OUR VIEW Heating tips could prevent house fires Last weekend’s thunderstorms ushered in the season’s first cold snap just in time for the holiday season. This week’s nighttime lows hovered in the upper 20s and lower 30s, prompting Marion County residents to turn on their heaters or light the fireplace. Unfortunately, cold snaps increase the likelihood for house fires because of improper maintenance and use of heating devices. Below are a few tips to help you prevent tragedy from occurring at your home. Never use ovens, ranges and grills as a primary or supplementary heating device. They may overheat and cause a fire, and they can produce deadly fumes. Install carbon monoxide detectors in every home to warn of deadly gas levels. Keep all heating devices at least 36 inches away from other objects, such as combustible walls and furniture. Never fill kerosene heaters while hot and inside your home. Avoid overfilling the unit as cold fuel may expand in the tank as it warms up. When using a space heater, never use an extension cord, never hang COMMENTARY items to dry above the heater and never leave the space heater unattended. Keep candles at least one foot away from anything that burns, especially highly flammable objects like Christmas trees, curtains and papers. Make an escape plan that shows two ways out of every room and have Vaccine resisters endanger others everyone practice the plan before an emergency strikes. Last Friday night’s South State title game in Bassfield that pitted the East Marion Eagles against the home Yellowjackets was by far one of the best, if not the best, high school football games I have witnessed. Both teams were well-pre- pared for each other as they played tough-as-nails defense and occasionally slipped past each other for some big-time plays. Fortunately, our very own East Marion team of Columbia pulled off an amaz- ing victory to earn a chance to capture the Class 2A state title Friday afternoon in Jackson. The Eagles will take on anoth- er strong team in West Bolivar at 3 p.m. Over the past three months, I, along with many faithful fans, have witnessed great things from East Marion’s football team. The coaching staff should be commended for a job well done not only on the field, but off the field as well. The players maintain composure on the field and sidelines, and rarely let emo- tions get the best of them. Winning helps, but even win- ners can show out on and off the field. For the Eagles, they have been humble in their wins, and much of that is to the credit of head coach Anthony Dillon and his staff. During the middle of the summer, I suspected something was wrong with my trusty old police car. I had owned a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor for several years. In fact, I’d driven it for more than 100,000 miles myself in addition to the mileage that was already on it. I knew the car well. I could tell when it needed something. This time, the neglect was fatal for the car. I had noticed the oil pressure surging on the gauge. It was at a busy time, and I kept telling myself “I’ll get it next week.” Next week never came. One Saturday afternoon as I headed to cover an accident I felt power surges in my car. As I headed out U.S. Hwy. 98, I watched my oil pressure gauge flat line. Before I could even slow down, I heard the sound of hot pistons striking metal. “Tat…tat…tat…BOOOOOM!” That was the sound my engine made. When tires are balanced, small lead weights are attached to the wheels to limit vibration of the tire and wheels as they turn. Tires and wheels should be balanced when the tires are rotated (normally every 6,000 miles), after putting on new tires, after fixing a , and any other time a tire is removed from its rim.
