This high, rugged, and remote region, where bold plateaus and multi-hued cliffs run for distances that defy human perspective, was the last place in the continental United States to be mapped. Even today, this unspoiled natural area remains a frontier, a quality that greatly enhances the monument's value for scientific study. The monument has a long and dignified human history: it is a place where one can see how nature shapes human endeavors in the American West, where distance and aridity have been pitted against our dreams and courage. The monument presents exemplary opportunities for geologists, paleontologists, archeologists, historians, and biologists. The monument is a geologic treasure of clearly exposed stratigraphy and structures. The sedimentary rock layers are relatively undeformed and unobscured by vegetation, offering a clear view to understanding the proc- esses of the earth's formation. A wide variety of formations, some in brilliant colors, have been exposed by millennia of erosion. The monument contains significant portions of a vast geologic stairway, named the Grand Staircase by pioneering geologist Clarence Dutton, which rises 5,500 feet to the rim of Bryce Canyon in an unbroken sequence of great cliffs and plateaus. The monument includes the rugged canyon country of the upper Paria Canyon system, major components of the White and Vermilion Cliffs and associated benches, and the Kaiparowits Plateau. -

TERRESTRIAL VERTEBRATE FAUNA OF THE KAIPAROWITS BASIN N. Diiane Atwood', Clyde L. Pritchctt', Richard D. Porter', and Benjamin W. Wood' .\bstr^ct.- This report inehides data collected during an investigation by Brighani Young University personnel to 1976, as well as a literature from 1971 review. The fauna of the Kaiparowits Basin is represented by 7 species of salamander, toads, mnphihians (1 5 and 1 tree frog), 29 species of reptiles (1 turtle, 16 lizards, and 12 snakes), 183 species of birds (plus 2 hypothetical), and 74 species of mammals. Geographic distribution of the various species within the basin are discussed. Birds are categorized according to their population and seasonal status. -

TINDALL1 1 Department of Physical Sciences, Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA 19530; 2 Department of Geology, Carleton College, Northfield, MN, 55057; 3 Central Connecticut State University, Department of Physics and Earth Sciences, New Britain, Connecticut 06050, USA Abstract—Tridactyl tracks were identified in the fluvial strata of the Upper Cretaceous Wahweap Formation in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, southern Utah, U.S.A. An isolated track and a trackway are located within the upper member at the Cockscomb, and an isolated track is in the capping sandstone member at Wesses Canyon. The upper member tracks are tridactyl pes imprints consisting of a longer, blunt digit III and shorter, blunt digits II-IV. This trace corresponds well to an ornithropod dinosaur as the trackmaker. The capping sandstone member track is a tridactyl pes with an elongate digit III and shorter digits II-IV. Claw impressions are present on the terminus of digits II and III. This trace is consistent with the pes impression of a one meter tall theropod. The tracks further highlight the diversity of dinosaurs in the capping sandstone of the Wahweap Formation. INTRODUCTION During the Late Cretaceous, North America, in particular the west- ern United States, was the site of a radiation of new dinosaurian genera. -

This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. HOWARD HUTCHISON Museum of Paleontology, 1101 Valley Life Sciences Building, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 [email protected] and [email protected] We report new data on the type locality of the hadrosaurid ornithischian Adelolophus hutchisoni Gates et al., 2014 from the Campanian-aged Wahweap Formation of southern Utah, and the remainder of the vertebrate assemblage from the site. The type locality (UCMP V98173) is a previously-reported U.S. Geological Survey locality (USGS D815) and is stratigraphically low in the upper member of the Wahweap Formation. Additional taxa from the same site include acipenseriforms (sturgeon), amiiforms (bowfin), and lepisosteiforms (gar fish), baenid and trionychid turtles, and both theropod and ornithischian dinosaurs. Mines and Roads OF BOOMAND BUST Gold. Nothing made the hearts of many nineteenth-century Americans beat faster than the possibility of finding it and becoming independently wealthy overnight. Stories of feverish activity abound from the placer claims of California to the Comstock Lode in Nevada, and from Cripple Creek and Leadville in Colorado to the Black Hills of South Dakota. The reward for most of the large num- ber of people who flooded to these areas were claims that did not pan out, debts that remained for years, and an experience that was better left forgotten. When the boom went bust there was little reason to remain, and so the miners packed their essentials and left for the next strike, where conditions would undoubtedly be better. San Juan County has seen its own rushes-first for silver and gold, then oil, and finally uranium-each with its own get-rich-quick pattern, ebb and flow of men and machines, and frenzied quest for wealth. Strikes have occurred all around the county, in the Carrizo, Henry, Sleeping Ute, and La Sal mountains. Even before the area became a county, there were miners on the prowl, trying to find that Eldorado that was going to make them rich. Earliest mining attempts involved individuals or small groups of prospectors searching in a rugged country where few had previously ventured. Ernest Mitchell and James Merrick invited George Hobbs of the 1879 Mormon exploring party to join them in search of a secret Navajo silver mine whose ore reportedly assayed at ninety per- cent.
