Introduction

Every motorist is familiar with the concept of car styling. At the moment, car styling services are very popular - they can ‘remake’ a car taking into account their personal requests. Improvements can be made by enhancing the external appearance of the car along with its technical characteristics. The styling process is interesting and exciting as it can include quite complex changes in the design of the engine, suspension, body and many other features. Annually, car factories produce tens of thousands of cars and styling always plays an important part, making each car individual. The simplest and most common type of customisation is the exterior trim of the vehicle. There are a huge amount of car accessories; stickers, attachments, moldings, tinting, plastic hinges, spoilers, body kit, backlighting, chrome parts etc. One type of styling is chip-tuning, which modifies the electronic control unit (ECU) of the car. This upgrade allows you to achieve superior performance without any major alterations.

I. EXTERNAL CUSTOMISATION

Aerodynamic body kits

Aerodynamic body kits are made up of linings on the body to improve the appearance and aerodynamic qualities of the car. They work by reducing drag and improving the downforce of the car - which can prevent loss of control on the road. The car becomes more stable at corners, reducing the risk of accidents and making it more efficient. It also becomes faster as it uses less fuel. Redirection of air-flow helps to cool the engine so its durability will increase because overheating affects the wear of parts. Attractive aerodynamic body kits improve the appearance of the car, making it look stylish and sporty. The effect of styling is more noticeable at speeds above 70mph, when turbulent air currents are intensively formed around the vehicle. Body kits will not only drastically improve the appearance of your car and increase aerodynamics, but will turn even the most common type of car into a real masterpiece. Mud Screens

Most vehicles have mud screens. These ‘aprons’ provide protection for the bottom and body of your car from dirt, dust, gravel, water and other small particles. Their installation is simple, taking no more than 15 minutes and don’t require special tools. Enhance the safety of your vehicle with mud screens.

You may be surprised at the amount of options available when thinking about buying mud screens – they are divided into universal and individual:

• The first can be installed on any car, they are usually cheaper, but do not have any special aesthetics and cannot fully cope with their tasks due to a mismatch of the car's features.

Protective body kits

Nearly all 4x4s have designs that protect the bumper. These accessories have different names, in the UK they’re called Bull Bars and in Germany - Front Schutz Bugel. They are designated as ‘additional protective devices over the front bumper’ and they are often referred to as body kits, kangurins or yoke. Similar accessories are installed on the back of the car and in this case they can be called rear bumper protection, rear kangurin or body kits. Metal arcs in the form of iron pipes, are installed on the front and rear of the car over the bumpers. There are no typical forms of gratings and requirements for kangurins, they can have different diameters, size and shape, ranging from 40-101mm. The front kangurins can completely cover the bonnet, headlights and wings but can only protect the bumper and the grille, or only the lower part of the

12 bumper. Rear protection usually only covers the bumper. Here are some of the most common options:

The front bumper protection can be one of the following: • A short tube of small diameter (no more than 42mm) running along the bottom edge of the skirt.

• High protection, reaching to the hood, sometimes has several transverse pipes and brackets for installing fog lamps.

• Low protection, reaching or missing up to the upper edge of the bumper, sometimes with a lower protection (‘shark’).

• A ‘wave’, where the pipe has an upward or downward bend. This design is usually used as it doesn’t cover the number plate or hitch.

Often, these products are made of stainless steel, but different combinations can be used, for example:

• Front protection, which has a steel frame in a shell of polyurethane with inserts of polished aluminum or stainless steel. • Rear protection made of aluminum and usually selected in conjunction with similar thresholds. • Rear protection in polished stainless steel with plastic end caps, sometimes with plastic tread.

Rear Bumper Diffusers

Diffusers began to be installed on racing cars back in the 1980s - the first one appearing on Formula One cars. They were later used on rally cars and cars prepared for drift. Today, the diffuser can be seen on a production car, as one of the elements of customisation. It is attached to the rear of the car, usually under the rear bumper. Diffusers are now made of carbon - the most popular material in styling. The main function of the diffuser is to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the machine. The diffuser has ‘ribs’ (usually three or four), so that the airflow under the car's bottom is redistributed, creating additional pressure and increasing the downforce of the vehicle. In Formula One cars, the design of the diffuser means that in addition to air flows, this body kit uses exhaust gases to reduce the lift of the rear of the car, creating a grounding effect so when the body kit reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the car it has a positive effect on its dynamic qualities.

