  • BBDO Picks the Winners!
BBDO Picks the Winners! Once a year the advertising agency of BBDO picks what they consider the breakout hits for the upcoming fall TV season. Based on their highly regarded opinion BBDO picks six probable winners (they call them swimmers) for the season: Roswell and Angel are listed as probable breakthrough hits on the WB. Joss Whedon, creator of the hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, combines supernatural adventure and dark humor in the next chapter of the Buffy saga, Angel. The centuries-old vampire (David Boreanaz), cursed with a conscience, has left the small town of Sunnydale and taken up residence in the City of Angels. Between pervasive evil and countless temptations lurking beneath the city’s glittery facade, Los Angeles proves to be the ideal address for a fallen vampire looking to save a few lost souls. With the help of Buffy’s Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), and a shadowy figure known as “The Whistler” (Glenn Quinn), Angel has one last chance to save his own soul by restoring hope to those impressionable young people locked in a losing battle with their own demons. It has been called the City of Dreams, and Angel has come to fight the nightmares. WB2 Tuesday 8-9pm following Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analogy: “Interview with the Vampire meets the WB” In the summer of 1947, residents of the tiny town of Roswell, New Mexico believed they witnessed the fiery crash of an alien spacecraft. The federal government maintains it never happened. Now, on the eve of the fifty-second anniversary, the town once again comes together to celebrate the historic event some call an ill- fated visit from the stars and others call a hoax.

The production is helmed by award-winning director Bart DeLorenzo (Geffen Playhouse Stage Kiss, Death of the Author; Founding Artistic Director Evidence Room). Time Alone is presented in association with The Latino Theatre Company. Time Alone traces the parallel journeys of a young man convicted of killing a gang rival, and a woman whose son - a police officer - is murdered in the line of duty. Both end up in places of extreme loneliness - a solitary confinement prison cell, and the silent house of the bereaved. As time itself seems to unravel, their tales both contrast and mirror each other, providing answers to each other's questions - until they find new doors to life. Playwright Alessandro Camon says, "Time Alone is born out of my ongoing period of research and volunteer work in the California juvenile justice and prison systems. I have been particularly interested in solitary confinement, which I studied in some depth.

  • The Surprise Drop: the Cloverfield Paradox, Unreal, and Evolving Patterns in Streaming Media Distribution and Reception
. Volume 16, Issue 2 November 2019 The Surprise Drop: The Cloverfield Paradox, UnREAL, and evolving patterns in streaming media distribution and reception Cory Barker, Bradley University, USA Abstract: This article examines the surprise release, a recent phenomenon where albums, films, and TV series are distributed to digital retailers and streaming platforms without notice. This approach to distribution arises out of the modern media ecosystem, where niche consumer groups access vast content libraries on personalized devices. Surprise ‘drops’ aim to redefine the ephemerality of media objects and shift consumers’ shortened attention spans into temporary moments of interest. Utilizing a cross-industry comparison between early surprise releases in music (namely from Beyoncé and U2) and more recent examples in film (Netflix’s The Cloverfield Paradox) and television (Hulu’s UnREAL season four), this article explores how media conglomerates exploit the technical process of digital distribution for discursive and cultural value. Critical analysis of promotional materials (trailers, interviews, and social media ephemera) reveals how surprise releases make distribution the centerpiece of multi-platform publicity campaigns that aim to leverage fan conversation into clicks, streams, and downloads. More than typical releases, surprise drops are framed as gifts, or ways for artists to give back to passionate fans. The contrast between industries also highlights how the function of surprise releases has evolved from artists’ expression of influence in music to an effort to redefine troubled projects in film and television. Keywords: Digital Distribution; Streaming Video; Marketing and Promotion; Gift Economy; Affective Cycles; Netflix; Hulu; Ephemeral Media; Surprise Releases The first trailer for The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), the third instalment in the J.J.
