Debbie Harry Style Guide 2010.Qxd Layout 1 Debbie Harry is the front person of globally iconic rock band Blondie. They wrote great rock hooks and brilliant, ironic lyrics. They had the hippest clothes and the coolest hair. Debbie Harry went from the pages of Punk magazine to the cover of just about every mainstream publication on the newsstands. Debbie Harry's glamour, platinum blonde iconic look, keen wit, creative musical style, unique fashion sense was a major part of the focus that helped propel Blondie to mega star- dom. Section 1) Fonts - Page 2 - 3 Debbie Harry was raised in New Jersey, where as a teenager she said of herself "I used to dress in black every day and pretend to be tough" (quoted in the No- vember 12, 1977, issue of Juke Magazine). She spent most of her twenties working odd jobs, including, secretary, cocktail waitress and as a Playboy Bunny. She rubbed shoulders with the Warhol set at Max's Kansas City. Debbie’s first musical chance came when she recorded backup vocals on "The Wind in the Wil- lows" a folk band, who recorded only one album. Page 4 - 6 After hanging around punk's birth place C.B.G.B 's and performing briefly in The Stilettos, Debbie Harry started both a musical and personal relation- Section 2) Solo Albums - ship with Chris Stein in October 1973. Debbie got the idea to name their band Blondie from the Street noise of truck drivers and cabs. Blondie paid their dues their big break came late in 1977 when "Denis" reached the number two position in the British charts. Singing in a torn swimsuit and high heels, Debbie Harry would de- velop her own punk signature look and she quickly became the focus of great media attention. In the process she was the female pop icon of the era she always managed to balance the fame with the right amount of self-satire. Section 3) Single Covers- Page 4 - 6 "Heart of Glass" was Blondie's first world wide hit, going number one in both America and Britain. Blondie had several number one hits, in- cluding, "Heart of Glass", "Call Me", "The Tide is High", and "Rapture" (the first commercially successful song featuring rap). Debbie Harry had made Blondie one the most successful bands of the seventies and early eighties. Fame success and internal tensions caused the group to split in 1982. After Blondie, Debbie released a myriad of solo albums the first of which was Koo Koo. The cover features her famous collaboration with HR Section 4) Logos - Page 8 - 12 Giger. This album remains a favorite with her legions of fans. Debbie took four years off between the release of Koo Koo and her second solo effort Rockbird to add a different look to her repotoire, a nurse’s uniform . Debbie then released Rockbird and scored a number two hit in Britain and a number one hit in Australia, with the decidedly sexy "French Kissin'.” In 1989, Debbie Harry returned to the scene with the brilliantly seductive Def Dumb and Blonde. Now recording under the name Deborah Harry, the album was an eclectic blend of musical genres. The album signaled a return to Deborah’s fundamentals: diverse sounds, good Page 8 - 12 sense of humor, retro punk, avoiding retro sentimentally, but keeping it fun and enjoyable. The UK hit single was "I Want that Man", the Section 5) Necessary Evil Extras - album also charted well in the US, went platinum in Australia, and was followed by a world tour. In 1990 she recorded with Iggy Pop, (what was to become a cult classic) "Well Did You Evah" for the Red Hot and Blue album. The next release was in 1993 Debravation. A schizophrenic album, which one reviewer called a "jumble of genre exercises", still packs quite a punch. "I Can See Clearly" produced by Arthur Baker, has a seductive disco sound, and Deborah's voice is as soothing and charming as ever. "Rain", "Standing in my Way", and "Stability" are as good as anything she has ever produced. And then there is the Section 6) Photos - Page 18 -19 very experimental and twisted "Lip Service", which breaks into an Edgar Allen Poe poem in midstream. Deborah Harry is also an actor, appearing in "Union City" (1979), "Videodrome" (1983), "Hairspray" (1986), "Drop Dead Rock" (1995) and recently a starring role in "Heavy" (late 1995). She continues to pack a powerful punch as a performer, doing an ex- haustive round or tours with the Jazz Passengers, solo performances and charity benefits. In late 1996 Deborah Harry's vocal talents were featured on 9 tracks of the Jazz Passengers Album, "Individually Twisted". She also found time to appear with Page 20- 23 the band Groove Thing on the single "Command & Obey. Section 7) Design Concepts - Debbie’s recent releases include 1995’s No Talking Just Head recorded with the Talking Heads off shoot The Heads, for the Virtuosity soundtrack, a very catchy tongue in cheek track that shows her great sense of humor. Her most re- cent solo release in 2007 was the multi- collaboration project Necessary Evil which includes the single “Two Times Blue.” Debbie toured as part of Cyndi Lauper's True Colours tour to promote the release. Section 8) Contact Information - Page 25 Blondie’s 1999 release No Exit features the hit song “Maria” which gave the band the honor of being the only artist to have a #1 hit in the UK in each of 3 decades, further proving their relevance and staying power. 2003 brought the release of the album The Curse of Blondie. In 2006 her place in Rock history was solidified when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the midst of a world tour, Blondie will be releasing their brand new album, Panic of Girls in 2011. Art and music cross-fertilized with a vengeance following a stripped-down, hard-edged, anti- establishment ethos, with some artists plastering city walls with self-designed posters or spray painted monikers, while others commandeered abandoned buildings, turning vacant garages into makeshift theaters for Super 8 film screenings and raucous performances. Many artists found the experimental music scene more vital and conducive to their contrarian ideas than the handful of contemporary art galleries in the city. Artists in turn formed bands, performed in clubs and non- profit art galleries, and self-published their own records and zines while using public access cable channels as a venue for media experiments and cultural debates. Looking at Music: Side 2 is organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and succeeds Looking at Music (2008), an examination of the interaction between artists and musicians of the 1960s and early 1970s.

"Rip Her to Shreds": Women's Musk According to a Butch-Femme Aesthetic Judith A, Peraino "Rip Her to Shreds" is the tide of a song recorded in 1977 by the rock group Blondie; a song in which the female singer cat tily criticizes another woman. It begins with the female "speak er" addressing other members of her clique by calling attention to a woman who obviously stands outside the group. The lis tener likewise becomes a member of the clique, forced to par ticipate tacitly in the act of criticism. Every stanza of merciless defamation is articulated by a group of voices who shout a cho rus of agreement, enticing the listener to join the fray. (spoken! Hey, psf pst, here she comes !lOW.