By design, the diffusers installed on Formula One cars and cars prepared for drift are different. Drift cars, due to the specifics of the competition, are forced to constantly

16 brake, making the brake pads and disks extremely hot. A diffuser with special sections directs air flows to the pads and suits which cools them down.

Here are the advantages of the diffuser: • An increase in the vehicle's clamping force • A reduction in the lift of the rear of the vehicle • Cooling brake pads and discs for cars participating in drift competitions. There are no real disadvantages to the diffuser.

Front and rear bumper covers

Front and rear bumper covers are a functional element of the external styling for the car. They protect the bottom of the bumper, which usually suffers from scratches, chips, cracks and other damage. The covers are designed by taking into account the individual characteristics of the car, ensuring a perfect fit to the working surface. Many car owners prefer to install a shiny chrome-plated lining with a metallic tint, which allows you to transform the car, giving it originality as well as credibility. The set of linings for the front and rear bumpers include several elements made of stainless steel with a layer of chromium applied. This will increase the hardness and durability of the material whilst also preventing corrosion of parts in a hostile external environment. The overlays are installed independently on the 3M double-sided adhesive tape that is applied to the back of the parts. Before installation, it is necessary to degrease the car's surface then separate the protective film from the tape, fasten the accessory to the intended place and press it down for several minutes. Full adhesion of the lining to the surface occurs after two days, therefore during this period it is not recommended to expose the vehicle to high pressure equipment used in car washing.

For the front of the car there is another protective and decorative accessory - a lining on the grille. As a rule, such products are made of chrome-plated steel and are an additional protection for the radiator. But mostly, they are installed for decorative purposes and become an important feature in the design of the exterior of the car.

Thresholds and overlays

One of the common accessories for SUVs are additional thresholds, which are made from various materials (most often steel and aluminum) and can have a variety of configurations, performing three functions:

• They are able to protect the body with a slight impact from the side.

• They’re practical for SUVs as thresholds can be very useful as a ‘step’, making it more convenient to land in the car or load things into the boot box.

• They’re decorative as the thresholds complement the appearance of the car and give it a more aggressive look, characteristic of SUVs.

These accessories can completely replace the standard thresholds or complement them, with the most common type - a steel pipe equipped with end caps from different materials (plastic, stainless steel, polished or welded).

• A steel pipe with a sheet (steel or aluminum) molded in the form of an anti-slip profile and serving as a full support.

• Aluminum profile of different lengths, sometimes covered with rubber-plastic to prevent slipping and decorated with polished stainless steel and plastic plugs.

Sometimes car owners do not want to change the regular thresholds and consider it inappropriate to install additional external models. In this case manufacturers offer special covers (threshold protection) that can be made of different materials:

• Plastic, which is the cheapest and least durable option.

The main function of the lining is to protect the regular thresholds from mechanical influences (pebbles, heels and accidental shocks), premature wear and exposure to dirt and moisture. In addition, these elements improve the appearance of the car. Depending on which of the two functions prevail, either reliable steel or a beautiful aluminum or plastic model are viable options.

Bonnet deflector

The bonnet deflector is mounted on the front of the bonnet, replicating its shape. The main purpose of this product is to protect the area it covers, as well as the ‘aerodynamic shadow’ (the area immediately behind it). Dangers to the car bonnet can include the risk of impact by small stones and sand.

The so-called ‘sandblasting effect’ can lead to paint damage and the formation of scratches and chips because that part of the hood that is exposed to similar impacts the drivers seek to protect with this accessory. The bumper is equipped with all the necessary fasteners, developed by specialist manufacturing companies specifically for the make and model of car. For installation, only a crosshead screwdriver is needed. During installation the hood deflector should be fixed at a point where it does not interfere with the flow of water. The bonnet deflector should not retain moisture, dirt and fine sand, which are easily removed by the water jet during car washing. More details about the installation for each specific car can be found in the manual.

Window deflectors

The most common type of deflectors are installed on windows, mainly on side windows. Depending on the location, these deflectors have their own functions and their own names. Products installed on the side windows are called ‘door deflectors’ or ‘wind- blasters’.

• To protect the windows from falling stones and from other flying debris.

• To reduce the build-up of dirt on windows, ensuring better visibility;

• To provide natural air flow and circulation, preventing fogging and vaporisation at high humidity. By using deflectors, you can safely open the window even in rain or snow.

