Buddha Shakyamuni ascended to The Heaven of Thirty Three in order to give teachings to benefit the gods in the desire realms and to repay the kindness of his mother by liberating her from Samsara. This is considered to be one of the great deeds of the Buddha among the twelve great deeds. During Lha Bab Duchen, the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied. It is part of Tibetan Buddhist tradition to engage in virtuous activities and prayer on this day. The course includes talks and guided meditations and will be led by senior student, Anthony Reid. He has been interested in Buddhist practice since the mid 1990s and studied with Ven. Because of Covid, few people come to TBI to listen to teachings, and therefore don’t have the opportunity to meet Ilia in “real life”. I hope the following gives insight into our highly respected and much venerated, translator. Ilia Durovic, formerly a US citizen, is one of the students of the late Geshe Rabten Rinpoche, who was the Counsellor in Religious Affairs of HH the Dalai Lama. Ilia studied Buddhist philosophy under Geshe Rabten’s direction and was his personal French translator in Switzerland until Geshe Rabten’s passing in 1986. Ilia also translated into French for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1985. He then continued studying for many years, taking responsibility for his family after his father’s death in 1988. He came to India in 2001 to attend major teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and shortly after came down to Sera Je (Karnataka, India) with the strong wish to pursue his studies in Buddhist philosophy. As his Tibetan, both colloquial and classi- cal was very good, he was able to start studying Buddhist philosophy privately under the direction of three different Tibetan teachers. One of these was Geshe Yama Rinchen, a very famous scholar, who became his foremost teacher. He then generated the strong wish to become ordained and received Novice and eventually Bhikshu ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama under the name of Tenzin Tenpa. Because of his very good knowledge of Buddhist Philosophy, the then disciplinarian of Sera Je Monas- tery (second only to the Abbot of the monastery) and his teacher , Geshe Yama Rinchen, decided that he should be allowed to enter directly into the fourth year of studies at Sera Je. This was an exceptional decision made at the time. Ilia also successfully passed a debate examination in Tibetan in front of the whole monastery, which comprised 3,500 monks! He is to my knowledge the only Westerner to ever have done so. Ilia Durovic then studied three further years at Sera Je Monastery, completing an in depth study of Buddhist Philosophy. During his studies, he sponsored: • on a very large scale the Sera Je Health Care Center, which is responsible for all health-related issues at Sera Je Monastery. • the Sera Je Library and it’s publishing branch and funded. • the creation of a special compound for Western monastics (Sera IMI), to enable Westerners to study Buddhist philosophy at the source. In addition to these activities, Ilia requested and sponsored numerous teachings for the benefit of the Tibetan monks of Sera Je, and offered his services to translate them into English for the benefit of the westerners who were present. He also translated into English for the benefit of western students “The Easy Path” by Panchen Lobsang Chogyan, which Khensur Kangyur Rinpoche taught to an audience of ca 1,000 monks at Sera Je monastery. 6 Continued from previous page: About Ilia Durovic Ilia specifically requested and sponsored: • The 21 day teachings on “Liberation in the Palm of your Hand”, by Khyabje Phabongka Rinpoche, which was given to well in excess of 1,000 monks and he provided simultaneous translation into English from the Tibetan (20/11/2003-12/12/2003 with a break).

    His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche The successive line of Kyabje Garchen Rinpoche's manifestations and a brief historical account of Gar Monastery Limitless eons in the past, in this world there appeared a powerful Chakravartin king called Tsib- Kyi Mu-Khyü, who established the sentient beings in his realm on the path of the ten virtues. He was the father of a thousand fine princes. Finally, the king became a monk, attained enlightenment, and became the Tathāgata Light of the Nāgas. This Buddha turned the Wheel of Dharma extensively and ripened and liberated countless sentient beings with and without form. His thousand sons all became monks and gave rise to bodhichitta, except for the youngest, who was attached to royal life. Their father made a prophecy foretelling the enlightenment of his sons and which buddha they would become, each one's family, name, and realm to tame beings. With the intention of establishing his youngest son on the path of enlightenment, the Tathāgata emanated two monks and sent them off to him. Chanting sweet songs that taught renunciation, the monks came to the place where the prince was indulging himself in sensual pleasures. By the power of the Buddha's compassion, everything in the palace and the trees outside began to echo the sound of Dharma. The prince's mind changed and he gave rise to disenchantment with saṃsāra. Then he prepared golden parasols bedecked with jewels and offered one to his father, the Buddha, and one to each of his brothers. He gave rise to bodhichitta and became a monk.

