It is located to the northeast of the Lake Onego, surrounding the rather lar- ge Lake Vodlozero – one of the four largest water reservoirs in southern Karelia (Northwest Russia). The watershed between the two lakes forms a natural eastern border of the region. From the south and north its borders were defined by the settlement areas of the Russians, who identified themselves as “Vodlozery”, i.e. inhabitants of Vodlozerie and not any other historical or cultural province.1 Interestingly, the region’s remoteness from cultural and economic centers had more influence on its development in modern times than during Middle Ages. A sys- tem of Vodlozerie settlements within the borders of “boyarshchina” – feudal lands of Novgorod people – existed here and was well documented in the cadastral sources as early as in the middle of the 16th century, and furthermore it was preserved almost unchanged up until the 20th century. Since the 18th century the region has become more and more isolated. The reason for this isolation is believed to be the shift of the trade routes towards the new capital of Saint Petersburg as well as the almost complete absence of roads.2 Indeed, there were never built any asphalt roads leading to the Vodlozero region. The article is devoted to the socio-economic adaptation of single-industry towns’ population on the example of single-industry settlements in the North-West of Russia. The work’s theoretical and meth- odological framework is the approaches of scientists who study the grassroots practices of survival of small towns and villages (seasonal work, commuting, a distributed way of life, the informal economy). The empir- ical base of the study are statistical data collected from the databases of EMISS, SPARK Interfax, the Foun- dation for the Development of Single-Industry Towns, websites of administrations of single-industry set- tlements in the Northwestern Federal District, as well as data from field studies collected by the method of semi-formalized interviews with representatives of administrations and deputies of city and regional coun- cils, with ordinary residents of single-industry towns in Republic of Karelia, Leningrad and Vologda oblasts. -

It contains most of the historical Karelia land inhabited with autochthonous Karels and more recently migrated Russians. Although tuberculosis (TB) incidence in Karelia is decreasing, it remains high (45.8/100 000 in 2014) with the rate of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among newly diagnosed TB patients reaching 46.5 %. The study aimed to genetically characterize Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates obtained at different time points from TB patients from Karelia to gain insight into the phylogeographic specificity of the circulating genotypes and to assess trends in evolution of drug resistant subpopulations. Methods: The sample included 150 M. tuberculosis isolates: 78 isolated in 2013–2014 (“new” collection) and 72 isolated in 2006 (“old” collection). Drug susceptibility testing was done by the method of absolute concentrations. DNA was subjected to spoligotyping and analysis of genotype-specific markers of the Latin-American-Mediterranean (LAM) family and its sublineages and Beijing B0/W148-cluster. Results: The largest spoligotypes were SIT1 (Beijing family, n = 42) and SIT40 (T family, n = 5). Beijing family was the largest (n = 43) followed by T (n =11),Ural(n =10)andLAM(n = 8). -

Pilot study of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves within the Barents Region and the possibilities for collaboration Laplandskiy BR Vindelälven-Juhttátahkka BR Metsola BR Vodlozerskiy BR North Karelian BR Kenozerskiy BR January 2021 Anders Esselin, Man & Nature AB Johanna MacTaggart, the Swedish Man and Biosphere Programme SWEDISH FOREST AGENCY Foreword Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) is a forum for intergovernmental cooperation on issues concerning the Barents region. The objective of Barents cooperation is to strengthen peace, stability and sustainable development by improving opportunities for cooperation across the region’s borders. The chairmanship rotates every second year between Norway, Finland, Russia and Sweden. The aim of the Working Group on Barents Forest Sector (WGBFS) is to promote sustainable management and utilization of forest resources and ecosystem services in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests as well as the Paris Climate Agreement. The forest sector is an important part of the economic, social and environmental development in the Barents region and the forest plays a central role in the transition to a bio-based circular society. Priorities for the Norwegian chairmanship of the Working Group on Barents Forest Sector are to focus on the forest-based bioeconomy and the transition to a low-carbon society. Norway has given priority to knowledge creation by involving research organizations present in the region and strive to strengthen regional cooperation in the Barents region. Searching for new platforms for regional cooperation is a part of this effort. The pilot study was initiated in order to analyze the possibilities to use the Barents Cooperation as a potential platform to establish collaboration between Biosphere Reserve areas within the Barents region. -
Characteristics of the Bat (Chiroptera) Population in Protected Areas in the Northern and Middle Taiga Subzones of European Russia

The overall bat (Chiroptera) fauna of Protected Areas in the forest zone of European Russia has not yet been assessed, although papers on some Protected Areas are being published quite regularly. Along its north-to-south gradient, this extensive area spans a great variety of habitats suitable for bat populations with vastly diverse compositions. In our review of bat species, we focused on eight Protected Areas in the northern and middle taiga, as well as on a comparative summary of the faunal data for the forest zone of European Russia in general. Surveys using a bat detector and by mist-netting resulted in identification of the species composition, relative abundance, relative density and spatial distribution of bats in Protected Areas. The following nine bat species were recorded: Myotis nattereri, M. mystacinus, M. brandtii, M. daubentonii, M. dasycneme, Plecotus auritus, Nyctalus noctula, Eptesicus nilssonii, Vespertilio murinus. We regularly recorded ultrasonic signals from Plecotus auritus, Nyctalus noctula and Vespertilio murinus up to 66° N, which is much farther north that the species ranges indicated on IUCN maps. This result came as a surprise, considering there had been no specialised censuses in the Republic of Karelia or the Arkhangelsk region for decades. -
