We are pleased to announce that Amy Conn has been selected as the Uniformed Employee of the Second Quarter of 2020! She was recently recognized, and is pictured here receiving her certificate from Hazel Peterson, Warden. Amy, a First Sergeant at the Central Unit in Norton, was nominated because she rarely misses a shift and does an excellent job no matter what post she is assigned to work. For example, in D-Unit she is always up walking around making sure tasks are getting completed and making sure everyone is safe. She also does a great job in the Control Center and takes the time to announce the events. She is a great officer and — AMY CONN — supervisor.

We are pleased to announce that Angela Sorter has been selected as the Contract Employee of the Second Quarter of 2020! She was recently recognized, and she is pictured here receiving her certificate from Hazel Peterson, Warden. Nurse Sorter is an outstanding asset to the Norton Correctional Facility’s medical team. She is an essential part of the night shift crew that maintains the day-to- day operation to provide medical care to the offender population. According to her nomination, Nurse Sorter is always early to work and never calls in sick. She takes her duties very seriously and is a true professional. She was recently tasked with training a new RN for the night shift, and she did an excellent job training the nurse to ensure she understood how to use the computer system and properly complete paperwork and daily tasks.

— ANGELA SORTER — We are pleased to announce that Kelly Karnopp has been selected as the Non- Uniformed Employee of the Second Quarter of 2020! He was recently recognized, and he is pictured here receiving his certificate from Hazel Peterson, Warden. After working at Wheels for the World for several years, Kelly transferred to the Powerhouse in March of 2019. Having worked in security for many years, he was able to bring a security insight to the facility’s Maintenance Department that was not previously there. In his current position, Kelly has been responsible for supervising two Powerhouse porters as they’ve worked to reorganize the Powerhouse. By relocating the plumbing shop and the wood shop, they will ensure inventories can be closely monitored for the new inventory system. Kelly recently began having his porters clean the main room of the Powerhouse, and they have worked to clean and repair microwaves and ice machines so he has them ready to swap out instead of trying to repair them in the living units. Kelly has the ability to drive the forklift and other equipment, and he has general mechanical experience. He has become proficient in the SMART system and the new inventory system as well. Maintenance staff are able to bring parts in and Kelly is able to get information to look up the parts and get them — KELLY KARNOPP — ordered. He has received the nickname, “The Parts Man Karnopp”, from some of the maintenance staff because he is able to get parts delivered in such a timely manner. Kelly has been a blessing to the Maintenance Department.

We are pleased to announce that Rose Christen has been selected as the Contract Employee of the Second Quarter of 2020! She was recently recognized, and she is pictured here receiving her certificate from Hazel Peterson, Warden. Nurse Christen was nominated because she is always willing to help complete any task when needed. According to her nomination, she always has an upbeat attitude and is fun to be around. THE NORTON TTELEGRAMELEGRAM

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2020 OpinionOpinion PAGE 4 Progress can be measured Out here in western Kansas, we like to think of ourselves as insulated from racial issues and political questions, but we no longer live in some lily-white Steve Haynes world where we can pat ourselves on the back with the assurance that it’s not our problem. If we want to live up to the promise of America, to the ideals Thomas Jefferson so eloquently addressed in the Declara- tion of Independence, we still have a long ways to go. For while Jefferson’s vision may have been blurred, and his character fl awed, his ideas and ideals shine before us yet today, almost 250 years later, as a goal and a challenge. To say America has not lived up to its ideals is hardly new. We know we have not. But do not say we have not tried, or that we do not continue to strive to reach the heights he set out in the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. We should know by now that it’s not possible to fi nd heroes who will meet our standards in any generation. Jefferson himself, forward thinker that he was, is as good an example as we might fi nd. He was said to have hated slavery yet owned slaves, fathered children by one, at least, and yet never freed them. He saw them as essential to his life as a Virginia planter, as did most of his contemporaries. His grand vision that “all men are created equal” apparently was meant to apply only to white, property-owning males of a certain class. The irony of this contra- dictory thinking is entwined in our history since. We had to fi ght a terrible war to end slavery, it took a century and a half to give women the vote, nearly another century to make them full participants in the system. And we still have not fully dealt with the remains of the slave system, which brought blacks to our shores in chains, then relegated them to the lowest of class- es, kept millions in a kind of economic subjugation that kept them, legally and practically, apart. Progress we have made: We elected a Black man as president, all but buried the Confederate battle fl ag, the Stars and Bars, and ordered equal treatment for all.