    TEACHINGS ON CHÖD TEACHINGS ON CHÖD #1 - Today you are going to receive Chöd empowerment. Chöd empowerment is something that is going to help on getting rid of all negativities. You have received Tara empowerment. Generally people have the tendency of wanting to be choosy about which Tara empowerment, for example; we talk in terms of white, green and all the rest of it. That is OK, but today when we talk about Chöd, the core of this teaching is nothing else but Tara. Again, we came to the same thing we were talking about Tara, just as the monks when they perform, one item (the mask) will be an aspect of the performance and as soon as the performance is finished they will take off the mask, put another set of costumes and masks. So just like that when you receive Tara empowerment (whether be white or green) it is just a matter of changing costumes. The essence, in the case of the monk’s dances, is the one that is doing all the enacting, one who is behind the masks; the mask changes but the essence doesn’t change. The same is when you receive teachings – sometimes you put on the Tara mask sometime is white, sometime is green ... other times you’ll be putting on Machig Labdröm mask and that is what we will be doing. In the case of the teaching the essence is the Buddha nature. That doesn’t change, all other aspects we put on, the masks, those do change. So today it will be Machig Labchi Drolma.

    Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition Michelle Janet Sorensen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Michelle Janet Sorensen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition Michelle Janet Sorensen My dissertation offers a revisionary history of the early development of Chöd, a philosophy and practice that became integral to all Tibetan Buddhist schools. Recent scholars have interpreted Chöd ahistorically, considering it as a shamanic tradition consonant with indigenous Tibetan practices. In contrast, through a study of the inception, lineages, and praxis of Chöd, my dissertation argues that Chöd evolved through its responses to particular Buddhist ideas and developments during the “later spread” of Buddhism in Tibet. I examine the efforts of Machik Labdrön (1055-1153), the founder of Chöd and the first woman to develop a Buddhist tradition in Tibet, simultaneously to legitimate her teachings as authentically Buddhist and to differentiate them from those of male charismatic teachers. In contrast to the prevailing scholarly view which exoticizes central Chöd practices—such as the visualized offering of the body to demons—I examine them as a manifestation of key Buddhist tenets from the Prajñāpāramitā corpus and Vajrayāna traditions on the virtue of generosity, the problem of ego-clinging, and the ontology of emptiness. Finally, my translation and discussion of the texts of the Third Karmapa Rangjung Dorjé (1284-1339), including the earliest extant commentary on a text of Machik Labdrön’s, focuses on new ways to appreciate the transmission and institutionalization of Chöd.

    Practicing the Buddha Dharma in the West : An Interview with H. E. Garchen Triptül Rinpoche Conducted by Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D. The following interview was conducted by Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., at the Garchen Buddhist Institute, Chino Valley, Arizona on December 10, 2001. Garchen Rinpoche is a Drikung Kagyu lama who was known in the thirteenth century as Siddha Gar Chodingpa, a heart disciple of Kyobpa Jigten Sumgon, founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. In ancient India, he had incarnated as Mahasiddha Aryadeva, the lotus- born disciple of the great Nagarjuna. In the seventhUSE century, he was known as Lonpo Gar, the minister of the Tibetan Dharma King Songsten Gampo.     Garchen Rinpoche On the Six Dharmas of Naropa Taught near the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal in August 2012, Right after Garchen Rinpoche’s Retreat in Lapchi Translated by Eric Fry-Miller Background In terms of formal Six Dharmas of Naropa practice, I have merely practiced abbreviated versions of Jigten Sumgön tummo instructions. Traditionally, one practices Five-fold Mahamudra including Chakrasamvara, then Vajrayogini, and then the Six Dharmas of Naropa. One and a half years into my planned three year retreat, the Chinese armies invaded and interrupted my practices. Thus, I have mainly practiced the concise instructions contained in Jigten Sumgön’s Profound Dharma, focusing just on the navel. The main Lama I received transmissions from concerning the Six Dharmas of Naropa is Chime Dorje, though I did not receive extensive instructions. Generally, unless one has received extensive instructions on Vajrayogini, one does not proceed to the Six Dharmas of Naropa. After finishing Five-fold Mahamudra, one begins Vajravarahi practice. One did not even look at the teachings of the Six Dharmas before this. They were hidden deeply. These days everyone can look at everything. There are texts printed everywhere. Back in the day, however, you were not allowed to see those texts. Without doing Vajravarahi, you were not allowed to practice the Six Dharmas. Chime Dorje, who passed away in 1959, was a student of the masters of Katsel Monastery, who practiced the Six Dharmas of Naropa for thirteen years in retreat. He was a real siddha. He could actually place his feet in solid stone. You can see this just like you can see Milarepa’s footprints.
