We rented a car and made a big loop from Frankfurt -Koblenz / Rhine - Black forest / Castles – Munich – Berlin- Frankfurt. • After college she took a job with Honeywell, moved to Germany, got married, and eventually had our first grandchild. • When we visit we always try to visit some new vineyards. • I was surprised how many good red wines were available. So with the help of friends and family we procured and carried this collection over. German Wine - fun facts • 90% of German reds are consumed in Germany. • Very few wine retailers in America have any German red wines. • Most of the largest red producers are still too small to export to USA. • You can pay $$$ for a fine French red or drink German reds for the entire year. • As vineyard owners die they split the vineyards between siblings. Some vineyards get down to 3 rows. Siblings take turns picking the center row year to year. • High quality German Riesling does not come in a blue bottle! On top, sweet wines are produced based on the naturally occuring Botrytis Cinerea. This region produces by far the biggest amount of red wine in Austria. This is the reason why it is also unofficially called the red wine quarter of the country. The winery Hillinger is in the north of Burgenland, between the Leithaberg and the lake Neusiedl. This subregion is known for it’s unique whites and sweets. This can be attributed to the plentiful sunshine and the cooler nights the region experiences which averages of more than 2000 hours per year Soil and Climate: The primary rock is slate and lime. The perfect vineyards for our Pinot’s are limestone and brown soil and for Blaufränkisch on lime. Hot, dry summers and cold winters express fruitiness and retain acidity in the wines combined with the temperature-regulating influence of the lake Neusiedl, guarantees long vegetation periods for full ripeness of grapes. High humidity and autumn fog and drying sun during the day helps to develop botrytis cinerea, which forms the basis for our top quality sweet wines, such as TBA Small Hill Sweet and TBA Hill 3. Heinrich, `Red` Burgenland Zweigelt/Blaufränkisch/St. Laurent 2013 Neusiedlersee, Burgenland, Austria PRODUCER Gernot Heinrich has 100 hectares of vines in Gols, Burgenland, which is Austria's easternmost province, lying only a few kilometres from the Hungarian border. After graduating in viticulture from Klosterneuberg, Gernot's vinous travels in Bordeaux, Spain, California and Italy convinced him that his best approach in this continental climate was to use indigenous grapes such as Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt to make the highest quality, most characteristic wines he could. VINEYARDS The fruit for this wine is sourced from both sides of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. On the west side of the lake, the vines are found on the limestone and slate slopes of the Leithagebirge. On the east side of the lake, grapes come from the gravelly Parndorf Plateau and the humus-rich Heideboden. St Laurent is grown on the higher slopes and Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt on the heavier soils lower down. The oldest vines are 30 years old. Gernot has been farming his vineyards according to biodynamic principles since 2006 and achieved certification in 2009. VINTAGE Burgenland had beautiful weather throughout 2013, with heat waves and periods of rainfall. The grapes took their time to ripen and those winemakers who were brave enough to wait patiently were rewarded with beautifully ripe ones. Blaufränkisch was the only grape variety in Burgenland to be affected by coulure. After the two highly ripe vintages of 2011 and 2012, which delivered monumental red and white wines, the 2013 vintage almost perfectly represents the "Austrian ideal" of freshness, raciness and animated drinkability. -

The base wine was aged in large used barrels. After the second fermentation, the sparkling wine ages for 24 months on the yeast. The goal is the underline the varietal character. Tasting Notes: Dark red color, fruity taste of cherries, plums and herbs. Red sparkling wine – unconventional and rare. Very pleasant and seductive in its dry finish. A niche product. Zweigelt is the most important red grape in the area, Professor Zweigelt lived in Langenlois! Sekt: In 1989 Karl Steininger started with the traditional bottle fermentation for his Sekt. He created an Austrian sparkling wine philosophy by using only typical Kamptal varieties. In the classic line the secret of success is based on two factors: on the one hand the high quality of the base wines, which present themselves clear, fruity and aromatic and on the other hand the gentle second fermentation in the bottle. Both factors together match the character of each variety and the flavor profile of the base wine. Category ”Reserve“: The grapes for the sparkling wines of the category ”Reserve“ must be harvested and pressed in a single Austrian federal state. They also have to be harvested by hand. Further the sparkling wine must be produced according to the traditional method of bottle fermentation. -

During flowering, the weather was very hot. At the end of August the weather changed completely; temperatures dropped and there was a lot of rainfall during harvest. At Heinrich a lot of time was spent in the vineyard to accurately select the grapes, and thus 2014 has given wines with much finesse and freshness. VINIFICATION The grapes were hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard at the beginning of September. All movement of the juice was carried out by gravity.
