ABSTRACT The thesis consists of a biography of Ulpian Fulwell (1546-1586) and a critical edition of The Art of Flattery (1576). The biography contains new material derived from documents at the Public Record Office and the Gloucester Diocesan Registry, giving new information on Fulwell ! s family background and his career as a clergyman. It is argued that the conflict between the townspeople of Wells and the Cathedral clergy provides the background and impetus for Fulwell f s satire in The Art of Flattery. The critical edition of The Art of Flattery outlines the printing history of the book and discusses the variants between the first and second editions, and between the two copies of the first edition. The identification of the Archdeacon of Wells attacked in the Fifth Dialogue is attempted. The Literary Introduction sets Fulwell f s satirical dialogues in the context of Lucian, the colloquies of Erasmus, and the English Renaissance dialogues of More, Elyot and Ascham. A critical analysis of the work traces its form to the bipartite structure of classical verse satire, with its confrontation between Author and Adversarius. BIOGRAPHY OF ULPIAN FULWELL, 15^6-1586 There are several biographical notices of Ulpian Fulwell, starting in the late seventeenth century with Anthony a Wood's Athenae Oxoniensist but most of them have errors, and all have omissions. Irving Ribner made the most important contribution to the understanding of Fulwell's family background and the object of his satire in The Art of Flattery in his two articles in Notes and Queries in 1950 and 1951t based on the discovery of a series of lav/suits in the Public Record Office by Ribner and C.J. Sisson. However, none of the former biographers of Fulwell consulted the Gloucester Diocesan Registry for information on Pulwell's career as a clergymanj and there are lawsuits concerning the Fulwell family in the Public Record Office which Ribner did not find. This biographical sketch will contain new material, and will correct minor errors of earlier biographers, FORMER BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES Anjthony a Wood's pioneer effort in 1691, although boasting to be 'An exact history of all the Writers and Bishops who have had their education in the most ancient and famous University of Oxford... Representing the birth, fortune, preferment, and death of all those Authors and Prelates, the great accidents of their lives, and the fate and 1 character of their writings', was based on very slender 1. Athenae Oxonienses, Vol. I (1691; WingW3382), title page. information - the matriculation register of Oxford; two out of Fulwell's three works; Speed's reference to him in his Chroniclet and, most interestingly, oral history! that 'he was esteemed a person of ingenuity by his contemporaries' at Oxford (Athenae Oxonienses, edited by Philip Bliss, *f vols (London, 1813-1820), I, 5*K>). Wood mistakenly states Fulwell's age on matriculation to be thirty-two instead of thirty-three, as stated in the register (below p. 9 ) - the first of a series of minor errors that dog his biography. Wood knew of only later editions of two of Fulwell's works, and his chronology is consequently confused* he states that while Fulwell was resident at St Mary's Hall, his Oxford college, 'he partly wrote* The Art of Flattery, printed in 15?9. Fulwell nay inleed while at Oxford have revised this book for the second edition (1579)» but the first edition was published in 15?6. 'Afterwards, having learned the art of poetry among the academicians,' Wood continues, Fulwell then 'wrote and published* his interlude, Like Will to Like; Wood was unaware of the first edition of 1568, written well before Fulwell went up to Oxford in 1579* Wood realized that Fulwell must have written something else, for his 'name...stands

I VENTURE to think that bishop Eeginald Fitzjocelin deserves a place of higher honour in the history of the diocese, and of the fabric of the church of Wells, than has hitherto been accorded to him. His memory has been obscured by the traditionary fame of bishop Robert as the "author," and of bishop Jocelin as the "finisher," of the church of Wells; and the importance of his episcopate as a connecting link in the work of these two master-builders has been comparatively overlooked. The only authorities followed for the history of his episcopate have been the work of the Canon of Wells, printed by Wharton, in his Anglia Sacra, 1691, and bishop Godwin, in his Catalogue of the Bishops of England, 1601—1616. This flower is called Anemone because the wind helps the flowering and its decline. Adonis:It would be an omission if we do not mention that there is a flower named Adonis, which has medicinal properties. According to the myth, this flower is familiar to us as poppy meadows with the beautiful red colour. (Adonis blood). Iris: The flower got its name from the Greek goddess Iris, goddess of the rainbow.

