District Governor Martin February 2013 Forsyth-Thompson and DGA Christina Volumn 8

Dear fellow Rotarians, Anns, Members of Inner Wheel, Rotaractors, Interactors and the Family of Rotary, We have just celebrated Rotary Awareness month and I was very glad to see that many Clubs took advantage of showcasing their Clubs activities in the local media, on their Web sites, Facebook as well as public activities. I have yet to receive any applications for the Presidential Citation Awards; time is running out friends, so please get your Club boards to take action. Only two nominations have been received to date for the Rotarian Spouse/Partner Service awards. I am sure there are lots of deserving partners in our District! My DG’s visits during January were once again fulfilling and wonderfully enlightening. The first visit was to West, Region 4 (West Rand) from 10 - 12 January under my Personal Representative PDG Ernie Hendriks and DGAPR Shirley, involved meetings with the Boards of eight Clubs namely: , Roodepoort Central, Monument, Honeydew Merlin, Krugersdorp, Carletonville, , Westonaria.

The meetings all went well and Clubs are taking seriously the need to do things differently and to encourage new members into our wonderful organisation. It was a special opportunity to meet informally with Club Presidents and their Anns at the Meet and Greet party kindly hosted By DGPR Ernie and DGAPR Shirley’s charming house. It was fulfilling to experience again the warmth, love and fellowship shown to Christina and me accompanied by DGPR Ernie and DGAPR Shirley, and AG Mgezi Mazibuko on our visits. Our visit to two projects with the President of Krugersdorp Rotary Club and Club members was enlightening. Christina and I invite you all to attend the 2013 Discon in Swaziland. It will be held between 3-6 June and the link to register online has been sent. We look forward to seeing you there! DGPR Ernie, DG, and Pres. Marius The news of the Rotary Family Health Days from 9 - 11 May 2013 was once again received with enthusiasm and commitment by all the Clubs, so much so that some of the West Rand Clubs are working together on selected sites. Well done my friends in the West Rand: you are all doing exceptional things in your communities AND committed to growing membership. Keep it up!

On the Saturday afternoon a regional seminar was held where AG Grant Daly travelled all the way from Limpopo to present a very useful talk on CSI /PBO and PDG Shirley Downie on PR (below ) in the District and the model for the RFH days in May.

In the evening we attended a lovely banquet at the Discovery Bowling Club, where the Master of Ceremonies PP Dave Jankolowitz kept us in fits of laughter. Christina and I received a wonderful gift from the Clubs. Thank you.

Our second Regional visit was to Gauteng North Central, Region 2, from 24 - 26 January under DGPR Francis and DGAPR Janet Callard and AGs Peter van Schaardenburgh and David Grant .Club Boards that met with me were: RC or Orange Grove

The President of the Club attended the Saturday evening banquet at Northcliff‘s meeting place, Golf Club.

The projects visited (Queen Alexander Nursing Home (Parktown Excalibur), St.Vincent Master of PP. (Randburg Anns), Northcliff’s amazing David Wheelchair warehouse, and the Ann Harding Jankolowitz Cheshire Home (Blackheath) were all amazing (Krugersdorp) and made me proud to be a Rotarian. at evening banquet - West Once again the fantastic hospitality, food and Rand visit drink supplied by DGAPR Francis & DGAPR Janet at their home for the Meet and Greet on Friday night was a great opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.

Thank you all so much! On Saturday afternoon, Clubs gave amazing power DGAPR Shirley, Pres. Lerato and DGA Christina point presentations on their activities and what makes them tick….great job done. If I wasn’t a Rotarian I would have signed up there and then! PDG Mark Doyle kindly gave a presentation on the background to the Rotary Family Health days and an update on plans for the May events.

This was followed by a presentation by PDG Francis as District Membership Chair on Rotary by Numbers was an eye opener, we really need to stop the bleeding of membership and grow membership in our District.

