Date of review: Thursday 13th December, 2007 Director: Jason Reitman Duration: 91 minutes Classification: M We rate it: 4 and a half stars. Jason Reitman, son of ultra-mainstream (and very successful) Hollywood director Ivan Reitman (he of Ghostbusters, Stripes and Kindergarten Cop fame) may just be able to move out from under his father’s significant shadow with this wonderful film. Jason Reitman’s breakthrough film as a director was 2005’s Thank You for Smoking, a cleverly written and very well performed black comedy that was so well pulled-off that one felt in the presence of promising new talent. It seems that feeling was correct, because with Juno, a very different film to its predecessor, Reitman has made an utterly assured and charming comedy/drama, and has drawn tremendously convincing and engaging performances from the entire cast. The talented young actress Ellen Page (who was so memorable in the confronting thriller Hard Candy) plays the titular character, an intelligent, articulate, out-of-left- field high-school student who, as our story opens, finds herself pregnant to her close friend and would-be boyfriend, Bleeker. Being smart, strong and self-possessed, Juno confronts her situation level-headedly, and decides, on reflection, that she will go through with the pregnancy and offer her child for adoption to a couple who are unable to conceive. Wesleyan ♦ University Political Voices: Political Engagement Through Text Sound Poetry By Celeste Hutchins Faculty Advisor: Ron Kuivila A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. Middletown, Connecticut May 2005 Text Sound Poetry I created several pieces using manipulated speech recordings, starting in the fall of 2003. After completing some of these pieces, I became aware of Text Sound Poetry as a well-defined genre involving similar passages between language and sound. To find out more about this genre, I listened to Other Mind’s re-release of 10 + 2: 12 American Text Sound Pieces, the re-released OU archives and Terre Thaemlitz’s album Interstices. Text Sound seems to be especially well suited to political expression. Often, a political work suffers a tension between the political/text content and the musical content. Either the political message or the music often must be sacrificed. However, in Text Sound, the text content is the musical content. Composers like Sten Hanson, Steve Reich and Terre Thaemlitz are able to create pieces where complaints about the Vietnam War, police brutality, and gender discrimination form the substance of the piece. To engage the piece is to engage the political content. Reich’s pieces are less obvious than Hanson and Thaemlitz. The loop process he uses in “Its Gonna Rain” is auditorially interesting, but the meaning of the piece is not immediately clear to a modern listener. Many discussions of his pieces eliminate the political content and focus on the process. Before I did research on this piece I was disturbed by the implications of a white composer taking the words of an African American and obscuring them until the content was lost to the process. -

INTRODUCTION THE PULITZER PRIZES FOR INTERNATIONAL REPORTING IN THE THIRD PHASE OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT, 1963-1977 Heinz-Dietrich Fischer The rivalry between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. having shifted, in part, to predomi- nance in the fields of space-travel and satellites in the upcoming space age, thus opening a new dimension in the Cold War,1 there were still existing other controversial issues in policy and journalism. "While the colorful space competition held the forefront of public atten- tion," Hohenberg remarks, "the trained diplomatic correspondents of the major newspa- pers and wire services in the West carried on almost alone the difficult and unpopular East- West negotiations to achieve atomic control and regulation and reduction of armaments. The public seemed to want to ignore the hard fact that rockets capable of boosting people into orbit for prolonged periods could also deliver atomic warheads to any part of the earth. It continued, therefore, to be the task of the responsible press to assign competent and highly trained correspondents to this forbidding subject. They did not have the glamor of TV or the excitement of a space shot to focus public attention on their work. Theirs was the responsibility of obliging editors to publish material that was complicated and not at all easy for an indifferent public to grasp. It had to be done by abandoning the familiar cliches of journalism in favor of the care and the art of the superior historian .. On such an assignment, no correspondent was a 'foreign' correspondent. The term was outdated. -

Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

Since the war was waged in the TV era, the filmmakers rely less exclusively on the trademark “Ken Burns effect” pans over still images. Since Vietnam was the “living-room war,” played out on the nightly news, this documentary doesn’t show us the fighting with new eyes, the way “The War” did with its unearthed archival World War II footage. -

About Middlesex Community College mxcc.edu/catalog/about/ Founded in 1966 as a branch campus of Manchester Community College, Middlesex Community College became an independent member of the Community College System in 1968. At the outset, the college operated principally in space rented from Middletown Public Schools and loaned by Connecticut Valley Hospital.