In this field Ammianus had a “schein- haftes Bescheidwissen” and empty words had to conceal his “Unkenntniss”, according to the same Mommsen. Mommsen’s article, written in reaction to V. Gardthausen’s Die geographischen Quellen Ammians , which expressed a more positive opinion, had a great impact. Soon Mommsen’s unfavourable view of Ammianus’ knowledge of geography was widely accepted and has for a long time not been seriously disputed. The Res Gestae of the fourth-century historian Ammianus Marcellinus started where Tacitus had left off, that is in the year C.E. with the reign of Nerva, and ended at the year . The work originally consisted of books, but the first books have unfortunately been lost. The extant books cover only some twenty-five years of Roman history, namely the years from to . Thus Ammianus wrote the history of his own time, of which he himself was not only a part but also an eyewitness, since he was present at several important events of this period.

Was Shakespeare collaborating with an inferior playwright or playwrights? Did he allow so many corrupt printed versions of his works after 1604 out of indifference? Re-dating Pericles from the Jacobean to the Elizabethan era answers these questions and reveals previously unexamined connections between topical references in Pericles and events and personalities in the court of Elizabeth I: John Dee, Philip Sidney, Edward de Vere, and many others. The tournament impresas, alchemical symbolism of the story, and its lunar and astronomical imagery suggest Pericles was written long before 1608. Finally, Shakespeare’s focus on father-daughter relationships, and the importance of Marina, the daughter, as the heroine of the story, point to Pericles as written for a young girl. This thesis uses topical references, Shakespeare’s anachronisms, Shakespeare’s sources, stylometry and textual analysis, as well as Henslowe’s diary, the Stationers' Register, and other contemporary documentary evidence to determine whether there may have been versions of Pericles circulating before the accepted date of 1608.

    The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety.

BY BEV. T. S. FBAMPTON, M.A. LETTERS of Presentation to Benefices from the Sovereign are of frequent occurrence throughout the Patent Eolls. They were generally given either by reason of the preferment being Crown patronage, or through a vacancy in the See, though there were other grounds for the exercise of the right. The Patent Eolls commence with the 3rd year of King John. Those for the 10th, 11th, and 12th years of his reign are unfortunately missing, which is all the more to be regretted by the student of Kentish Ecclesiastical History, as during the whole of that time the Temporalities of the See of Canterbury were in the King's hands, and he disposed of all preferments belonging to the Archbishop which happened to fall vacant. The Rolls for the 23rd and 24th years of King Henry III. are also missing. With these exceptions the series is complete throughout. The Patent Rolls for King John's reign were printed in verbal facsimile, and with admirable Indexes of Persons and Places, in the year 1835, under the direction of the Public Record Commissioners. Those for the reign of King Henry III. have not yet been so treated. The Presentations given below are valuable, as being earlier in date than any Institutions entered in the Registers of the Archbishops in Lambeth Palace Library, which commence with the accession of Archbishop Peckham in the year 1279.

But a number of volumes by different writers are never likely to be quite uniform in character, even though planned on the same lines; and it seems desirable to explain shortly the aim we have had in view in writing our own little book. In our accounts of places of interest we have subordinated the historical to the descriptive element; and whilst we have related pretty fully in the Introduction the events of national importance which have taken place within the county, we have not devoted much space to family histories. We have made it our chief purpose to help our readers to see for themselves what is best worth seeing. If, in carrying out our design, we appear to have treated inadequately many interesting country seats, our excuse must be that such are naturally not very accessible to the ordinary tourist, whose needs we have sought to supply. And if churches and church architecture seem to receive undue attention, it may be page 2 / 318 pleaded that Somerset is particularly rich in ecclesiastical buildings, and affords excellent opportunities for the pursuit of a fascinating study.
