A checklist of the 24 genera and 364 native species ofBromeliaceae known from Venezuela is presented, including their occurrence by state and indications of which are endemic to the country. A comparison of the number of genera and species known from Mesoamerica (southern Mexico to Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), Ecuador, and Peru is presented, as well as a summary of the number of species and endemic species in each Venezuelan state. RESUMEN. Se presenta un listado de los 24 generos y 364 especies nativas de Bromeliaceae que se conocen de Venezuela, junto con sus distribuciones por estado y una indicaci6n cuales son endemicas a Venezuela. Se presenta tambien una comparaci6n del numero de los generos y especies de Mesoamerica (sur de Mexico a Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, las Guayanas (Guyana, Suriname, Guyana Francesa), Ecuador, y Peru, y un resumen del numero de especies y numero de especies endemicas de cada estado de Venezuela. Eastern North American Plants in Cultivation Many indigenous North American plants are in cultivation, but many equally worthy ones are seldom grown. It often ap- pears that familiar native plants are taken for granted, while more exotic ones - those with the glamor of coming from some- where else - are more commonly cultivated. Perhaps this is what happens everywhere, but perhaps this attitude is a hand- me-down from the time when immigrants to the New World brought with them plants that tied them to the Old. At any rate, in the eastern United States some of the most commonly culti- vated plants are exotic species such as Forsythia species and hy- brids, various species of Ligustrum, Syringa vulgaris, Ilex cre- nata, Magnolia X soulangiana, Malus species and hybrids, Acer platanoides, Asiatic rhododendrons (both evergreen and decidu- ous) and their hybrids, Berberis thunbergii, Abelia X grandi- flora, Vinca minor, and Pachysandra procumbens, to mention only a few examples. This is not to imply, however, that there are few indigenous plants that have "made the grade," horticulturally speaking, for there are many obvious successes. Some plants, such as Cornus florida, have been adopted immediately and widely, but others, such as Phlox stolonifera ’Blue Ridge’ have had to re- ceive an award in Europe before drawing the attention they de- serve here, much as American singers used to have to acquire a foreign reputation before being accepted as worthwhile artists. Examples among the widely grown eastern American trees are Tsuga canadensis; Thuja occidentalis; Pinus strobus (and other species); Quercus rubra, Q. palustris, and Q. -

The list contains the following information: 1) Genus number (the left-hand number) based on the systematic sequence published in the Smith & Downs monograph: Bromeliaceae (Flora Neotropica, number 14, parts 1-3; 1974, 1977, 1979). Whole numbers are as published in the monograph. 2) Species number (the second number) according to its systematic position in the monograph. Note: Taxa not included in the monograph or that have been reclassified have been assigned numbers to reflect their systematic position within the Smith & Downs framework (e.g., taxon 14.1 is related to taxon 14). The utility of this method is that one may assume for example that Tillandsia comarapaensis (150.2) is related to T. didisticha (150) and therefore may have certain horticultural qualities in common with that species. 3) Genus and species names follow the respective numbers. 4) Subspecific taxa (subspecies, varieties, forms) names are indented below the species names. Note: Variety "a" (the type variety) is not listed unless it contains a form (see Aechmea caudata ). Similarly, the type form is not listed. 5) Author name follows the specific and subspecific names. These names are included for the convenience of specialist users of the list. Public Lands Profile: Big Hammock A Land of Dramatic Contrasts Across its 800 acres, Big Hammock Natural Area showcases a fascinating diversity of natural communities of the Lower Atlantic Coastal Plain. For this reason, it was secured by the State of Georgia in 1973, and in 1976 was designated a National Natural Landmark. Despite past harvest of the native longleaf pine and extensive livestock grazing, significant habitat for rare plant and animal species remains intact. A hammock is a rise in elevation of an otherwise flat landscape. Big Hammock Natural Area is dominated by an ancient sand dune that rises from the Altamaha River floodplain to 100 feet above sea level. Between 15,000 to 30,000 years ago, water levels of the Altamaha River fluctuated more than they do now. The river was composed of many smaller braided channels in a sandy bed. During times of drought, the sands would be exposed and transported by dominant winds to the northeast side of the river, forming the dunes that remain today. Similar riverine dunes are occasional throughout Georgia’s Atlantic Coastal Plain on other rivers, such as the Ohoopee and the Ocmulgee, and form a unique part of Georgia’s landscape. It is this sand dune which underlies the natural diversity of Big Hammock NA. The ancient topography causes extreme environmental conditions that morph the vegetation into dramatic contrasts. Evergreen hardwood forest dominates the deep sands of the hammock. Natural fire is suppressed by the Altamaha River on the south side, encouraging the persistence of this fire-intolerant forest type. -

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as respostas fisiológicas sob efeito de reguladores de crescimento nas etapas da micropropagação, bem como, estabelecer um protocolo como subsídio para a conservação. Plântulas germinadas e desenvolvidas in vitro foram inoculadas em meio de cultura MS líquidas estacionário acrescidas de 6-benzilaminopurina (BAP) em diferentes concentrações (0; 2,2; 4,4; 8,8 e 17,6 μM). Para o enraizamento, microbrotos foram transferidos para meio de cultura MS com 0; 2,4; 4,9; 9,8 µM de ácido indolacético (AIA) e ácido indolbutírico (AIB). -

Revised Water Quality Study Plan Alison provided a review of the revisions made to the Water Quality Study Plan stemming from discussion in the 11/13/2019 meeting. • Two additional monitoring sites were added at the east end of the dam • The study period was extended to last from January through December 2021 • Added continuous monitoring (15-minute intervals) for parameters including pH, conductivity, turbidity and monthly nutrient samples Alison added that Kleinschmidt and DESC will go into the field prior to the start of the study to scope out the best locations for monitor installation. -

Rare Vascular Plant Taxa Associated with the Longleaf Pine Ecosystems: Patterns in Taxonomy and Ecology Joan Walker U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, Department of Forest Resources, Clemson University, Clemson, SC 29634 ABSTRACT Ecological, taxonomic and biogeographical characteristics are used to describe the group of 187 rare vascular plant taxa associated with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) throughout its range. Taxonomic and growth form distributions mirror the patterns of common plus rare taxa in the flora. Most of the species have rather narrow habitat preferences, and narrow geo graphic ranges, but a few rare sp~cies with broad habitat tolerances and wider geographic ranges are identified. Ninety-six local endemics are associated with longleaf pine ecosystems. This incidence is as high as in other comparably-sized endemic-rich areas in North America. A distinct geographic trend in rare species composition is indicated. Species fall into 4 groups: Florida longleaf associates, south Atlantic coastal plain, east Gulf coastal plain, and west Gulf coastal plain species. Distributional factors that produce rarity must be considered in the development of conser vation strategies. Overall, conserving longleaf communities rangewide will protect .large ~ numbers of rare plant taxa in Southeastern United States.
