* Cum Laude X Degree awarded previously without ceremony ** Magna Cum Laude XX Anticipating August 1995 completion *** Summa Cum Laude ACADEMIC HONORS

Saint Xavier University is proud to recognize those undergraduate students who have excelled academically. The University does not award honors to graduate students since they must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average. Honors for students who received their degree without ceremony in August 1994 and January 1995 are calculated on a minimum of 60 graded credit hours earned at Saint Xavier University with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Honors for students receiving their degrees in May and those participating in the ceremony who anticipate completing their degree requirements in August 1995 are based on a minimum of 45 graded credit hours earned at Saint Xavier University with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Cum Laude (with honors) requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Magna Cum Laude (with high honors) requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.70. Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.90.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE

The tradition of academic dress dates back to the Middle Ages when gowns were a common form of attire in early European universities. Since those universities were founded by the Church, most students were monks or priests, who wore a habit or cloak to which was attached a hood. Gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings and the students could pull up the hoods to cover their heads.

The traditional color of academic gowns has been black to symbolize the democracy of scholarship, but over the years other colors and styles were adapted. In 1896, the colleges and universities of the United States adopted a uniform code governing academic dress.

The style of gown varies according to the academic degree awarded. Bachelor's gowns are cut with long pointed sleeves, master's gowns feature closed slit sleeves, and doctor's gowns are full-cut with wide lapels and double-belled sleeves with three velvet chevrons in either black or colored like the lapels.

The hood, which drapes over the back of the gown, is the most symbolic part of the academic regalia. The color of the border of the hood indicates the scholar's major field of study; the lining color identifies the institution that conferred the wearer's degree.

The following is a list of the most common academic colors:

Saint Xavier University was founded in 1846 by Sister Mary Frances Xavier Warde, R.S.M., and five other Sisters of Mercy. When the school received its charter in 1847, it was one of the first institutions of higher learning in Illinois, and the first in the United States. Throughout its history, Saint Xavier has remained committed to the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, preparing students of all ages, cultures, backgrounds and viewpoints for a life of knowledge and service.

Today, Saint Xavier University is a coeducational, private, Catholic university with a tradition of academic excellence. A dedicated faculty committed to reaching, scholarship and service, excellent facilities and small classes ensure a quality learning experience. With more than 30 undergraduate majors and master's degree programs in business, counseling psychology, education, English, nursing and speech- language pathology, Saint Xavier offers its 4,100 students a firm foundation in the liberal arts along with solid career preparation.

In keeping with the inspiring heritage of the Sisters of Mercy, the University combines academic excellence with social concern and service to the community. Whether by addressing the basic health needs of inner city children, diagnosing and treating children and adults with communication disorders through the Ludden Speech and Language Clinic, or by providing cultural activities for the public to enjoy, Saint Xavier is reaching out to the people of the community and making a real difference in their lives.

Under the guidance of its 12th president, Dr. Richard A. Yanikoski, Saint Xavier will continue to be a leader in providing quality education and meeting the social needs of the community as we head to the 21st century.
