Dear Friends Jesus asked the disciples of John the Baptist, “What are you looking for?” (John 1 verse 38) Their awkward reply suggests that they were not really sure. I write as the season of Epiphany dawns with the story of the wise men that we find in Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 2 verses 1-12. I wonder what they were looking for as they searched the night sky looking for signs, portents and meaning. Humans have always been drawn to look up, to look outward and to imagine things that are beyond our comprehension. What are we looking for? Why did NASA send a spacecraft the size of a grand piano to travel for 13 years at 32,000 mph to take a photo of a rock that has drifted in space undisturbed for four billion years? The first pictures of Ultima Thule, which were published on 2nd January, caused great excitement. Equally bewildering I heard on the radio that 80 satellites, each the size of a shoebox have been launched into space in order to give scientists the capacity to monitor the well being of every tree on the planet. (I’m sure I heard this right!). What are we looking for as we explore the heavens? Professor Stephen Hawking held the view that we needed to find a new planet upon which to live because we soon will have exhausted this one. Others point to the benefits that space travel has brought to everyday life. Sat Nav., the mobile phone and loft insulation, for example. The wise men in Matthew’s story were just the same as us. They were excited by the possibilities of learning. They wanted to understand their place in the universe and push back the boundaries of science. Their imaginations were fired by the boundless possibilities of human capacity. Matthew’s point is that all that they longed for in the depths of their hearts was answered by their encounter with the Christ child in Bethlehem. “What are you looking for?” asks Jesus. He invited John’s uncertain disciples to spend some time with him, and in him they found all that they were looking for. What are you looking for in 2019?

Simon

4 4 5 Sole Bay Team News Ash Wednesday 6th March ’s Pilgrimage In recent years our have begun an annual pilgrimage walking through the Diocese during Lent. On their pilgrimage they have visited church communities, schools, farms, businesses and homes, seeing how the Christian faith connects with, and makes sense of, all the fullness of human life in Suffolk. Ash Wednesday in 2019 falls on Wednesday 6th March. Bishops Martin and Mike are going to start their 2019 pilgrimage on Southwold Pier. There will be a service of Ashing and Holy Communion at 9.00am to which everyone is welcome. If the weather is poor, the service will be in the pier restaurant. Then after a short photocall, the Pilgrimage will start around 10.15am and go via St Mary’s, Reydon to St Peter and St Paul, Wangford where there will be a stop for a bring-your-own lunch. At about 1.30pm the Bishops will leave Wangford, and walk via St Mary's Uggeshall and St Margaret's Stoven to St Peter's, Redisham. 66 66 7 7 Parish News Ho l y Tr i n i t y Bl y th b u r g h Ch u r c h La n e , IP19 9PL Christmas cheer Holy Trinity became a definite centre of attraction over the Christmas period. We had a record-breaking attendance of 190 at the Festival of Lessons and Carols, with close to 40 at the Crib Service, 90 plus for Midnight Mass and over 80 on Christmas morning. Also, congregations (and the villagers we sang carols to, door-to-door) were hugely generous, meaning that we’ll be able divide around £1,500 between our two nominated Christmas charities: Embrace the Middle East, and the Lowestoft based Community Access Trust’s Thin Ice project.

Book launch Just before Christmas, Blythburgh’s resident volunteer Malcolm Doney hosted a reception at the church to launch his new book Lifelines: Notes on life & love, faith & doubt, co-authored with Martin Wroe and published by Unbound. Malcolm says thank you to all who came, and to Southwold Books who sold copies on the night.

Guided tours good start In the autumn of last year we announced that local resident Colin Huggins was offering a free, general interest tour of the church every Thursday at 11am. Colin reports that he started the tours on 11th October and since then has taken a total of 27 people around the church. He says: “These were mainly people passing by around 11am who took up the offer when I told them a tour was available, but included four people who had seen the tours mentioned in Heart & Sole.” We agree that this is a very good start, given the time of year, and are very grateful to Colin for providing this welcome service. If you fancy a tour, there’s no need to book, you simply turn up in the church porch. Children are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult throughout the tour. If you’d like to know more, call or text Colin on 07508888460.

