Aspects of Newtonianism in Rameau’s Génération harmonique (Thesis Format: Monograph) by Abigail Shupe Graduate Program in Music Theory A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies The University of Western Ontario London, Ontario, Canada © Abigail Shupe 2014 Abstract This dissertation studies the influence of Newtonianism as a cultural phenomenon on the theoretical writings of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Rameau’s Génération harmonique (1737) shows a change in his thinking from his earlier work that bears witness to the debates around Newtonian science in the scientific community. Scholars have discussed possible connections between Génération harmonique and Newton’s Opticks (1704) but none has studied this issue in detail. I argue that Rameau was influenced by Newtonianism rather than by Newton’s works, and that Rameau was not always aware of this influence. In order to situate Rameau’s work within the larger body of Newtonian works, I have compared it with Newton’s writings as well as other scientific texts of the early eighteenth century. First I provide a background on Newtonianism and its central figures, focusing especially on Voltaire’s Lettres philosophiques (1734) and the scandal surrounding its publication. I discuss Rameau’s use of experiments to demonstrate his concept of the corps sonore (the resonance of a vibrating body) and the connection between these experiments and other scientific works of the time. These experiments were based largely on the work of Dortous de Mairan (1668-1771) and can be understood as a part of Rameau’s attempt to gain status inside the Académie royale des sciences . Next I study Rameau’s use of certain terms that strongly resonated with Newtonian physics, especially as Voltaire had popularised it. Rameau’s use of these terms can be understood as his attempt to gain social status outside of the Académie by aligning his work with popular scientific works of the time. Finally, I consider the lack of Newtonian influence on Rameau’s works written after the 1730s. I interpret Rameau’s removal of Newtonian concepts and methods as a reflection of his larger goals to gain social status and to elevate music theory to the level of prestige accorded to the sciences. From his later works we can see that he used scientific methods and ideas ii opportunistically. Studying Rameau from this perspective situates his work within larger trends in Enlightenment science and demonstrates how music theory can be seen as a cultural product. Despite its long history, this story is nothing more than a commentators’ fiction that has become accepted wisdom not through sheer weight of evidence but through sheer frequency of repetition. In this paper we shall examine the reception of Leibniz’s doctrine of the best world in the eighteenth century in order to get a clearer understanding of what its fate really was. As we shall see, while Leibniz’s doctrine did win a good number of adherents in the 1720s and 1730s, especially in Germany, support for it had largely dried up by the mid-1740s; moreover, while opponents of Leibniz’s doctrine were few and far between in the 1710s and 1720s, they became increasing vocal in the 1730s and afterwards, between them producing an array of objections that served to make Leibnizian optimism both philosophically and theologically toxic years before the Lisbon earthquake struck.     The Philhellenic Horizon: Homeric Prolegomena to the Greek War of Independence Constanze Güthenke Based on what Armstrong and Dué, in the invitation to this conference, have termed the Wolfian paradigm of Homeric research and its intersection with the preoccupations of the Romantic period (ballads; nature; language; nation; nostalgia; modernity), this paper examines the role of Homer within the horizon of European Philhellenism (in the sense of a partisan position favorable towards Modern Greece), as much as the impetus of this Philhellenism on approaches to Homer. I will first focus on the case of Wilhelm Müller, who achieved prominence in his own time mainly for his several volumes of Griechenlieder, written in support of the Greek War of Independence. In a second part, I want to speculate about the fate of Homeric knowledge and its use in post-independence Greece, whose writers were very highly aware of the Homeric features of the Western philhellenic endeavor. The overarching research framework behind this paper is the triangle between antiquity, the modern West and modern Greece, and its resulting tensions. The representation of modern Greece by way of a nature discourse is one example; the position of Greece vis-à-vis Europe, trying to reformulate conceptually the refractions and (mis-)representations arising from mutual perception, is another. This is also a question of comparativism, which is currently strongly exercising the Humanities again. Comparative literature is discussing again the notion of “world literature” and its imbalanced axes (see, e.g., Prendergast 2004), while history and the social sciences are continuously looking for new concepts of exchange and interplay as a heuristic method.

Two years later Newton sent Book I of The Mathematical Principals of Natural Philosophy (Principia).     History in the Making, volume 8, 2021 Frederick the Great’s Sexuality – New Avenues of Approach JACKSON SHOOBERT Frederick the Great’s sexual orientation provides an interesting case study; one that dissects the nature of power, temporality, and sexuality within the confines of elite Prussian eighteenth- century society. Analysis of this subject is significantly complicated by a deep web of adolescent repression which culminated in a level of prudence that still leaves modern scholars without a conclusive definition of Frederick’s sexuality.1 The sexuality of any human forms an important portion of their personality. Ignoring this facet for the sake of a convenient narrative is detrimental to understanding historical characters and the decisions they make.2 Examining how Frederick expressed his sexuality and the inferences this renders about his character will generate a more nuanced understanding without being confined in a broad categorisation as a homosexual. For Frederick, this aspect has been neglected in no small part due to methods he undertook to hide portions of his nature from contemporaries and his legacy. A thorough investigation of the sexuality of Frederick the Great and its interrelations with his personality is therefore long overdue. Frederick the Great, one of the most eminent men of his time, was not an obviously heterosexual man. His sexuality, which has only truly become a legitimate subject for inquiry within the last 60 years, has always been an integral component of his character, permeating from his adolescence unto his death. Despite ground-breaking works by German and Anglo authors in the last decade, the research has barely scraped the surface of what can be learned from Frederick and his sexuality.

    Pre-Darwinian thinking, the voyage of the Beagle, and the Origin of Species How did life originate? What is responsible for the spectacular diversity that we see now? These are questions that have occupied numerous people for all of recorded history. Indeed, many independent mythological traditions have stories that discuss origins, and some of those are rather creative. For example, in Norse mythology the world was created out of the body of a frost giant! Some early attempts at scientific or philosophical discussion of life were apparent in Greece. For example, Thales (the earliest of the identified Greek philosophers) argued that everything stemmed ultimately from water. He therefore had a somewhat vague idea that descent with modification was possible, since things had to diversify from a common origin. Aristotle suggested that in every thing is a desire to move from lower to higher forms, and ultimately to the divine. Anaximander might have come closest to our modern conception: he proposed that humans originated from other animals, based on the observation that babies need care for such a long time that if the first humans had started like that, they would not have survived. Against this, however, is the observation that in nature, over human-scale observation times, very little seems to change about life as we can see it with our unaided eyes. Sure, the offspring of an individual animal aren’t identical to it, but puppies grow up to be dogs, not cats. Even animals that have very short generational times appear not to change sub- stantially: one fruit fly is as good as another.

Copyright c Helge Kragh, 2012 1 Newtonianism in the Scandinavian Countries, 1690-1790 HELGE KRAGH 1 Introduction In the present context, the Scandinavian countries refer to two national or administrative units, the one being Denmark and the other Sweden. In the period here considered, largely the century from 1690 to 1790, ‘Denmark’ means really Denmark-Norway, for until 1814 Norway was part of the double monarchy ruled by the king and his government in Copenhagen. It should also be kept in mind that parts of what is today Germany, namely Schleswig-Holstein, belonged to the kingdom. However, as far as language and culture were concerned, these parts of southern Denmark were more German than Danish, and they played no important role in the scientific life of the kingdom. Sweden covered a much larger geographical area than it does today. The country had expanded greatly during the seventeenth century, when not only Finland but also parts of the Baltic area and northern Germany came under Swedish rule. About 1720, after the Great Northern War, Sweden lost most of its possessions, but the major part of Finland remained as part of the country until Centre for Science Studies, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark.
