    Summer 2010 Let Freedom Ring! Barbershopping in Philly by Craig Rigg [The following report is a personal observation and does not reflect the views of the Society or the Illinois District. With luck we’ll face only a few lawsuits.] There’s this moment in the recent barbershop documentary Amer- ican Harmony. Jeff Oxley looks at a monitor as Vocal Spectrum appears on stage during the 2006 quartet contest, singing “Cruella DeVille.” He turns and shakes his head, saying, “The So- ciety’s changing, man.” His sentiments pretty much sum up what the 2010 International Convention and Con- tests at Philadelphia was all about. There’s been a changing of the guard. First, let's take the quartet contest. By now, everybody knows that Storm Front finally got the gold (after much cajoling and trash talk). They are the first comedy oriented quartet since FRED to achieve the pinnacle of quartetting. There’s no doubt these guys can sing; they’re Singing scores put them in second place, bested only by Old School (with Illinois's own Joe Krones at bass). In fact, Old School led after the semi-finals by only 17 points, and OS had won each of the first two rounds. All they had to do was maintain their lead and the gold was theirs. Not to be (a phrase you'll hear again later.) So what did Storm Front do that made the difference? Well, a combination of factors proba- bly did it. First, SF staged one heck of an innovative final set. Their first song, with a bit of mock- ing of Old School and up-and-coming Ringmasters from Sweden, lamented their struggle to reach the top.

While you can hear the maturity (and the benefit of having that experience), you can also hear a vibrance that comes only with vocal freedom. 2) “If I Were a Bell” • Flexibility and lightness (an ease with the vocal approach.) • Strong sprinkle of personality and FUN in it. • Notice the smoothness of the tenor and how she “tucks into” the chords and how she takes on the solo part more like a lead rather than an ensemble (as they all do in this quartet), which are very tightly voiced (notes close together to each other) • The chromatics around 1:40 are accurate and balanced well through all voice parts. The Buzz The • Again, the handoff of parts in shared melody is seamless. They ring, they buzz, hence their name. Listen for SAI Queens the chords to sound rich and full. Conventions in barbershop like bell chords, lead-ins, echoes, etc. are handled with aplomb and consistency. 3) “Back in Business” • This quartet is well-versed in all aspects of our craft.

From Prez Jack: Our August 21 performance at Bowers’ School Farm was a result of the “Bob Wallace Four” serenading two ladies during the ride in the parking bus from Log Cabin Days. It amazes me how and where the invitations come to sing at the various events that we do. The power of music is amazing. I continue to be impressed by the relaxed manner that the Big Chief Chorus presents itself. You are quite a likeable bunch. Remember that you are a disciplined chorus with all eyes on the director, but being humble enough to mingle with your audience following the performance. I do regret that I was unable to pass on all the material I had planned but time just didn't allow. A great deal of credit must go to you and your board for the leadership displayed in getting so many of your guys to the retreat. Finally, I must say I was overwhelmed by the generosity shown me by the board. As each generation exerts influence and takes new risks with a music style, the style continues to grow and change. What fun would it be if no one took any risks? We would never have any variety. What if Elvis hadn’t pushed the envelope? Would we have any of the current pop/rap/rock/heavy metal styles that we have today? Everything that we know today came from somewhere or someone long ago. Barbershop harmony is no different and today it is a unique, American art form.     EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S HOD REPORT FALL 2011 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Total attendance: 5,969 Thirty choruses and fifty quartets competed. Planned attendance was 6,250. Twenty-one collegiate quartets completed, each quartet received $1,500 from Harmony Foundation toward their expenses. This was a smaller than hoped for convention attendance but the enthusiasm was great as evidenced by the lobby singing until the wee hours. MEMBERSHIP Total Society chapters (8/28/11): 797. Total Members (8/28/11): 24,326. Society Associates: 332. There are currently 25 license packets out to potential chapters. Two new charters (Germantown, TN and Everglades, FL) have been issued in 2011. HARMONY UNIVERSITY Total student registrations (7/15/11): 448. Number of quartets registered: 20. Number of faculty: 53. Staff: 3. The Chorus Director’s college was the largest attendance ever. 89 students received Harmony Foundation scholarships. Judge candidate school preceded Harmony University for 3 days. 45 students attended; 43 graduated. There were 14 faculty members. HARMONY EXPLOSION CAMPS Harmony Explosion camps have been held in PIO, EVG (2), SUN, CAR, MAD, JAD, SLD and DIX to date. 640 students and 34 teachers have attended. Six more camps are scheduled for the remainder of the year. YOUTH HARMONY WORKSHOPS 25 events have been held to date with 2098 students and 108 teachers in attendance: DIX, RMD (2), LOL (7), CSD (6), MAD (2), FWD (3), SUN, SWD, JAD, PIO. 11 YHW remain to be held this year. Harmony Foundation provides $15/student up to a max of $1,500 per workshop. UPCOMING EVENTS Registrations for the mid-winter convention in Tucson are currently at 347.