7 FOR A CONSCIENTIOUS RELIABLE SERVICE 25 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE

8 8 9 Parish News (...continued) St. Ma r g a r e t ’s Ch u r ch , Re y d o n Wa n g f o r d Ro a d , IP18 6PB Christmas 2018 Christmas began early in Reydon this year with us having our Christingle on The Feast of Christ the King. We had a large congregation with many children present and, in the 50th year of The Children’s Society starting Christingle celebrations in this country, it was especially enjoyable. A special thanks to the Feast team for their organisation and for making the Christingles the day before. It was a joy to welcome Reydon Primary School to the church for their two Carol Services. Rev Alan told the children the story of The Sleepy Shepherd by Bishop Stephen Cottrell. Each class performed a carol they had been preparing. Our Christmas services went very well and were attended by many people. Over 120 people came to the Carol Service on the 23rd December and a special thanks to St Edmund’s choristers for augmenting the choir. Midnight Mass was also very well attended and the earlier time of 11pm seems to now have been fully accepted. A smaller congregation celebrated our service on Christmas Day and then we had a very full church for our Team Service on 30th December. Reverend Alan Perry Feast On Christmas Eve, at our wonderful ‘Crib Service’, we welcomed many children and adults to celebrate the birth of our Saviour; it really was a joyful time. With the help of a ‘Bible Society’ script, the ‘Feast’ team created a truly amazing and funny story, taking the congregation on an adventure to help the Mouse Detective discover the name of the baby born in a stable. He had plenty of help from the sheep, camel and donkey, all supporting some astonishing ears, as well as an assistant who tried, but wasn’t always helpful. The angel was there to explain the story to the shepherds and to us and the storyteller encouraged everyone to join in and be part of the story. So thanks must go to Alan, Amanda, Faye, Jan, Jonathan, Lorraine, Sue, Sue and Brenda. ‘Feast’ happens on the 4th Sunday of every month. It is an interactive service for all ages. It is a time for everyone to explore their own faith.

9 Parish News (...continued) This may be with a bible study, discussion or craft. You may even be able to discover some new ways of enriching your relationship with God. Everyone is welcome. The Children’s Society Last year marked the 50th anniversary since the foundation of the Children’s Society which helps hundreds of vulnerable children who are dealing with the effects of abuse, alcohol or drug addiction within their families. At the annual box opening in November, the generosity of box holders enabled us to send £418.74p to the Children’s Society, together with £110 from the Christingle service and £148.54p from the proceeds of Coffee and Conversation which is held on the first Wednesday of every month in the Church Room. The Children’s Society is an extremely worthwhile cause, and we are most grateful to everyone who has supported it in any way. Hearing Dogs for the Deaf We were also able to send £166.89p to the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, a charity very close to the heart of the late Elizabeth Trendall. This money was raised from dividing the proceeds of Coffee and Conversation over the year between Hearing Dogs and the Children’s Society. Again thank you to all who have contributed to another very worthy organisation which trains puppies to help, in a practical and companionable way, people of all ages who are struggling with all the isolation, loss of confidence and despair that hearing loss can bring. Brenda Doy and Margaret Thomas Organ Recital Our regular organist, Jonathan Palman, will be giving an organ recital on Sunday, 24th February at 2.30pm in St Margaret’s church. There will be a retiring collection and tea and cake will be served in the church room after the recital. All are welcome! Pat Gee

Café 51 Everyone is invited to come for coffee - and maybe a cake or two - at Cafe 51 in Southwold High Street, every Monday morning between 10am and 12 noon. Meet other like-minded people from other churches in our team and our area! Make new friends and have a good chat!

10 Parish News (...continued) St. La w r e n c e ’s Ch u r ch , So u th Co v e On B1127, NR34 7JD Welcome and warm wishes for a happy and successful 2019 to all our Readers from the Church Family of St. Lawrence. After all the busyness of the past two months, my thoughts were recalling the poem by Coleridge written on 1st February 1842 which begins, ‘One month is past, another is begun, Since merry bells rang out the dying year, And buds of rarest green began to peer, As if impatient for a warmer sun.’ These days, one is encouraged to make a decision to stop at times, to ponder, to wonder and to notice the world around us. This brings to mind another poem which opens with the lines, ‘What is life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.’ by WH Davis. Looking around, the snowdrops have been out for a few weeks, daffodils are about to open if they haven’t already, the songs of birds are heard and spring seems to be about to bloom. On 2nd February, the church celebrates Candlemas, this being the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. There is an old rhyme which goes, ‘When Candlemas Day is bright with sun – Then the winter’s but half begun; But when Candlemas Day is dark with rain – Then the winter’s power is on the wane.’ A few days later, St. Dorothy is remembered on 6th Feb: when weather lore has it that it is the most likely day of the year for snow. Whatever the weather, ‘the snow in winter, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain’, let us enjoy and be grateful for, ‘all good gifts around us’. On Sunday 17th February we have been invited to join with the Sole Bay Team in a special service of Choral Evensong at 6.00pm at St. Peter & St. Paul, Wangford. The renowned ‘Jubilate Choir’, conducted by Martyn Bagnell, will be leading the worship. NB. There will be no afternoon service at St. Lawrence that day. Alison Evans

Christmas lunch Instead of the usual coffee morning, a Christmas lunch was held at the Plough in Wangford, where 29 of our regulars had an enjoyable meal and time together. The meal was paid for from donations given at coffee mornings during the year. A big thank you to our amazing team of organizers!

