Lucy Braun were scientists who lived and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Annette was born on August 28, 1884 and her younger sister Emma Lucy, or Lucy, as she preferred to be called, was born on April 19, 1889. Their father, George Frederick, was a school principal, and their mother, Emma Maria (Wright), was a retired teacher. Both sisters continued to http://library.cincymuseum.org/ Page 1 of 97 Thursday, July 20, 2017 Annette and E. Lucy Braun Papers - Mss 1064 Cincinnati Museum Center live in their parents house on May Street in Walnut Hills until after their parents died. Later, the sisters moved to a house on Salem Road in Mount Washington. During a time when few women in the United States pursued higher education as a career, each of the Braun sisters became respected scholars and researchers of their fields. As the first woman to earn her Ph.D from the University of Cincinnati in 1911, Annette Braun was an entomologist, studying insects such as moths, butterflies, and leaf miners. Although she was a professor at the University of Cincinnati for several years, Annette decided to pursue her research from home. Often she collected specimens in the field and bred the insects for study. She authored 4 monographs, 63 articles, and a children's story during her life. Annette's collection of Microlepidoptera specimens was donated to the Philadelphia Academy of Science. E. Lucy Braun earned her Ph.D in botany from the University of Cincinnati in 1914 and taught courses at UC. She authored three monographs and many articles. Lucy's herbarium collection was donated to the United States National Museum, now a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and her photograph album of Kentucky and Tennessee forests, c. 1932-1940, is located in the Smithsonian Archives, Washington, D.C. The Braun sisters traveled throughout the United States and Canada, collecting specimens and recording their observations on paper and via photography. It is reported that the sisters would ride the local train line out to the countryside of Ohio, even convincing the engineer to let them off at unofficial stops. In the moonshine- making areas of Kentucky, the sisters became adept at avoiding stills and befriending the locals. E. Lucy Braun in particular was passionate about preserving the natural beauty of the United States. Lucy supported the movement to establish National Primeval Monuments in the United States and she was a member of the Save-Kentucky's- Primeval-Forest League. E. Lucy Braun also was instrumental in establishing the Lynx Prairie Preserve in Adams County, Ohio, which is maintained by the Cincinnati Museum Center. As the Editor of Wild Flower, a publication produced by the Wild Flower Preservation Society of America, Ohio Chapter, in Cincinnati, Ohio, E. Lucy Braun advocated for the preservation of the United States' natural beauty from the tallest mountain to the smallest flower. After her sister died on March 5, 1971, Annette Braun reportedly blossomed during the last years of her life. Annette died on November 27, 1978. The Braun sisters are buried in the historic and naturally beautiful Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum located in Cincinnati, Ohio. For more biographical information on Annette F. and E.
