As Music Editor for the Voice, he had come up with the Consumer Guide format back in 1969. His original format was twenty records, each accorded a single-paragraph review ending with a letter grade. His domain was rock and roll, but his taste and interests ranged widely, so his CGs regularly featured country, blues, folk, reggae, jazz, and later world (especially African), hip-hop, and electronica. Aside from two years off working for Newsday (when his Consumer Guide was published monthly in Creem), the Voice published his columns more-or-less monthly up to 2006, when new owners purged most of the Senior Editors. Since then he's continued writing in the format for a series of Webzines -- MSN Music, Medium, -

Debbie Harry Style Guide 2010.Qxd Layout 1
Debbie Harry is the front person of globally iconic rock band Blondie. They wrote great rock hooks and brilliant, ironic lyrics. They had the hippest clothes and the coolest hair. Debbie Harry went from the pages of Punk magazine to the cover of just about every mainstream publication on the newsstands. Debbie Harry's glamour, platinum blonde iconic look, keen wit, creative musical style, unique fashion sense was a major part of the focus that helped propel Blondie to mega star- dom. Section 1) Fonts - Page 2 - 3 Debbie Harry was raised in New Jersey, where as a teenager she said of herself "I used to dress in black every day and pretend to be tough" (quoted in the No- vember 12, 1977, issue of Juke Magazine). She spent most of her twenties working odd jobs, including, secretary, cocktail waitress and as a Playboy Bunny. She rubbed shoulders with the Warhol set at Max's Kansas City. Debbie’s first musical chance came when she recorded backup vocals on "The Wind in the Wil- lows" a folk band, who recorded only one album. Page 4 - 6 After hanging around punk's birth place C.B.G.B 's and performing briefly in The Stilettos, Debbie Harry started both a musical and personal relation- Section 2) Solo Albums - ship with Chris Stein in October 1973. Debbie got the idea to name their band Blondie from the Street noise of truck drivers and cabs. STANLEY CLARKE Forever to Return
May 2011 | No. 109 Your FREE Guide to the NYC Jazz Scene nycjazzrecord.com STANLEY CLARKE Forever to Return Warren Vaché • Roy Nathanson • Engine Records • Event Calendar They say 40 is the new 20. So what does that mean about 60? Rather than being close to retirement (if anyone even does that anymore), it means a jazz musician right in the middle of their prime. This month’s selection of sexagenarians proves just that. Bassist Stanley Clarke (On The Cover), veteran fusioneer and virtuoso funkster, isn’t technically 60 yet (born Jun. 30th, 1951) but he celebrates his New York@Night diamond birthday a little early with a week at Blue Note. Cornetist Warren Vaché 4 (Interview), keeper of the mainstream flame, passed the milestone this winter (born Feb. 21, 1951) and carries on marvelously with a weekend at The Kitano. Interview: Warren Vaché And saxist/vocalist/poet Roy Nathanson (Artist Feature) will usher in a new 6 by George Kanzler decade on his actual birthday (born May 17, 1951) at Jazz Standard. Flutist Sam Most (Encore) is quite a bit older than 60 but is still excelling on Artist Feature: Roy Nathanson the instrument he is widely credited as bringing to the frontline of jazz. And while 7 by Martin Longley saxophonist Clifford Jordan died almost two decades ago in his early 60s - a tragic loss for jazz - his music is remembered with an allstar band at Dizzy’s Club this On The Cover: Stanley Clarke month. 9 by Alex Henderson In chronologically-unrelated coverage, we feature the indie avant garde label Engine Records (Label Spotlight), two young musicians in our Listen Up! column Encore: Lest We Forget: we wish life and success long past 60 and a Megaphone from trombonist Wycliffe 10 Sam Most Clifford Jordan Gordon, extolling the rich jazz history of Harlem, just in time for this month’s by Andrew Vélez by Ken Waxman inaugural Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, a cooperative effort of the Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile, bringing a week of concerts, discussions and Megaphone VOXNews exhibitions to various locations uptown (May 9th-15th). -
