Historic Context Statement City of Benicia February 2011 Benicia, CA Prepared for City of Benicia Department of Public Works & Community Development Prepared by page & turnbull, inc. 1000 Sansome Street, Ste. 200, San Francisco CA 94111 415.362.5154 / www.page-turnbull.com Benicia Historic Context Statement FOREWORD “Benicia is a very pretty place; the situation is well chosen, the land gradually sloping back from the water, with ample space for the spread of the town. The anchorage is excellent, vessels of the largest size being able to tie so near shore as to land goods without lightering. The back country, including the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, is one of the finest agriculture districts in California. Notwithstanding these advantages, Benicia must always remain inferior in commercial advantages, both to San Francisco and Sacramento City.”1 So wrote Bayard Taylor in 1850, less than three years after Benicia’s founding, and another three years before the city would—at least briefly—serve as the capital of California. In the century that followed, Taylor’s assessment was echoed by many authors—that although Benicia had all the ingredients for a great metropolis, it was destined to remain in the shadow of others. Yet these assessments only tell a half truth. While Benicia never became the great commercial center envisioned by its founders, its role in Northern California history is nevertheless one that far outstrips the scale of its geography or the number of its citizens. Benicia gave rise to the first large industrial works in California, hosted the largest train ferries ever constructed, and housed the West Coast’s primary ordnance facility for over 100 years. -

Georgia Studies Teacher Notes for the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Social Studies The Teacher Notes were developed to help teachers understand the depth and breadth of the standards. In some cases, information provided in this document goes beyond the scope of the standards and can be used for background and enrichment information. Please remember that the goal of social studies is not to have students memorize laundry lists of facts, but rather to help them understand the world around them so they can analyze issues, solve problems, think critically, and become informed citizens. TEACHER NOTES GEORGIA STUDIES Historic Understandings SS8H1 Evaluate the impact of European exploration and settlement on American Indians in Georgia. People inhabited Georgia long before its official “founding” on February 12, 1733. The land that became our state was occupied by several different groups for over 12,000 years. The intent of this standard is for students to recognize the long-standing occupation of the region that became Georgia by American Indians and the ways in which their culture was impacted as the Europeans sought control of the region. -

FOG special volume: Proceedings of the 6th European Conference on Scientific Diving 2021 178 pages, 25 contributions Preface We are happy to present the proceedings from the 6th European Conference on Scientific Diving (ECSD), which took place in April 2021 as virtual meeting. The first ECSD took place in Stuttgart, Germany, in 2015. The following conferences were hosted in Kristineberg, Sweden (2016), Funchal, Madeira/Portugal (2017), Orkney, Scotland/UK (2018), and Sopot, Poland (2019), respectively. The 6th ECSD was scheduled for April 2020 but has been postponed due to the Corona pandemic by one year. In total 80 people registered and about 60 participants were online on average during the two days of the meeting (April 21 and 22, 2021). 36 talks and 15 posters were presen-ted and discussed. Some authors and co-authors took advantage of the opportunity to hand in a total of 25 extended abstracts for the proceedings published in the open access journal FOG (Freiberg Online Geoscience). The contributions are categorized into: - Device development - Scientific case studies - Aspects of training scientists to work under water The order of the contributions within these three categories is more or less arbitrary. Please enjoy browsing through the proceedings and do not hesitate to follow up ideas and questions that have been raised and triggered during the meeting. Hopefully, we will meet again in person -

Each chapter of the book is on a treasured object of hers and the significance it has to her major life events. There's a red stone, an orange carnival ticket, a yellow pen, a green brooch, a blue bracelet, an indigo pendant, and a violet cabinet. These items correspond to; her first day at school, the first time she looked forward to something but missed out due to fear, her birthday and entering a writing competition, her graduation and moving out, her wedding, her marriage, and the culmination of these events and the retelling of them to her granddaughter. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to sincerely thank my mentor, Goldberry Long, for guiding me through this process and being a great Creative Writing professor. Taking her class motivated me to do this project and gave me the confidence I needed to explore writing creatively. Patrizia Trotta , MSc Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology Signature ........................................................ 2 ABSTRACT The intention behind this research was to reveal through two interpretive, inter-related studies the perceived needs of differently-labelled youth, collectively addressed in this thesis as ‘the New Generations’, exploring potentially viable ways of working with them in education. The first study focused on youth labelled Indigos, and the second study focused on exploring a possible way of working with the New Generations according to experienced teachers. Both studies drew on lived experience and opinions of educators who have acquired extensive experience respectively with the Indigo phenomenon and with the psychosynthetic educational model. The first study’s results revealed not only Indigos’ self-actualising and self-transcending characteristics and needs, but also indicated that holistic approaches to education appeared to have been successful with them. -

Title: Jones family papers Dates: 1723-1936 Extent: 4.5 cubic feet (9 boxes) Identification: MS 0440 Biographical/Historical Note This collection includes family papers of Noble Jones and his descendents. The Jones' have been active within coastal Georgia since the inception of the original Georgia colony. Noble Jones (1701-1775) came to Georgia from Britain with his son, Noble Wimberley Jones (1724-1805), with James Oglethorpe in the original group of colonists in 1733. He was named Oglethorpe's emissary to Tomochichi and the Yamacraws, and later made a member of the Georgia council and treasurer of the province. He gained land on the Isle of Hope, later to be known as the Wormsloe Plantation. N.W. Jones became a member of the Provincial Congress of 1775 and was chosen as one of Georgia's representatives in the Continental Congress, although he did not attend. He was a member of the Council of Safety, a delegate to Congress in 1781, a leading physician within Georgia and first president of the Georgia Medical Society. George Jones (1766-1838), the son of Noble Wimberly Jones, was active in Georgia law and legislation. Among other responsibilities, he served as register of probates in Chatham County, 1783-1787; Chatham inferior-court justice, 1791-1804, 1813-1817; superior-court judge for the eight-county eastern judicial district, 1804; Georgia House of Representatives, 1792-1793; Georgia Senate 1796-1798, 1813; and mayor of Savannah, 1812-1814. The Wormsloe estate was passed directly from George Jones to his only living son, George Wymberley Jones DeRenne, who was the founder of the Wormsloe Press and dedicated to the collection and publication of Georgia material and would become known as the richest man in Savannah during the period.