Deflectors installed on the rear window are referred to as ‘deflectors clean glass’ because they create an airflow which blows dust from the glass that comes from under the wheels. This ensures better visibility and ensures a safer driving experience. In some cases, they can protect additional stop lamps from sun glare.

The deflector of the rear window minimises the ingress of dirt onto the glass, changing the direction of the flow of the incoming air. Cars that have additional brake lights at the top of the tailgate, have the added advantage of the spoiler shading them, protecting them from glare and making them more visible on the road.

The Rialto offers a large selection of rear deflectors, which differ in material - carbon, polycarbonate, acrylic plastic, and shape. Their thickness can vary from 2 to 5mm and the shade can be chosen for the colour of the body, but usually black spoilers are popular. Some models are equipped with built-in additional stoplights in white or red. When choosing spoilers of any type, it is important to buy only those models that are suitable for the car to which they are to be installed. This ensures that the deflector can easily be fixed in place and cope with its functions. In addition, like all deflectors, the rear spoilers also perform a purely decorative function, making the car more ‘sporty’. With their help you can add a little aggressiveness or emphasise the individuality in the appearance of the car.

This accessory performs a number of functions:

• It reduces turbulence in the cabin with an open hatch and improves ventilation.

• It reduces noise levels.

• Due to its streamlined form, the counter-flow of air is directed upwards, and along with it - dust and dirt, which otherwise would fall into the cabin.

• The aerodynamic shadow above the hatch allows you to open it even in rain.

Deflectors are a necessity for vehicles with a sliding type hatch because they’re convenient for allowing the use of an ‘upper boot’. However, because of the design features it does not protect the interior from wind, dust and precipitation. Deflectors come in different colours but are usually black or gray. Some models reflect light, others are limitedly transparent. The thickness of the product varies from 2 to 5mm. The hatch deflectors can be universal - suitable for any car, or individual to each model of car. If the design of your vehicle needs a regular deflector, it is better to choose the original model.

Buying this accessory, you need to make sure that the kit contains installation instructions and all the elements provided in it. These can be clips, sealing gums, 3M adhesive tape, (which is already pasted on the deflector). It is better if the product is wrapped with shrink film that will protect it from damage during transportation.

Hitch for the boot

There are different names for this device – ‘Hitch for the boot’, ‘CargoBox’ or ‘TowBox’

Installed box

This additional equipment for the car is a special stand-alone technical device, attached to the tow bar and intended for the transport of various goods. With its help you can carry oversized things like bicycles, pushchairs, sleds, wheelchairs, various types of luggage and even pets.

The hitch is based on a cargo platform, which is attached to the tow bar, and can be equipped with additional devices such as boxes, baskets or structures for fixing bicycles. You can buy all of the elements separately but the main thing is that they fit together and you can immediately purchase a complex, for example, a platform + box or platform + basket. A boot of this type is attached to the ball of the tow bar and it is perfectly suited for the bulk of the currently used tow bar models. However, due to some installation features, the trunk can be uneven, so if you install the tow bar specifically for the boot, it is advisable to check which model is best.

The process of installing the boot takes seconds and does not require any skills or help from another person. Most models have folding wheels, which provide an even greater convenience when installing the box on the ball of the tow bar. To ensure protection from theft, the trunks are provided with a lock that fixes the connection to the tow bar, preventing it from being removed. It is worth noting that TowBox luggage boots have

31 three variants of the design position: the first allows the use of a locking mechanism and is recommended for parking; the second provides a minimum distance to the car and is used while driving; the third one, which is hinged, makes gaining access to the luggage compartment of the car easy.

The boot system is equipped with electrical wiring that has an adapter compatible with European standards. Behind the boot are all the necessary optics, including fog lights. The luggage compartment is protected from a counter flow of air, so aerodynamic noise and fuel consumption are kept at a minimum. In addition, it does not increase the height of the car. When buying a hitch for the boot, car owners compare it with a trailer as they have some similarities as well as differences:

• The boot has a smaller capacity. You can’t put large objects in the boot while larger objects can be transported in the trailer.

• The boot does not require registration and inspection.

•The boot does not affect the management of the vehicle (except, perhaps, the parking process), whereas driving a car that tows a trailer requires some special skills;

• The boot does not affect the speed of the vehicle, unlike the trailer.

