Even with her introduction as a villain and history of mental instability that has caused her fight against her friends, the Scarlet Witch remains one of the most recognizable Marvel heroes. However her name suggests something else. Even in a post-Harry Potter world, witches are still often associated with evil and darkness. What makes the Scarlet Witch such an interesting character, is her ability to subvert the Western World’s associations with witches. But how does the Scarlet Witch subvert the western traditions of witches? This paper aims to explore how the Scarlet Witch subverts and reclaims the title of witch, by exploring her through some of her most important storylines, as well as comparing her with comic witches. Fighting villains, stopping the end of the world every day, even fighting each other. Especially fighting each other. Heroes fight each other more than they do villains right now. In fact, that’s pretty relevant to what you’re going to be doing. You’re in Earth-616 right now and the year is 2012. It’s not been too long since Scarlet Witch said No More Mutants and the Mutant race was almost wiped out. Cyclops and his two hundred or so mutants don’t have much hope left, outside one little source. Hope Summers, the Mutant Messiah, who may hold the key to restoring mutantkind. A key whose lock has just arrived. Both the X Men and the Avengers have received reports that the Phoenix Force has set a course for Earth, destroying all planets in it’s path. The X Men believe it is coming to revive the mutant race and will make Hope Summers into it’s host. The Avengers wish to take Hope off-world and into a secure location, in case Earth is destroyed. After graduation, I am going to pursue my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree. In addition to my love for animals, I also have a passion for cultures and international relations, which is where my love for Model UN comes from. All my life, I have had a love of superheroes in both the Marvel and DC Universes, so the inspiration for this committee has been with me since my childhood. From waking up early and staying up late to watch cartoons to reading comics and going to see any superhero related movies, I could never get enough. The various storylines were inspiring to me because they showed diversity, people prospering regardless of the boundaries set in front of them, and organizations of people working together to fight for the greater good of the world. I also admired the powerful and resilient characters who have shown me to never be afraid to fight for what I believe in and to never give up when things get tough. All the characters are unique in their powers and backgrounds and all face problems that are easily relatable to things that have happened in history and are currently going on in the world today. The problem crafted for this specific committee is centered around how two different organizations want to handle the Phoenix Force.
