as the "finisher," of the church of Wells; and the importance of his episcopate as a connecting link in the work of these two master-builders has been comparatively overlooked. The only authorities followed for the history of his episcopate have been the work of the Canon of Wells, printed by Wharton, in his Anglia Sacra, 1691, and bishop Godwin, in his Catalogue of the Bishops of England, 1601—1616. But Wharton, in his notes to the text of his author, comments on the scanty notice of bishop Reginald ;a and Archer, our local chronicler, complains of the unworthy treatment bishop Reginald had received from Godwin, also a canon of his own cathedral church.b a Reginaldi gesta historicus noster brevius quam pro viri dignitate enarravit. BY BEV. T. S. FBAMPTON, M.A. LETTERS of Presentation to Benefices from the Sovereign are of frequent occurrence throughout the Patent Eolls. They were generally given either by reason of the preferment being Crown patronage, or through a vacancy in the See, though there were other grounds for the exercise of the right. The Patent Eolls commence with the 3rd year of King John. Those for the 10th, 11th, and 12th years of his reign are unfortunately missing, which is all the more to be regretted by the student of Kentish Ecclesiastical History, as during the whole of that time the Temporalities of the See of Canterbury were in the King's hands, and he disposed of all preferments belonging to the Archbishop which happened to fall vacant. The Rolls for the 23rd and 24th years of King Henry III. are also missing. With these exceptions the series is complete throughout. The Patent Rolls for King John's reign were printed in verbal facsimile, and with admirable Indexes of Persons and Places, in the year 1835, under the direction of the Public Record Commissioners. Those for the reign of King Henry III. have not yet been so treated. The Presentations given below are valuable, as being earlier in date than any Institutions entered in the Registers of the Archbishops in Lambeth Palace Library, which commence with the accession of Archbishop Peckham in the year 1279.

    Pioneer Project 2018-2025 Strategic Development Funding Application Stage 2 – Project Plan 3 November 2017 Foreword by the Bishop of Bath and Wells When I think about the word ‘pioneer’ my thoughts immediately go to the Book of Hebrews where we read: ‘Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.’ (Chapter 12: 1 & 2). These words present Jesus as the ‘trailblazer’ or ‘pathfinder’ who goes before us in all things, who makes all things new and who has opened for us the way back to God. It pictures Jesus as an athlete who has run the race, who has kept the faith and who, by his death and resurrection, has become Lord of heaven and earth. By definition ‘pioneering’ is never easy and to be successful this project will require much more than financial investment. It will require courage, determination and prayer. In undertaking this our minds will be stretched, our faith tested and our vision extended. We will certainly have to fix our eyes on Jesus who promises to walk with us and watch over us. I am extremely grateful to the Church Commissioners for the finances they have made available to enable dioceses to fulfil the hopes and aspirations which Jesus the pioneer is placing before us. As together we seek to proclaim the gospel afresh to this generation may we discover anew what it is to live and tell the story of Jesus.     House of Bishops’ Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests Lullington with Orchardleigh: Report of the Independent Reviewer Introduction 1. On 25 September Mr Simon McKie wrote to put me on behalf of the PCC of Lullington and Orchardleigh, a parish in the Diocese of Bath and Wells which has a resolution in place under the House of Bishops’ Declaration of 2014. The purpose of his letter was to put me on notice that a grievance would be coming to me following a decision taken by the acting Bishop of Bath and Wells1 earlier that month to provide arrangements under the Declaration that the PCC regarded as inadequate both as to form and substance. 2. On 3 November Mr McKie duly submitted to me a grievance running to 271 pages, with supporting material in appendices constituting a further 817 pages. Having studied the extensive material I concluded that the grievance fell within the scope of the Regulations made by the House of Bishops under Canon C 29 and that I therefore needed to carry out a review under Regulation 18 to determine whether the grievance was justified, partly justified or unjustified. 3. The grievance catalogues a number of alleged failures by the Bishop of Bath and Wells and subsequently by the acting bishop over a four year period. Some of these are very recent while others stretch back to the time when the PCC passed a resolution under the Declaration on 26 October 2016. Under the Regulations a PCC is normally expected to bring a grievance within three months of the alleged action or omission.

It stands in a vale of green meadow, wood, and stream, as sentinel at the gate of the hills which fold themselves behind it at the entrance of the deep combe which winds eastward through the steep and wooded banks of Cros- combe and B owlish to the topmost ridge of Doulting. It stands at the gate of the hills where the stream which has come down through the combe from the well of St. Aldhelm at Doulting, breaks out into the meadows of the valley. ^Denren,’ Valley of the Stream,^ is the earliest form of name of the hamlet which grew up at the outlet of the Doulting stream—^ Den,’ valley, and ^ren’ or ^ryne’ (common word in Somerset for water-course), became Dynr, Dyndra, Dynder, in the changes of pronunciation and writing.^ (1). Professor Earle writes to me, “ Supposing Denren to be the oldest form, I see nothing better than your proposed etymology, viz., ‘den,’ valley, and ‘ ren,’ ‘ ’ stream. The commonest word for a water-course is Ryne cursus ; from the word ‘run’ currere ; and this word is also written ‘rene,’ and as second part to a name, ‘ ren ’ is no more curtailed than might be expected. Then there is a satisfactory way of accounting for the loss of the ‘ n ’ in that habit of elid- ing final syllables that looked like old inflections, and ‘ en ’ was pre-eminently such a syllable.
