Main activity instructions: ‘Rhythm and Vines Festival’

Task 1 Using Google Earth – a) Type ‘Waiohika Estate Vineyard, Gisborne’ into the ‘fly to’ search box. When it gets there, click on the ‘Rhythm and Vines’ location label, on the map and a picture will appear. Describe what you can see in the image. b) Looking at this area on the map, would you describe it as densely or sparsely populated? c) Zoom right into the site and describe the land-use you can see. d) Describe the surrounding landscape – relief (is it flat or hilly?) Is it attractive? Task 2 Using Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps, type ‘Gisborne’ into the search box and zoom in and out of the ‘terrain’ maps to answer the following questions: a) Describe the location of Gisborne in relation to its physical geography. b) Name the river which enters the sea at Gisborne. c) Type ‘Waiohike Estate Vineyard, Gisborne’ into the search box. Zoom into the vineyard site and describe the relief of the site and its backdrop. d) What features are labelled which suggest that this is a scenic location? e) Right click on the map and select ‘directions to here’. Type ‘Gisborne airport’ into the ‘from’ (A) box and ‘Rhythm and Vines festival’ into the ‘to’ (B) box and then enter. How far is the festival site from the airport?

‘Southside Festival’ Neuhausen Ob Eck, Germany

Task 1 Using Google Earth – a) Type ‘Neuhausen Ob Eck’ into the ‘fly to’ search box. Describe the approximate size of the settlement. b) Would you describe the overall region as densely or sparsely populated? c) Describe the land-use in the area. d) Describe the landscape – relief (flat or hilly?) Is it attractive? e) Find the ‘Southside Festival’ label to the north-west of the settlement and zoom into the site itself. Describe what you can see. Task 2 Using Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps, type ‘Southside Festival, Neuhausen Ob Eck’ into the search box and zoom in and out of the ‘terrain’ maps to answer the following questions: a) In which compass direction is the festival from the settlement of Neuhausen Ob Eck? b) Approximately how far is it from Neuhausen Ob Eck? (Use the scale at the bottom.) c) What is the number of the nearest main road? d) There is a train station at Tuttlingen and a shuttle bus picks people up to take them to the festival site. Find out how far away this is and how long the journey on the bus will take. To do this, right click on the map and select ‘directions to here’. Type in ‘Tuttlingen’ in the ‘from’ box (A) and ‘Southside festival’ in the ‘to’ box (B), and then enter.

Task 1 Using Google Earth – a) Type ‘Hip Hop KEMP, Hradec Kralove’ into the ‘fly to’ search box. Describe the overall land-use of the area. b) Are the settlements around the Hip Hop Kemp site largely big or small? c) Click on the ‘Hip Hop KEMP ‘05’ label and a photograph will appear. Describe the landscape you can see in the image – is it flat or hilly? What other natural feature can you see in the image? Does it look densely or sparsely populated? (Look for permanent houses not tents!) Task 2 Using Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps, type ‘Hip Hop KEMP 05, Hradec Kralove’ into the search box and zoom in and out of the ‘terrain’ maps to answer the following questions; a) In which compass direction is the festival from the settlement of Hradec Kralove? b) Approximately how far is it from Hradec Kralove? (Use the scale at the bottom.) c) What is the number of the nearest main road - The E….? d) Apart from the road, another man-made feature runs close to west of the festival site – what is it? e) There is also a natural feature running parallel to it – what is this feature?

What is your first impression of the size of this settlement? b) Go up and down the river, hovering over the blue icons until you find its name. c) Follow the East bank of the river up until you find the icons relating to EXIT Festival. Describe the area used for the festival – does it look built up or open? Sparsely or densely populated? d) Click on the ‘EXIT Festival 04 view’ and ‘Sunrise @ Dance Arena EXIT Festival’ icons and describe what you see in the photographs which appear – does it look like an appealing setting? Task 2 Using Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps, type ‘Novi Sad, Serbia’ into the search box and zoom in and out of the ‘satellite’ map to answer the following questions; a) Describe the situation of Novi Sad in relation to the river. b) What natural feature can you see to the south of the settlement? c) What is the number of the main road to the east of the settlement? d) Type ‘ Fort, Novi Sad, Serbia’ into the search box to find the location of the 2008 EXIT festival. Zoom into this part of the map and explore it. Comment on why you think this part of the city made a good venue for the festival.

Task 1 Using Google Earth – a) Type ‘Benicassim’ into the ‘fly to’ search box. Describe the physical landscape you can see on the map. b) Do you think that this would be an appealing setting? Explain your answer. c) Go to the south-west of Benicassim, zoom in a bit and find the icons with labels saying ‘FIB’ and ‘Escenario Verde’. Zoom right in and describe the site of the festival – is it flat or hilly? Type of surface? Is the immediate area densely or sparsely populated? What is the main type of land-use in the area? d) Click on the actual icons and have a look at the photographs – what landscape feature can you see in the background of some of them? Task 2 Using Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps, type ‘Benicassim’ into the search box and zoom in and out of the various maps to answer the following questions; a) Using the terrain map, what natural feature can you see inland of the settlement? b) What is the name given to this area on the map? c) Approximately how high is the land here? d) Type in ‘Benicassim Festival’ to find the site of the festival – in which direction from the settlement itself is this site? e) The AP-7 primary express highway runs along the coast here – what is its name? f) What is the road number of the road running directly alongside the festival site?