Festival of Carols on Christmas Eve Our special contribution to Christmas is the traditional Carol Service. The flowers and candles were beautifully displayed by Jennifer Rowling and team, which inspired such a warm festive spirit of ‘togetherness’ in our filled-to-capacity church. Reverend Canon Susannah Izzard conducted the service, which opened with a moving 1st verse solo of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ by young Gwilym Howarth. (A rising star at Snape concerts this past summer.) The following verses were sung by a splendid visiting local choir, led by Sue Taylor. A number of choir members solos were enjoyed throughout the evening and Alison Evans played the organ, rousing us all to enjoy the rest of our Carol Service and Lessons. These were individually read by familiar faces who volunteer year after year to take part, some starting as children and now in adulthood. The Crib Scene is a time of joy, seeing the youngest children of the congregation playing their part in this traditional Christmas story. During the evening generous donations of £500 were gratefully received on behalf of EACH (East Anglian Children’s Hospice). A fulsome letter of appreciation has been received by Colonel Crisp from Laura Southcott of EACH describing the ways in which the needs of children and families are being helped by our continuing support of the hospice. Finally, it was most satisfying to hear Ray Simmons (Trumpet) and Alison Evans (Organ) round off our happy occasion with the music ‘Joy to the World’. On leaving the church, amid happy greetings and chatter, we were endowed with tasty nibbles and drinks from volunteers of our community, and to whom I now, on behalf of the village and PCC, offer a big thank you for the success of this special annual occasion. (...continued) 21 Parish News (...continued) Christmas is a hectic period for the Ministers and Readers in our Sole Bay team and everyone is caught up in the flurry of activities at this exciting time of the year, so it is appreciated that, with sometimes few in the congregation, we have the support of our ministers, Simon, Hugh and Andrew- and not forgetting Sue Taylor our organist and Clare our chorister setting the scene! Uggeshall Cinema Another exciting innovation is underway in the Old School Hall. Matt Grady of Mill House, and associates, showed the first film, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, here on December 6th. Approximately twenty people attended and, together with interval ice-cream and drinks, we enjoyed the evening immensely. Matt has now obtained a Film Licence on behalf of the PCC and our first monthly film of 2019 was shown on Thursday 10th January 2019 – ‘The Greatest Showman’. A contribution of £3 helped cover hiring costs. Details of future films will be in the Messenger, along with those of our successful Gardening Group so you can plan ahead – everyone welcome! Coffee mornings are open to all on the 1st Thursday in the month. 2019 is truly underway as I write this with all the hopes that are dear to us. Remembering last post-Christmas snow and freezing weather, which had many house bound or cut off, can we again look out for each other as before should needs arise? Our traditional service of Lessons and Carols was packed to bursting, filling extra chairs placed in the nave and at the rear. There was the usual wonderful atmosphere, with candles on the window ledges and a fully decorated church. The choir was magnificent and there were readings from a varied selection of members of the community. This was another successful start to the Christmas period, followed by an almost equally packed Crib Service on Christmas Eve. Children dressed as characters from the Nativity approached two Marys, “One breathing, one not!”, and both kings and queens brought gifts! There was the added glamour of a tinsel clad star. Professor Hugh Williamson, Lay Elder from Southwold, joined with excellent young readers to wonderfully communicate the Christmas story. His presence for the first time at this service was much appreciated. Thank you to all who participated with the music, costumes, and reading. The retiring collection will benefit the life of our community and the work of the Suffolk Community Foundation.

Before Christmas, during a Sunday service, Penny Buncombe was commissioned to serve as a Lay Elder for a further three years. Thank you, Penny, for your commitment both to St. Andrew’s and to the Team.

23 Would you like to be the Recorder for: REYDON with EASTON BAVANTS The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the ‘present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’. A Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items.

If you are interested, please look at the Recorders Pack by visiting www.slhc. org.uk to acquaint yourself with the guidelines of the scheme. You do not need to be a historian; you do not need any qualifications other than an interest in your parish. In return you will receive a copy of the SLHC Newsletter and be invited to the annual conference specifically for Local Recorders.

