Now, the Reds are the in-form side in England, Brendan Rodgers is being praised for his tactical acumen, and the team is one win away from a return to the Champions League qualifica- tion places. To make it even sweeter for Liverpool, that win could come on Sunday against its fiercest rival. Liverpool hosts Manchester United at Anfield in what is traditionally seen as the biggest game in English football - and there is much more than simply local bragging rights at stake. Liverpool can supplant United in fourth place with a victory that would maintain its unbeaten run in the league since the teams last met, at Old Trafford on Dec. 14. On that occasion, United won 3-0 and Liverpool was on the slide - a far cry from the one that almost won the Premier League last season. It has made up a 10-point deficit to the top four since then - a “monumental” effort, according to Rodgers. “We haven’t done anything yet,” Rodgers said, “but from where we were at the start of the season, the intent that they have shown and the work they have had to put in to claw that back and to give ourselves a fighting chance, (it) is great.” United comes into the match on the back of probably its most impressive performance of the season, a 3-0 win over Tottenham. It was the kind of upbeat, dynamic display that man- ager Louis van Gaal had been waiting for. The question, with nine matches remaining, is: can United keep it up? For a while, it seemed England’s two most successful sides were fighting for one of the two final Champions League places, behind the top two of Chelsea and Manchester City. However, second-place City is stumbling and is only a point SAO PAULO: Luis Fabiano of Brazil’s Sao Paulo FC winds up to kick the ball during a Copa Libertadores soccer match clear of third-place Arsenal, two ahead of United and four ahead of fifth-place Liverpool. • Offensive and Defensive Plus–Minus Player Ratings for Soccer
applied sciences Article Offensive and Defensive Plus–Minus Player Ratings for Soccer Lars Magnus Hvattum Faculty of Logistics, Molde University College, 6410 Molde, Norway; [email protected] Received: 15 September 2020; Accepted: 16 October 2020; Published: 20 October 2020 Abstract: Rating systems play an important part in professional sports, for example, as a source of entertainment for fans, by influencing decisions regarding tournament seedings, by acting as qualification criteria, or as decision support for bookmakers and gamblers. Creating good ratings at a team level is challenging, but even more so is the task of creating ratings for individual players of a team. This paper considers a plus–minus rating for individual players in soccer, where a mathematical model is used to distribute credit for the performance of a team as a whole onto the individual players appearing for the team. The main aim of the work is to examine whether the individual ratings obtained can be split into offensive and defensive contributions, thereby addressing the lack of defensive metrics for soccer players. As a result, insights are gained into how elements such as the effect of player age, the effect of player dismissals, and the home field advantage can be broken down into offensive and defensive consequences. Keywords: association football; linear regression; regularization; ranking 1. Introduction Soccer has become a large global business, and significant amounts of capital are at stake when the competitions at the highest level are played. While soccer is a team sport, the attention of media and fans is often directed towards individual players. An understanding of the game therefore also involves an ability to dissect the contributions of individual players to the team as a whole.
