2007 Annual Report
2007 Annual Report As a celebration of the creative spirit that drives everything we do at DreamWorks Animation, we held an artwork contest in 2007 in which we invited all employees to submit a design to be featured in the Annual Report. Every submission celebrated the unique and fulfilling process of working on an animated film at the Company. Rhion Magee, Consumer Products, created the winning submission. Dear Fellow Shareholders, I am pleased to report that 2007 was our most successful year since we took DreamWorks Animation public in 2004, thanks in large part to the blockbuster success of Shrek the Third and the Shrek franchise as a whole. In addition to boasting the best domestic opening in the history of animated film, Shrek the Third became the second highest grossing film of 2007 in the U.S. and the fourth best performing animated movie of all time. Even in a challenging home video market, Shrek the Third has risen above the competition and performed well. In 2007, we advanced our mission to successfully expand the Shrek brand with Shrek the Halls, our first made-for-television special. Over 21 million people throughout the U.S. watched the program this past holiday season on ABC. Additionally, Shrek made his first appearance at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as the official 2007 Ambassador for the event. In December, we will take our brand expansion one step further by bringing Shrek the Musical to the Broadway Theatre in New York City. We are very excited about this tremendous opportunity to further extend one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood history. -
Masculinity in Children's Film
Masculinity in Children’s Film The Academy Award Winners Author: Natalie Kauklija Supervisor: Mariah Larsson Examiner: Tommy Gustafsson Spring 2018 Film Studies Bachelor Thesis Course Code 2FV30E Abstract This study analyzes the evolution of how the male gender is portrayed in five Academy Award winning animated films, starting in the year 2002 when the category was created. Because there have been seventeen award winning films in the animated film category, and there is a limitation regarding the scope for this paper, the winner from every fourth year have been analyzed; resulting in five films. These films are: Shrek (2001), Wallace and Gromit (2005), Up (2009), Frozen (2013) and Coco (2017). The films selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Animated Feature film category tend to be both critically and financially successful, and watched by children, young adults, and adults worldwide. How male heroes are portrayed are generally believed to affect not only young boys who are forming their identities (especially ages 6-14), but also views on gender behavioral expectations in girls. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations , on the part of the author or publisher. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification eg. Wallace is the human of the pair and mostly the leader. Steve's Film Festival Reviews for 2005
Steve’s Film Festival Reviews for 2005 By Steve Munro Ratings * I stayed to the bitter end (but probably shouldn’t have) ** Maybe worth seeing once *** Recommended **** First rate ***** Best of the festival The reviews are arranged in the order of viewing. Festival Main Title From the poster, a pair of hands making a square frame, I had expected something rather boring, but this year’s title was a joy to watch 33 times over. A series of images, all made from hands, represents each of the aspects of the Film Festival including its library, the Sprockets Children’s festival and the out-of-town film circuit. One night, as I waved to a friend who was looking for me in the house as this sequence ran, I realized that these are also the hands that shoot up in front of a screen to make pictures. A lovely 30th anniversary piece. Universal Studios’ salute to the volunteers is partly recycled from years past, and been updated with the new NBC/Universal logo. All the same, it drew applause at each viewing right up to the end, with especially lusty cheers on the last day. Every screening began with an exhortation to turn off cell phones and not to photograph the film. The less said about this trailer, sponsored by Motorola, the better. It got very tiring by the third viewing. (Several of my screenings had security folk scanning the audience for video pirates, but nobody was hauled out of any theatre and fed to the dogs. A shame as this would have been at least as entertaining as the onscreen action for a few flicks.) Visa Trailers Times are getting tough. -
Guests We Are Pleased to Announce That the Following Guests Have Confirmed That They Can Attend (Subject to Work Commitments)
Hello and welcome to the second progress report for the festival. We have a great guest line-up and the programme is being finalised as we speak. Can’t say too much at this stage, but it’s going to be another corker. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, our previously announced guest, George Hilton, will be unable to attend. Guests We are pleased to announce that the following guests have confirmed that they can attend (subject to work commitments). Peter Wyngarde Lone Flemming Camille Keaton Jenny Hanley Carlotta Morelli Ruggero Deodato Please Note: The hotel is releasing all rooms held, so please, if you have not done so already, book your room to avoid disappointment. Rooms are still available at the Ibis, just around the corner but these are expected to be booked up soon. 1 Welcome to the Festival : Once again the Festival approaches and as always it is great looking forward to meeting old friends again and talking films. The main topic of conversation so far this year seems to be the imminent arrival of some more classic Hammer films on Blu Ray, at long last. Like so many of you, I am very much looking forward to these and it is fortuitous that this year Jenny Hanley is making a return visit to our festival, just as her Hammer magnum opus with Christopher Lee and Dennis Waterman, Scars of Dracula is on the list of new blu rays being released. I am having to face the inevitable question of how much longer I can go on, but that is not your problem. -
Wallace & Gromit
WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT Programme Notes If Nick Park and co. at Aardman gradually established themselves as a sort of millennial plasticine Ealing, then surely ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ is their diversion into Hammer horror territory. Aardman’s plunge into the daunting world of feature-length production had begun with ‘Chicken Run’ (2000), which set something of a precedent with its own co-opting of a broad, recognisable genre, on this occasion the wartime prison break drama, and the much-loved Wallace & Gromit followed suit with a good old-fashioned monster spooker. Ok, it tones down its terrors in favour of good old English standbys like garden fêtes, marrow-growing contests, and aerial dogfights, yet this in itself all shows a keen awareness of the frequently clichéd vision of Britain depicted in our genre fare, with emphasis often placed on class-system clashes (compare the respective foxhunter sequences in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, ‘The Tomb of Ligeia’, ‘The Plague of the Zombies’ and ‘The Final Conflict’, for example – our ‘proper’ horror films straying every bit as far from their fear focus and using traditional imagery to offer comment on wider issues). We probably have as many fictional ‘national treasures’ as we do real ones – for every Florence Nightingale or Mo Farah, say, there’s a ‘James Bond’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’. An instant hit as soon as ‘A Grand Day Out’ took to the screens in 1989, both Wallace and Gromit leapt on to everyone’s list of praiseworthy favourites, consolidating their success with ‘The Wrong Trousers’ (1993), perhaps their defining half-hour, and ‘A Close Shave’ (1995). -

Oxford DNB: January 2021
Oxford DNB: January 2021 Welcome to the seventieth update of the Oxford DNB, which adds biographies of 241 individuals who died in the year 2017: 224 with their own entries and seventeen added to existing entries as 'co-subjects'. Of these new inclusions, the earliest born is the journalist Clare Hollingworth (1911-2017) and the latest born is the artist and photographer Khadija Saye (1992- 2017). Hollingworth is one of five centenarians included in this update, and Saye one of thirty-four new subjects born after the Second World War. The vast majority (169, or over 70%) were born in the 1920s and 1930s. Sixty-three of the new subjects who died in 2017 (or just over 26% of the cohort) are women. Twenty of the new subjects were themselves contributors to the dictionary. Forty-five of the new articles include portrait images. From January 2021, the Oxford DNB offers biographies of 64,071 men and women who have shaped the British past, contained in 61,745 articles. 11,870 biographies include a portrait image of the subject—researched in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London. As ever, we have a free selection of these new entries, together with a full list of the new biographies. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to the Oxford DNB, which means you can access the complete dictionary for free via your local library. Libraries offer 'remote access' that enables you to log in at any time at home (or anywhere you have internet access). Elsewhere the Oxford DNB is available online in schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions worldwide.
