As always, WXXI-TV will continue to provide programs that are thought- provoking, entertaining, and inspiring – and in February, it includes select documentaries in celebration of Black History Month. We’ll be airing a new film—The Birth of a Movement – that looks at how D.W. Griffith’s 1915 The Birth of a Nation unleashed a battle still waging today about race relations, representation, and the power and influence of Hollywood. WXXI will also be presenting Africa’s Great Civilizations, a three-part series that brings to life the epic stories of African kingdoms and cultures hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. On the radio side, Classical 91.5 brings you a tribute to the great soprano Leontyne Price and AM 1370 will broadcast a three-part series, Historically Black, showcasing some of The Washington Post’s Historically Black Tumblr project’s objects discussed through interviews. At the Little Theatre on February 27 we’ll be hosting a free screening of the new documentary that looks at the prolific life of author and activist Maya Angelou. The screening is in partnership with Writers and Books, and a panel discussion will follow. All these programs and more are listed on the following pages of this magazine and online at WXXI.org/bh. I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on Connections with Evan Dawson to discuss the power of an informed community in an era of “fake news.” I was joined by my colleagues Michael Oreskes, Senior Vice President of News and Editorial Director for NPR and Neal Shapiro, President of WNET New York and former President of NBC News to talk about public media’s responsibility to help audiences decipher information and sort through what is real and what isn’t. During the show, Michael said something we strongly agree with. “At the end of the day, the success of our democracy is an informed electorate.” If you didn’t hear the show (from January 10), I encourage you to listen to the podcast, archived at WXXInews.org/connections. I hope you and your family enjoy the launch of our new kids channel, the program additions that we were able to make on WXXI Create as a result of that channel, as well as the many special programs we have scheduled in honor of Black History Month.

Objects hold history. They’re evocative of stories stamped in time. As part of The Washington Post’s coverage of the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture, people submitted dozens of objects that make up their own lived experiences of black history, creating a “people’s museum” of personal objects, family photos and more. Historically Black, a three part series, brings those objects and their stories to life through interviews, archival sound and music. The Washington Post and APM Reports are proud to collaborate in presenting these rich personal histories, along with hosts Keegan-Michael Key, Roxane Gay, Issa Rae and Another Round hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton.
