Med., 1986, 148 (1), 73-78 Five cases of poisoning by indigenous mushroom Hikageshibiretake (Psilocybe argentipes) are reported. As this mushroom contains psilocybin, in general, clinical features were similar to those seen by pure psilocybin. Acute toxic stuporous state with com- plete amnesia in the culminating period occurred in one case, psychedelic state with dreamy consciousness in one case and psychotic adverse reactions with vivid visual hallucinations with consciousness in three cases. There were accompanied with anxiety and panic reactions to subjective experiences. Though these toxic effects were usually short-lived, for management of such patients it is important to recognize that horrible emotional reactions and other harmful behavioral problems can also occur. hallucinogenic mushroom ; psilocybin ; toxic psychosis ; Psilocybe argentipes ; Hikageshibiretake The Aztecs and neighbouring tribes used not only peyotl (Lophophora williamsi) which contains mescaline, but also "sacred mushrooms" called teonanacatl in their religious cult since antiquity. In 1955 R. Gordon Wasson and his wife (Wasson 1957, 1959) rediscovered the mushroom cult in Southern Mexico and brought the specimens of mushroom to Roger Heim, well-known mycologist in Paris. Heim classified the mushrooms as Psilocybe mexicana Heim. In 1958 Hofmann, a chemist at the Sandoz Lab., isolated from Psilocybe mexicana Heim hallucinogenic psilocybin and psilocin as active principles. -

Allen INTRODUCTION Guzman (1990:98), noted authority on the entheogenic mushrooms of Mesoamerica wrote that "according to Wasson, nine indian tribes in Mexico use sacred mushrooms or did in the past. Five of these--the Mazatec, Mixtec, Mixe, Chatino and Zapotec indians--are located in the state of Oaxaca. Four others dwell elsewhere;[one tribe] the Nahuatl [are found], from the center of M~xico to the Pacific in Colima and Chiapas and to the Gulf of M~xico in Veracruz. Of these, the Mazahuan, Otomi and Tarascan indians apparently no longer use the sacred mushrooms, having abandoned them at some point in their forgotten past." "Eruption of the earth", "mushroom of reason", "children of the water", "our masters, the mushrooms of the world", "the most holy of lords", "little ones that spring forth", "mushrooms of the saints", and "los senors (the lords, used by Mesoamericans)", are but a few of the many endearing epithets used to describe the adoration, respect, and esteem many Mesoamericans hold when expressing their love for the sacred mushrooms. Seven hundred eighteen names related to Psilocybe were found reportcd in the bibliography, of which only 227 are accepted taxa in P;ilqcybe. Abstract: Mushroom poisoning has always been a threat to human health. There are a large number of reports about ingestion of poisonous mushrooms every year around the world. It attracts the attention of researchers, especially in the aspects of toxin composition, toxic mechanism and toxin application in poisonous mushroom. Inocybe is a large genus of mushrooms and contains toxic substances including muscarine, psilocybin, psilocin, aeruginascin, lectins and baeocystin. In order to prevent and remedy mushroom poisoning, it is significant to clarify the toxic effects and mechanisms of these bioactive substances. -
Psychotropic Mushrooms and the Alteration of Consciousness, I: the Ascent of Psilocybian Mushroom Consciousness

AL TERE-O STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS, Vol. 3(1),1977-78 PSYCHOTROPIC MUSHROOMS AND THE ALTERATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS, I: THE ASCENT OF PSILOCYBIAN MUSHROOM CONSCIOUSNESS STEVEN HAYDEN POLLOCK University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio ABSTRACT Psilocybian mushroom consciousness is considered initially from a historical perspective in Mesoamerica, which includes a resume of events leading to the discovery of modern Mexican sacred mushroom rites. The subsequent course of psychotropic mushroom use in Mexico is documented and its spread to other areas of Latin America described. Attention is then focused on Australia, where magic fungus ingestion reached epidemic proportions and incited strong governmental attempts to curb the phenomenon. The surge of psilocybian mushroom awareness in Canada and the United States is explored along with the ecological relationship between these fungi and man.Finally, the recent impact of psilocybian mushrooms on mycophobia is noted. Prelude This article is the first of a series that will focus on psychotropic mushrooms as they relate to the alteration of consciousness. Future communications will be directed to such aspects as a consideration of the psychoactive Amanitas with their intriguing but relatively little studied properties and an in depth look at psilocybian psychopharmacognosy. Psilocybian mushrooms are sporophores of fungi which biosynthesize the psychopharmacologically active compound psilocin (4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine). Psilocin is usually stored in the mushrooms as the phosphate derivative psilocybin (4-phos- phoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine), and indeed "psilocybin" is the vernacular name by which most people know these mushrooms. But let's reflect way back, aeons ago, to some remote period in man's evolutionary history. -

These mushrooms represent a growing problem regarding hallucinogenic drug abuse. Despite its experimental medical use in the 1960s, only very few pharmacological data about psilocybin were known until recently. Because of its still growing capacity for abuse and the widely dispersed data this review presents all the available pharmacological data about psilocybin.
