South High Magnet the student handbook School 2021-2022 28952 2021-2022 South High Magnet School Student Handbook Multi-Tiered System of Support for Behavior (MTSS-B) is being implemented in all Omaha Public Schools and Programs. We believe… We cannot “make” students learn or behave. But we CAN create environments to increase the likelihood that students learn and behave. We CAN create environments to increase the likelihood of positive behaviors occurring. These environments are guided by a set of standardized practices implemented with consistency and fidelity. MTSS-B is a problem-solving framework for teaching desired behaviors in each school. MTSS-B utilizes consistent practices that have tiers of increasingly intensive supports to increase the likelihood students are academically, emotionally, behaviorally and socially successful. With consistent implementation, Multi-Tiered System of Support for Behavior • Improves the school climate • Reduces aggressive behaviors • Reduces major disciplinary infractions such as suspensions • Improves concentration, positive social behavior, and emotional regulation • Improves academic achievement. If you would like more information about how MTSS-B is implemented in your school, contact the building principal. 2021-2022 South High Magnet School Student Handbook a world of choices at: Omaha South High Magnet School 4519 South 24th Street / Omaha, Nebraska 68107-1894 531-299-2780 / south.ops.org Information Technology & Visual & Performing Arts & Dual Language Magnet Mission Statement The mission of Omaha South High Magnet School is to prepare all students to reach their highest academic potential, develop skills in technology, demonstrate creative expression, and practice respect for others. Jodi Pesek, Principal School History Omaha South Magnet High School represents an important part of Omaha’s educational development. The first South Omaha School building was erected in 1887 at 25th and L Streets. It was a two story brick building used for an elementary school. In 1889 the first high school classes were held in the building. South Omaha had a population of 5000, and there were five members of the first class of South Omaha High School. In 1905, a new twenty-one room, three story building was constructed at 23rd and J Streets. In 1908, South High began using the vacant store buildings west of 24th Street for classes because of inadequate space in the existing building. South Omaha was annexed by the city of Omaha in 1915, and the school’s name was changed to Omaha South High School. One year later the original building on 25th Street was demolished. The school acquired an athletic field two blocks south of the building which is still in use today. Under principal R.M. Marrs, a new eighty-room building was constructed in 1926 at a cost of $800,000.
