Date of review: Thursday 13th December, 2007 Director: Jason Reitman Duration: 91 minutes Classification: M We rate it: 4 and a half stars. Jason Reitman, son of ultra-mainstream (and very successful) Hollywood director Ivan Reitman (he of Ghostbusters, Stripes and Kindergarten Cop fame) may just be able to move out from under his father’s significant shadow with this wonderful film. Jason Reitman’s breakthrough film as a director was 2005’s Thank You for Smoking, a cleverly written and very well performed black comedy that was so well pulled-off that one felt in the presence of promising new talent. It seems that feeling was correct, because with Juno, a very different film to its predecessor, Reitman has made an utterly assured and charming comedy/drama, and has drawn tremendously convincing and engaging performances from the entire cast. The talented young actress Ellen Page (who was so memorable in the confronting thriller Hard Candy) plays the titular character, an intelligent, articulate, out-of-left- field high-school student who, as our story opens, finds herself pregnant to her close friend and would-be boyfriend, Bleeker. Being smart, strong and self-possessed, Juno confronts her situation level-headedly, and decides, on reflection, that she will go through with the pregnancy and offer her child for adoption to a couple who are unable to conceive. With the support of her family - stepmother Bren (the wonderful Alison Janney) and father Mac (the ever-humourous J.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

AMERICA AND THE MOVIES WHAT THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES FOR BEST PICTURE TELL US ABOUT OURSELVES I am glad to be here, and honored. For twenty-two years, I was the Executive Director of the Center for Christian Study in Charlottesville, VA, adjacent to the University of Virginia, and now I am in the same position with the fledgling Consortium of Christian Study Centers, a nation-wide group of Study Centers with the mission of working to present a Christian voice at the secular universities of our land. There are some thirty to thirty-five such Study Centers in all different shapes and sizes. Not surprisingly, I suppose, I believe the work they are doing is some of the most important work being done at universities in America today, and that makes me glad and filled with anticipation to be here with Missy and the rest of you at the beginning of another study center. I have had the privilege of being part of this from the beginning though also from afar, and it is nice finally to see what is happening here. I look forward to seeing what the Lord does in the coming years. Thank you for inviting me to address you. Now to the task at hand. This is the tenth year in a row I have, in one form or another, looked at the Academy Award nominees for best picture and opined on what they tell us about life in American society. However, this is the first of those ten years in which I have lectured on this topic before the nominees were even announced.

As a result, these films function as alternative pedagogical sites for analysis and critique, facilitating critical thinking about information beyond the library and the classroom, and leading students to a deeper understanding of the fundamental need for information literacy. A conceptual basis for the consideration of film in politically engaged information literacy instruction is provided, supported by a discussion of three relevant films: Jason Reitman’s Thank You for Smoking (2006), Joel and Ethan Coen’s Burn after Reading (2008), and Oliver Stone’s W.

Joining the World of Journals Welcome to the nation’s first and, to our knowledge, only undergraduate research journal in communi- cations. We discovered this fact while perusing the Web site of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which lists and links to the 60 or so undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/ugjournal. html). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and some are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Furman University Electronic Journal in Undergraduate Mathematics). The Elon Journal is the first to focus on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communi- cations. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The first issue was published in Spring 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles and other materials in the journal may be freely downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission as long as the author and source are properly cited. Student authors retain copyright own- ership of their works. Celebrating Student Research This journal reflects what we enjoy seeing in our students -- intellectual maturing.

  • The Role of the Media in Promoting and Reducing Tobacco
10 Role of Entertainment Media in Promoting or Discouraging Tobacco Use Popular entertainment media are a powerful force in the lives of Americans. In particular, young Americans have been shown to spend an average of more than five hours per day exposed to a variety of media channels. This chapter examines the role of entertainment media in encouraging or discouraging tobacco use, including aspects such as n Channels of media exposure, particularly for children n Studies performed on tobacco use in the movie industry, ranging from trends in tobacco prevalence by movie type to issues such as how tobacco use is depicted, not portraying the health consequences of smoking, and brand-specific exposure n Studies examining the influence of smoking in the movies on the social attitudes and behaviors surrounding smoking n A summary of research on the portrayal of tobacco use in other media channels, such as television, music, magazines, and the Internet n Current and future strategies for reducing public exposure to tobacco use in entertainment media, including policy interventions, efforts at industry self-regulation, and advocacy efforts aimed at both the public and the entertainment industry The total weight of evidence from cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental studies indicates a causal relationship between exposure to movie smoking depictions and youth smoking initiation. Further research to better understand this relationship and to evaluate strategies to reduce youth exposure to tobacco portrayals in entertainment media is warranted. 357 1 0 .