Hope of Spring! Wangford had much to rejoice about over Christmas. The re-introduction of a carol service in December was well received, the carol singers round the village did great work and our church saw a good number of people over the festive season, for worship, for refreshments and chatter. Saturday 12th January saw the church packed with about 270 (all seated) for a truly wonderful service of thanksgiving and celebration for the life of Sidi Scott, with tributes both personal and musical from many dear friends. We continue to miss her presence with us each Sunday. On Sunday 17th February we will be welcoming the Jubilate Choir, directed by Martyn Bagnall for a choral evensong at 6pm. Please do come and join us. We don’t usually have a service of evensong and to have a very special choir will be a great treat. News and views from around the Community . . .(continued)

Appeal from the 1st Southwold Scout Group We’re one of the oldest groups in the UK, formed 110 years ago, yet we are struggling to provide scouting for the young people in our area. Our problem is a lack of volunteers to help as scout leaders and administrative support. Could you help? Our executive committee manages our premises and resources. We need to rebuild our headquarters in Mights Road, so fundraising will be important. The committee meets only during term time, usually once a month. Our treasurer wants to stand down after 14 years, as soon as possible, but will stay on to help a new treasurer settle in. Could this be you? Or could you be a leader or assistant leader to either our Beavers (aged 6 to 8), Cubs (8 to 10) or Scouts (10 to 14 )? You may have once been a Scout or Guide or not, as free training is given. It’s rewarding and fun, giving youngsters skills for life. To conform to charity rules and for safeguarding, leaders and committee members have a free DBS check. Remembrance at St Mary’s Church, Uggeshall I called in at the church just before 11.00 and stood with the silhouette of ‘Tommy’ in the churchyard; it was so quiet, sunny and peaceful and my thoughts turned to the young men of Uggeshall that never came home again. Not only that, but I worked with men on the farms that did return. One was a horseman who still suffered from shell shock and when fire bombs and high explosive fell on the Uggeshall Manor Farm fields he hid himself away because he was so scared, he told me that he was with two pals advancing over open ground when they were hit by machine gun fire his pal on his right fell down dead and the other pal on his left fell down dead also while he fell with a bullet in his leg near his knee. He was sent back to England patched up and returned to the front for the rest of the war as a stretcher bearer. He didn’t come home until another 3 years after the war ended because he had to help clear up the debris left on the battlefields Another man who worked with me only had one lung owing to being gassed on the front, he was ill a lot of the time. Mr P.A.Stannard who farmed Uggeshall Hall, Manor Farm and the Elms farm at Wangford also fought in the Great War, looked Continued over/

29 after the old soldiers who worked for him as he himself was at Gallipoli: many local Home Guard men wore medals with pride and one who lived near where Ashton’s Garage is now wore the Military Medal.

Ray Edwards Ray has a huge amount of recorded history of surrounding parishes, which he loves to share – lest we forget! I am grateful that he passes some on to me to share with you. At 11am on that November morning we gathered inside St. Mary’s ancient church, to offer respect and gratitude, along with others of this nation and beyond, in those 2 minutes of poignant silence. At its end I was surprised to hear the familiar ‘Last Post’ trumpet playing. I thought it was a recording of Ray Simmons customary rendition, in his absence this year; I was surprised to find this wonderful music was being beautifully performed by our organist, Sue – of many talents! 14th February - Valentine’s Day There are two confusing things about this day of romance and anonymous love- cards strewn with lace, cupids and ribbon: firstly, there seems to have been two different Valentines in the 4th century - one a priest martyred on the Flaminian Way, under the Roman Emperor Claudius II who needed soldiers and suspected that marriage made men want to stay at home with their wives, instead of fighting wars, and so he outlawed marriage. A kind-hearted young priest named Valentine felt sorry for all the couples who wanted to marry but now couldn’t. So secretly he married as many couples as he could - until the Emperor found out and condemned him to death. While he was in prison awaiting execution, Valentine showed love and compassion to everyone around him, including his jailer. The jailer had a young daughter who was blind, but through Valentine’s prayers, she was healed. Just before his death in Rome on 14 February, he wrote her a farewell message signed ‘From your Valentine.’ So the very first Valentine card was not between lovers, but between a priest about to die, and a little girl, healed through his prayers. So why has Valentine become the patron saint of romantic love? By Chaucer’s time the link was assumed to be because on these saints’ day - 14 February - the birds are supposed to pair. Or perhaps the custom of seeking a partner on St Valentine’s Day is a surviving scrap of the old Roman Lupercalia festival, which took place in the middle of February.

Church of England parishes supporting winter shelters More than 2,300 congregations are running or supporting night shelters this winter as homelessness projects expand to cope with rising demand. Some of these ‘church’ night shelters are adding extra beds, and others are opening for longer during the week. The Rt Rev James Langstaff, , and Chair of the Christian housing charity, Housing Justice, said: ‘The reasons why people end up on the streets are complex, with many facing mental ill-health, many having been in care as children, and a good number having been released from prison. ‘Behind the distressing rise in numbers, we must remember that behind each statistic is a person, a human being made in God’s image and thus worthy of dignity. I give thanks for all those who work tirelessly to serve those who live on our streets or in other unstable settings.’
