    Lise Jaillant Myth Maker: Malcolm Bradbury and the Creation of Creative Writing at UEA1 ABSTRACT When did creative writing courses really appear in the UK? The usual story is that the first creative writing programme was launched in 1970 at the University of East Anglia, under the leadership of Malcolm Bradbury. Ian McEwan is often presented as the first student in creative writing, a role he has always rejected – insisting that he studied for an MA in literature with the option to submit creative work for the final dissertation. As Kathryn Holeywell has shown, creative writing was already offered for assessment at UEA in the 1960s. This article tells a more complete history of creative writing in Britain, a history that takes into account the experimentations of the 1960s and the rise of literary prizes in the 1980s – without ignoring Bradbury’s important role. KEYWORDS: Creative writing in literature courses; literary prizes; celebrity; writing communities The story is familiar and goes something like this: in 1970, the young Ian McEwan saw an announcement for a new postgraduate course in creative writing at the University of East Anglia. He gave a call to Professor Malcolm Bradbury, sent a writing sample, and became the first (and only) student of the first MA in creative writing in the UK. McEwan, of course, went on to become one of the most successful British writers of literary fiction. And Bradbury was knighted in 2000, shortly before his death, for his services to literature. This is a good story, which emphasises the extraordinary luck of both McEwan and Bradbury.

Deposit Guide Contact: email Financial performance studies of University Spin-Off Companies (USOs) in the West Midlands Peter David Jelfs Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD Birkbeck, University of London 1 Abstract Doubts remain over the true success of USOs in the UK, particularly those created outside the elite research universities. This thesis examines the financial performance of USOs generated from universities with a range of research intensities from a single region, the West Midlands, and considers whether observations can be rationalised using the frameworks of signalling and agency theories. While some results are in line with the expectations of the frameworks, others are not and demonstrate the complexity in attempting to explain the data, and the need to consider wider data sets and more explanatory factors. Universities with a strong research pedigree generated the most USOs in line with the theoretical frameworks, with the Russell Group universities dominant in the region. The data relating to survival of USOs is more difficult to rationalise and leads to a tentative conclusion that this is not a useful performance metric.

Abstract This thesis examines the links developing between the universities and their regions in the globalising knowledge economy as observed in the UK. It examines institutional responses to two realms of policies, namely, higher education policy and regional development policy. The diversifying missions of universities, especially, the ‘third stream activities’ promoted by the UK government since the late 1990s, are set against the dynamics of the multi-level territorial governance structure emerging within Europe. The key question examined is: can the new institutional strategies of universities in order to compete in a globalising market be reconciled with the increased emphasis upon their regional engagement in various policy agendas? The tensions created here are explored through an examination of policy discourses, and by means of empirical evidence concerning different institutional networks in different spatial contexts, in particular, in the West Midlands Region and at the University of Birmingham.

At that time he had been a Student and Tutor in Politics at Christ Church, Oxford, since 1946. He had published admired revisionist studies of the soldier Lord Haig (1952) and the politician Bonar Law (1955), but unquestionably it was the brilliant success of his biography of Disraeli in 1966 that stimulated support for his election. Robert Norman William Blake was born in the Manor House, Brundall, on the Yare, Norfolk, a little outside Norwich, on 23 December 1916. His father, William Joseph Blake (1877–1964), born and brought up in Cornwall, was senior history master at the King Edward VI Grammar School in Norwich. His mother, Norah Lindley, née Daynes (1886–1957), of a Brundall family, was the daughter of a prominent Norwich solicitor. Blake’s second given name, Norman, was shared with a maternal uncle, His Honour John Norman Daynes, QC (1884–1966), who was a Judge of County Courts, 1945–57. For all his life, Blake identified himself fervently with his native county; but it was through his maternal line that his Norfolk roots originally ran deep. It was from his uncle Norman that in 1966 he inherited Riverview, a fine and ample Victorian house in Brundall with terraced gardens overlooking the Yare. Riverview remained his beloved retreat for the rest of his life. The eldest of three children (there was a brother who died young, and a sister, Jill), Robert attended a dame school in Brundall before going on to the King Edward VI School in Norwich where his father taught him history.
