As a ‘border practice’ that crosses and pushes boundaries, Live Art has been one of the most responsive ways in which artists have been addressing the shifting notion of borders and connected societal issues. From this perspective, the ephemerality, flexibility and resilience of Live Art become a privileged way to investigate urgent current political changes and struggles within and across borders. This Guide explores the notion of border in relation to Live Art and the works of experimental artists that have been addressing issues around physical borders, with a special focus on the current European situation and its multiple crises. The Guide includes a theoretical introduction on the relation between Live Art and social sciences’ border theories; a focus on how practitioners are responding to the current shifting European border landscapes through a series of interviews published on the blog ‘performingborders. It is uneven, performative, aural, porous, shifting, changing, fixed, relative, internalised, multiple, returning, ubiquitous. The border is a negotiation, a threshold, a liminal, temporal contingent ‘space’, overdetermined framing, classed, racist, financed, commercial, violent, passive-aggressive. It is a ‘wound’, a residence, a ‘home’, a text, a subtext, a superego, a shibboleth, deconstructed, reconstructed, electrified, media, stupid.1 In the last decades borders have become a crucial site for political research and artistic practice.2 In its crossing borders and entering different fields, Live Art has been experiencing what political theorists Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson, in their analysis of borders within the contemporary world, call the ‘productive power of borders’: their role in the fabrication of the world as a centre of contemporary experience.3 If ‘criticality is a strategy for the production of knowledge’,4 Live Art practices sit at the very centre of such criticalities, working on boundaries between disciplines, media, and social, political and economic issues. This introductory essay to the Study Room Guide investigates conceptual routes to make sense of discourses about the relationships between borders, Live Art and the production of knowledge. As per Allan Kaprow’s definition of ‘happenings’: ‘context rather than category. Flow rather than work of art.’6 Interestingly, in the many definitions of Live and Performance Art there is a common and constant reference to the work that artists do at the ‘borders’.7 Focusing on this common reference to the border and the liminal function and approaches of Live Art, this essay references border studies in order to understand the potentialities of the concept of border as a site of knowledge production.8 Live Art and Borders The ‘invention’ of borders in Europe marks the birth of the modern nation- state, with the term border replacing former notions such as the Roman Empire’s limes and the Medieval marches. This process synthesised what Étienne Balibar, one of the authorities on the study of borders in the last decades, defines as territorialisation of space.9 Although for him borders’ function of demarcation and territorialisation is still present today, the territorialisation of space, linked only with the most common idea of border as a tool for mapping, is a one-sided ‘philosophically speaking approach’.10 Balibar declares that ‘any process of ‘territorialisation’ is also the reverse side of another, opposite, process of ‘ deterritorialization’, which takes place before, or after, or simultaneously’.11 In his opinion, if we use the generalised concept of ‘territory’12 – that along with the division and articulation of spatial units includes their ‘institutional counterparts’,13 that is, the ‘power structures that shape spaces, languages, moralities, symbols, productive activities etc. – to ‘territorialize’ means to assign ‘identities’ for collective subjects within structures of 5 Summers, R. ‘Vaginal Davis does Art History’, in Harris, J.     Akala – rapper Kingslee James McLean Daley (born 1 December 1983), better known by the stage name Akala, is an English rapper, journalist, author, poet, and political activist. Originally from Kentish Town, London he is the younger brother of rapper/vocalist Ms. Dynamite. In 2006, he was voted the Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Brighton in 2018. He chose the stage name Akala, a Buddhist term for "Immovable”, and started releasing music in 2003 from his own independent music label, Illa State Records. He released his first mixtape, entitled The War Mixtape, in 2004. In 2006 he released his first album – It's Not a Rumour. This proved to be his breakthrough album, containing the single "Shakespeare" – a reference to his self-proclaimed title "The Black Shakespeare" – which made the BBC Radio 1 playlist. His work was recognised with the MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act. Additionally in 2006, a mixtape, A Little Darker, was released under the name "Illa State", featuring Akala and his sister, Ms. Dynamite, as well as cameo appearances by many other artists. Akala appeared for a live session on BBC Radio 1Xtra where he was challenged to come up with a rap containing as many Shakespeare play titles as he could manage. Akala wrote and performed a minute-long rap containing 27 different Shakespeare play titles in under half an hour. He later recorded these lyrics in the studio and turned it into the single "Comedy Tragedy History". In 2007 Akala followed up his breakthrough album with his Freedom Lasso album, containing the "Comedy Tragedy History" track.

Akala and the empowering potential of the Bard’s poetry by Marco Canani In 1995 Artis Leon Ivey Jr., the Afro-American rapper best known by his stage name Coolio, released one of his most popular hits, “Gangsta’s Paradise”. The song – which samples the chorus and instrumentation of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise” (1976) – featured in the soundtrack of Dangerous Minds (1995), a motion picture based on Lou Anne Johnson’s autobiography, My Posse Don’t Do Homework (1992). Johnson, a former US Marine, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, lands a job as an English teacher in a school of unprivileged teenagers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Unfortunately, her tough experience in the Armed Forces does not come in handy as she struggles to keep a hold on the students, who are far busier coping with the hardship of poverty and exclusion – fighting in gangs, taking drugs, and hustling – than they are with their reading list. Just as she is about to lose hope and quit, Johnson devises the “Dylan/Dylan Contest”, a class competition that moves from a close-reading to an allegorical interpretation of such Bob Dylan’s songs as “Let Me Die in My Footsteps” (1963) and “Mr Tambourine Man” (1965), and Dylan Thomas’s poem “Do not go gentle into that good night” (1947). This teaching strategy proves successful in engaging her students, who eventually realize, to quote Bourdieu, that “ability or talent is itself the Saggi/Ensayos/Essais/Essays Will forever young! Recent work oriented towards race in Shakespeare studies has involved calls not just for critical attention to race as an ever-present, constitutive element of Shakespeare but also for modes of scholarship and criticism that actively promote critical race studies, diversity and inclusivity within the field. In her extraordinarily reflective study of race, Shakespeare and contemporary America, Ayanna Thompson describes her work ‘as an act of intervention and activism’ (2011: 128). Thompson urges the various constituencies of the book’s audience, including teachers, theatre practitioners and community activists to facilitate discussions about race both in and through Shakespeare, which she argues might be at its most valuable where it is destabilized or regarded as an ongoing process. Thompson’s call is echoed by Ruben Espinosa (2016), who showcases the important work within the field around race and diversity, yet also
