The Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev James Langstaff, has presided at a ceremony to dedicate the newly opened Bishop Chavasse Church of England Primary School. The Bishop was welcomed by Headteacher Donna Weeks and reception pupils to a grand opening ceremony on Friday 1st December. Based on land next to the new Somerhill Green development, Bishop Chavasse Church of England Primary School opened its doors in September to its first two classes of reception children. The opening of this traditionally run primary school marks the return of Church of England education to Tonbridge. Until recently, parents who wanted a Church of England education had to travel outside of the town to the nearest church school in Tunbridge Wells. The new school, which has been made possible with money from central government, adds new primary places and significant capacity to Tonbridge and the families it serves. Tom Tugendhat MP for Tonbridge and Malling, who marked the event by cutting the ribbon and officially opening the school, said “I am delighted to have had the privilege of opening Bishop Chavasse Primary School today. This is already a fantastic school adding to the range serving the needs of our community here, in Tonbridge. I’m proud to have played a small part in making today a reality. I’m pleased that we can celebrate all the hard work that has gone into this school today and I wish everyone involved best wishes for the future.” Bishop Chavasse Church of England School is part of the Tenax Schools Trust that is led by the highly acclaimed Bennett Memorial Diocesan School in Tunbridge Wells. CEO Ian Bauckham CBE said “This school was developed in response to families who wanted the option of sending their children to a Church of England school. It’s very much a community based school with Christian values at its core, and is open to children of all faiths and none”. The Headteacher Donna Weeks said “It’s been a tremendous honour to welcome Bishop James to a school named after one of his most eminent predecessors, Bishop Christopher Chavasse. I am so proud of the children and our wonderful school community who have supported this event today”. Registered Charity No. 1132122 | Company Registration No. 6953650 NOTES for Editors Tenax Schools Trust submitted a bid to the Department for Education in 2014 for a new primary school in Tonbridge. The rationale for the bid was threefold: to enable Tonbridge parents to have the choice of a Church of England Primary School as one does not currently exist in the Town; to cater for the rapid population growth and lack of sufficient places for reception aged children; and the need for more good and outstanding primary schools in the area. The bid promised a traditional primary education for 60 pupils in each year group underpinned by a Christian ethos. In terms of admissions, up to 25% of places (up to 15 places annually) will be allocated on the basis on parental attendance at a Church of England Church. The project is supported by Kent County Council as a key element of their strategy to meet demand for much needed primary places in Tonbridge. The Education Funding Agency secured the land in Tudeley Lane adjacent to the new housing development at Somerhill Green in December 2016 subject to planning consent, will be the permanent site for the school. A planning application for full planning permission for temporary buildings and outline permission for the permanent building was submitted to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council on 19 December and approved in March 2017. The Secretary of State has entered into a funding agreement with the Trust. Before doing this, Tenax Schools Trust were required to consult with the local community and other interested parties on their plans for the school. This showed overwhelming support for the school with 86% of respondents agreeing that there was a need for a new Church of England Primary School in Tonbridge. Bishop Chavasse Primary School is also being supported by Schools at Somerhill who have offered the use of their sports and recreational facilities as part of their charitable and community engagement. Christopher Chavasse was bishop of Rochester from 1940 to 1960, and twin brother to Captain Noel Chavasse, an army medic who is one of only three servicemen ever to be awarded the Victoria Cross twice.