The banquet in the evening was fun and well organized and as usual the hospitality and friendship shown to Christina and me was, as always, superb. Thank you for the lovely gift of Royal Doulton wine goblets all our old and new-found Rotary friends!

KHUTSO MATLOU was the ROJAC WINNER for 2012 and exchanged to Brazil for six weeks. Khutso enjoyed his stay in Brazil and can now even have a conversation in Portuguese.

KATRIEN NEL was a Short Term student and paid a visit to FINLAND for six weeks. The family that was responsible for hosting Katrien made her stay in Finland a very pleasant one and she can even speak some Finish. Her little host sister could not communicate in English so she was forced to learn to communicate with her family. She enjoyed a WHITE CHRISTMAS with great memories.

DGA NEWS…. From the desk of DGA Christina!

Peace Cranes feature prominently at Krugersdorp’s club house. Our first visits of the New Year, took us to the far West Rand with The small Ann Club of Monument supports the Boxing Club of Shirley and Ernie Hendriks, Krugersdorp West, where underprivileged youngsters are taught the where I met with the Ann Clubs art of boxing – certainly a more worthwhile past-time than venting of Krugersdorp, Roodepoort aggression in the streets. They are presently keeping the ablutions in clean condition and sourcing towels The Krugersdorp Anns were still from the Humanitarian Centre. They also support the community in proudly displaying their other ways, either through their own projects or with the Rotarians. Christmas tree decorated with Peace Cranes, which also featured prominently as décor on the club walls. Thank you ladies: for a club that resisted you haven’t done badly and that tutorial was clearly inspiring! We visited the Rainbow Home in Randfontein for disabled children suffering from cerebral palsy and other afflictions. It was wonderful to see how Daisy, Jill’s very elegant French poodle who is also a therapy dog, interacted with the children. One little girl, who lives in her own world, visibly brightened up when Daisy arrived. I never fail to be inspired when I see the positive impact . that animals can have on lives. This visit culminated in a Sunday morning at Soweto, where we were shown around by the delightful RC of Soweto President Lerato Ntoane. This was such a treat: the vibe and atmosphere is electric and we loved it! There’s a possibility of a new Rotary Club opening there in Meadowlands and Lerato also takes a keen interest in the Anns – I have sent her information so she can find out more!

The end of January marked my last visits for my year with DGAPR Janet Callard. I spent quality time with Orange Grove, IW Parktown Excalibur, Northcliff, Randburg and Rosebank. Helen Stone, President of the Johannesburg Anns Club, who I met on an earlier visit, also attended the lively discussions with the latter three clubs. Sadly, the Morningside Anns decided to give my visit a miss which was a shame, as I had looked forward to having discussions with this small but active group. One of the topics discussed in-depth is the forthcoming Rotary Family Health Days, which promise to have such a positive impact on our District. Jean

It is gratifying to see growing enthusiasm among the Anns for attending POETS, which clearly motivates the ladies, as well as provides the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas. The passing on of information from Club Runner via PDGA Rosalind Cartwright has opened up the channels of communication and many Anns report that they now feel better informed and part of the Rotary family. Rosalind and I are working on tying up loose ends so please let us know if you are still “off the radar”.

On the minus side, there is concern that some clubs are getting “old” with very few younger women joining. We hope this will partly be alleviated through the coming Rotary Family Health Days that have done so much to grow membership elsewhere – in Uganda by over 30% for example, with even Cabinet Ministers becoming Rotarians. Hopefully, this will also generate some new Anns and IW members.

