This beautiful city is practically totally built out of sillar, a kind of white volcanic stone. This is why Arequipa is called the white city. With its one million inhabitants, Arequipa is Peru´s second biggest city. The main square, the “Plaza de Armas” is the most beautiful of the country. The magnificent "Catedral" and the shopping malls are in colonial style. Climate It presents temperatures between 25°C and 10°C; with more than 300 days of sun. The humid season (from December to March) is characterized by the presence of clouds and little precipitations. In winter (June and July), it becomes slighty colder and the temperature descends until an average of 10ºC but the dry climate aid to feel the cold with smaller intensity. With a number record of 4000 hours of exhibition to the sun in the year, Arequipa justifies its nickname of “City of the eternal blue sky”. Ranging from the earliest cities in the Americas to Inca metropolises, millennia of urban human history along the Andes have left large and striking sites scattered across the country. But cities and monuments do not exist in solitude. Peru’s ancient sites are connected by a vast circulatory system of roads that connected every corner of the country, and thousands of square miles beyond its current borders. The Inca road system, or Qhapaq Ñan, is particularly famous; thousands of miles of trails linked the empire from modern- day Colombia to central Chile, crossing some of the world’s tallest mountain ranges and driest deserts. The Inca state recognized the importance of its road system, and dotted the trails with rest stops, granaries, and religious shrines. Inca roads even served directly religious purposes in pilgrimages and a system of ritual pathways that divided the empire (Ogburn 2010). This project contributes to scholarly knowledge about the Inca and Pre-Hispanic Andean civilizations by studying the roads which stitched together the Inca state.

  • Tracing a Major Crustal Domain Boundary Based on the Geochemistry of Minor Volcanic Centres in Southern Peru
7th International Symposium on Andean Geodynamics (ISAG 2008, Nice), Extended Abstracts: 298-301 Tracing a major crustal domain boundary based on the geochemistry of minor volcanic centres in southern Peru Mirian Mamani1, Gerhard Wörner2, & Jean-Claude Thouret3 1 Georg-August University, Goldschmidstr. 1, 37077 Göttingen, Germany ([email protected], [email protected]) 2 Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont Ferrand, France ([email protected]) KEYWORDS : minor volcanic centres, crust, tectonic erosion, Central Andes, isotopes Introduction Geochemical studies of Tertiary to Recent magmatism in the Central Volcanic Zone have mainly focused on large stratovolcanoes. This is because mafic minor volcanic centres and related flows that formed during a single eruption are relatively rare and occur in locally clusters (e.g. Andagua/Humbo fields in S. Peru, Delacour et al., 2007; Negrillar field in N. Chile, Deruelle 1982) or in the back arc region (Davidson and de Silva, 1992). These studies showed that the "monogenetic" lavas are high-K calc-alkaline and their major, trace, and rare elements, as well as Sr-, Nd- and Pb- isotopes data display a range comparable to those of the Central Volcanic Zone composite volcanoes (Delacour et al., 2007). It has been argued that the eruptive products of these minor centers bypass the large magma chamber systems below Andean stratovolcanoes and thus may represent magmas that were derived from a deeper level in the crust (Davidson and de Silva, 1992; Ruprecht and Wörner, 2007). This study represents a continuation of our work to understand the regional variation in erupted magma composition in the Central Andes (Mamani et al., 2008; Wörner et al., 1992).

  • Geosites and Geotouristic Attractions Proposed for the Project Geopark Colca and Volcanoes of Andagua, Peru
Geoheritage (2018) 10:707–729 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12371-018-0307-y ORIGINAL ARTICLE Geosites and Geotouristic Attractions Proposed for the Project Geopark Colca and Volcanoes of Andagua, Peru Andrzej Gałaś1 & Andrzej Paulo1 & Krzysztof Gaidzik2,3 & Bilberto Zavala4 & Tomasz Kalicki5 & Danitza Churata4 & Slávka Gałaś1 & Jersey Mariño4 Received: 15 July 2016 /Accepted: 18 May 2018 /Published online: 7 June 2018 # The Author(s) 2018 Abstract The Colca Canyon (Central Andes, Southern Peru), about 100 km long and 1–3 km deep, forms a magnificent cross section of the Earth’s crust giving insight into mutual relations between lithostratigraphical units, and allowing relatively easy interpretation of the fascinating geological history written in the rocky beds and relief. Current activity of tectonic processes related to the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American Plate exposed the geological heritage within study area. Well- developed tectonic structures present high scientific values. The volcanic landforms in the Valley of the Volcanoes and around the Colca Canyon include lava flows, scoria cones and small lava domes. They represent natural phenomena which gained recognition among tourists, scientists and local people. Studies performed by the Polish Scientific Expedition to Peru since 2003 recognized in area of Colca Canyon and Valley of the Volcanoes high geodiversity, potential for geoturism but also requirements for protectection. The idea of creating geopark gained recently the approval of regional and local authorities with support from the local National Geological Survey (INGEMMET). The Geopark Colca and Volcanoes of Andagua would strengthen the relatively poor system of the protected areas in the Arequipa department, increasing the touristic attractiveness and determine constraints for sustained regional development.

We wrote and published the original version of this guide to trekking Colca Canyon without a guide or a tour after our visit in May 2014. At the time, we found all of three blog posts to help us plan the trip (one of those is no longer live, as of this writing). So we wrote our own guide as a way to help all those who come after us. Since then, a number of other travelers trekked the Canyon on their own and wrote about it. Meanwhile, the article continues to be one of the most popular ones on our travel website Where Is Your Toothbrush?, pointing to its continued usefulness to hikers.

  • Frozen Mummies from Andean Mountaintop Shrines: Bioarchaeology and Ethnohistory of Inca Human Sacrifice
Hindawi Publishing Corporation BioMed Research International Volume 2015, Article ID 439428, 12 pages http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2015/439428 Review Article Frozen Mummies from Andean Mountaintop Shrines: Bioarchaeology and Ethnohistory of Inca Human Sacrifice Maria Constanza Ceruti Instituto de Investigaciones de Alta Montana,˜ Universidad Catolica´ de Salta, Campus Castanares,˜ 4400 Salta, Argentina Correspondence should be addressed to Maria Constanza Ceruti; [email protected] Received 22 December 2014; Accepted 5 April 2015 Academic Editor: Andreas G. Nerlich Copyright © 2015 Maria Constanza Ceruti. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. This study will focus on frozen mummies of sacrificial victims from mounts Llullaillaco (6739 m), Quehuar (6130 m), ElToro (6160 m), and the Aconcagua massif. These finds provide bioarchaeological data from mountaintop sites that has been recovered in scientifically controlled excavations in the northwest of Argentina, which was once part of the southern province of the Inca Empire.