Car boxes are very convenient for transporting cargo, making them a necessity for any car owner.

There are a wide variety of car boxes available and the dimensions and capacity of the boxes can vary. The capacity of most boxes can be anywhere from 370-620l, the length is usually from 135-232cm. The width is from 65-95cm and the carrying capacity is from 50-100 kg. Extended models can be positioned as boxes for skis, but they can also be used for other cargo. The boxes are usually made from plastic and higher end products are made from frost-resistant plastic. This material tolerates colder climates far better and does not become excessively brittle under the influence of low temperatures or precipitation. There are some key differences with some boxes, for example, the opening mechanism. Some boxes allow you to open the lid from either side - the location of the fasteners is more convenient if they are inside the box. There are also different colours, but they are usually black, gray or silver.

The boxes are divided into economy and premium types. Each manufacturer uses its own criteria for the classification of its products. For example, Mont Blanc boxes have the following differences:

• Products in the premium category have gas stops and economical models use metal or plastic levers to open and close the lid.

• Premium boxes have a central locking system that does not allow you to remove the key if the lock is not open.

• Economy boxes are fixed with a U-shaped bracket and are designed only for steel trunk racks. Premium boxes are suitable for any type of luggage compartment and are equipped with the most convenient fastening system that eases their installation.

Headlamps protection

There are several different styles and designs of protection headlights, allowing a greater choice for consumers.

The materials used for the headlights include; thermoformed plastic, organic glass and polycarbonate and the thickness is usually 3mm. Vacuum molding is used for the production of headlights. Headlamp covers have different degrees of transparency and their colour is heterogeneous so they can be completely transparent except for the black and silver border along the edge of the headlight. They can also have transparent areas where part of the enclosed space is darkened, or have additional toned overlays. This design means that the darkened areas do not interfere with the light of the optics. Before buying headlamp protection the main thing is to find a model that is compatible with your car. Even if they are suitable for a car that is similar to the exterior of yours - the accessories designed for it may not completely match the features of the body or headlights of your vehicle, which won’t fit properly.

In addition, when you are buying headlamp protection it is important to make sure that it includes all the necessary elements. Brand models are normally equipped with installation instructions. In addition to the protection itself, plastic brackets and silicone dampers that line in-between the headlamp and the protection, and shrink film that protects the products from damage during transportation.

Crankcase protection

The protection of the engine compartment and transmission elements (‘crankcase protection’) is widely represented on the market today, manufacturers are making these products from various materials – both traditional and modern, but the traditional metal models that have been in use for nearly 10 years are more popular. Metal crankcase protection can be made of steel (including stainless), aluminum and titanium. In this case, each type of metal crankcase protection has its advantages and disadvantages. Metal crankcase protection is predominately made from steel because of the affordability and quality it offers.

To protect the crankcase GRP, carbon fibre (carbon) and kevlar (a material based on para-aramid fibre) are used. These products have a lot of advantages, but the complexity of production of composite materials makes them more expensive. Fibreglass alternatives are very popular as they are often cheaper than other materials.

There are basic criteria for choosing the protection of the crankcase:

Stiffness and strength

For cars used in urban conditions, the rigidity of protection from a steel sheet 2mm thick is sufficient and for machines used in difficult conditions, we offer a steel protection 3mm. To achieve similar rigidity, aluminum protection is made 5mm thick. Products made of composite materials generally have a thickness of 5mm and have approximately the same level of rigidity and strength as steel (it should be noted that steel beats fibreglass in terms of strength).

Elasticity

Metal protection during impact becomes deformed. For steel products from a sheet thickness of 2mm, this is irrelevant, since they can easily be straightened but for 3mm protection it becomes more difficult. In order to carry out these repairs it is necessary to remove the protection, and this is a laborious process. Products made from composite materials are elastic and do not deform at standard impacts - restoring its shape.

The weight

As a rule, steel protection with a thickness of 2mm weighs between 8-12kg, but the weight of the metal protection can reach up to 15kg. Composite materials make it possible to create a fairly easy protection (up to 4kg), while the lower weight in this group of products has a protection from carbon and the larger, from fibreglass.

Resistance to aggressive influences

Steel protection under the influence of moisture becomes corroded and a similar problem can be seen in aluminum protection at the attachment points as it is deprived of stainless steel products and expensive titanium.