Chinese New Year: 2013 Happy New Year to our Chinese members - The Year of the Snake Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese year 4711 begins on Feb. 10, 2013. Chinese months are reckoned by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. In China, people may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare for and celebrate the New Year. A Charming New Year Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those born in snake years are wise, charming, gregarious, introverted, generous, and smart. Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Jean Simmons, Oprah Winfrey, Virginia Woolf, Brad Pitt, Greta Garbo, and Sir Roger Bannister were born in the year of the snake. Janet, Margaret, Gill and I visited Northcliff Anns’ Victim Empowerment Centre in Sophia Town, where the dedicated Issie counsels for a myriad of tragic situations involving abuse, drugs and shocking social standards. A worthy cause indeed and it was very sad to discover that the contents of the comfort bags stored at the police station had gone walkabout! I also went to Randburg’s St. Vincent’s School for the Deaf, where this Ann Club donated a sophisticated audio testing machine, for which they raised over R165,000 a year or two ago, and continue to actively support. Janet, Christina and Stef with St. Vincent’s audio testing machine. Swimming gala at St. Vincent’s.

These visits complete my tours of the Ann and IW Clubs for my year. I look back fondly and not without awe at the wonderful projects I have seen and the inspiring, dedicated people I have met. It has truly been a privilege to do this job of DG Ann under the banner of Peace through Service.

However, my year is far from over and I look forward to seeing many of you during the coming months up to the District Conference in June. I will be accompanying Martin to northern Botswana later this month and we have one more club in Mpumalanga to visit. There is also a great deal of work to be done for Discon, and among my other duties will be keeping you up to date on what is happening. I certainly won’t be sitting back on my laurels!

DON’T FORGET TO SUBMIT YOUR GO-GO AND PEACE CRANE PROJECTS!!

Warmest wishes to you all and thank you for your kind hospitality. Yours in Peace through Service

OLYMPIC VILLAGE PROJECT UPDATE: The current situation is that the organisation with whom we are dealing has until 31 January 2013 to clear the Olympic village. The goods are shipped first to the UK prisons where the sort- ing and packing will take place; hopefully during February. Then each container will be packed according to the se- lected wish lists – no preference as to the order thereof! Only then will we be advised which club’s container/s are ready for shipment; hopefully during March or April, dependent of cargo space availability.

The voyage can take anything up to three weeks as they also stop on the way to off load, so we are hopefully looking at late May or even only June for the first five containers (the test shipment) to arrive. All being well, customs (ITAC) and VAT (SARS) and clearance and arrival at the selected destination, we will then give the go ahead for shipments to commence that will continue until our wish list orders have been exhausted. The whole process is estimated will take the remainder of 2013 and a good portion of 2014.

The new requirement of estimating each club/project wish list size requirement may well delay the whole project still further so I hope that this can be done expeditiously, but not being the greatest of mathematicians I have my doubts! I hope that this explanation may assist with any enquiries that may arise from individual clubs.

Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar's democracy movement and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, delivered the keynote address at the Rotary Global Peace Forum held in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, 25-27 January.

She was honored with the Hawaii Peace Award for her longstanding pursuit of democracy through peaceful, nonviolent means. After 20 years of house arrest, Suu Kyi was released in November 2010, and last year was elected to Myanmar's parliament as a member of the pro-democracy opposition party.

“The kind of peace we want is very simple. We want permanent peace,” said Suu Kyi.

Citizens must take back power: Ramphele - 7 February 2013 - By Sam Mkokeli

Citizens need to grab their power back from unaccountable politicians so they can restore SA to the "country of our dreams”‚ academic Mamphela Ramphele said on Thursday (07/02/2013) morning. She was addressing the Benoni Aurora Rotary Club‚ while speculation intensifies that she will launch her own political party‚ with an announcement expected as early as next week. She said South African citizens faced poverty and despair as the dream of freedom faded. There was poverty under apartheid but South Africans could then "look forward to freedom and the promise of freedom”. The African National Congress (ANC) had conflated the state and party‚ she said‚ and party bosses were not accountable. A campaign would be launched soon to get a million signatures supporting a change from the current electoral system based on party lists. That had to be the main agenda. "We should be on a campaign for a million signatures. That has to be the first order of business to change the electoral system‚” she said. "You will soon be asked to sign‚” she said‚ answering a question from the audience about how this cam- paign would be started.© BDlive 2013.
