Cook site, off Lawrence Street, York (site code: YORYM 2001.9444) by Harry Kenward, Allan Hall, Deborah Jaques, Kathryn Johnson and John Carrott Summary Archaeological excavations were carried out by York Archaeological Trust at the former D. C. Cook site, off Lawrence Street, York, in May 2001 and February 2003. Plant and invertebrate remains were investigated from three deposits considered worthy of further examination following an assessment. One, from a feature interpreted as a 10th century oven or kiln, yielded modest concentrations of charred cereal grains (mainly barley and oats) showing evidence of sprouting—and probably representing material burnt during drying of grain in the malting process. Two later, medieval, deposits rich in remains preserved by anoxic ‘waterlogging’ were also studied. They came from features interpreted as a barrel well and a ditch. Both gave abundant evidence for natural, semi-natural and artificial habitats in the vicinity, but with some additional evidence of plant food waste (in the ditch). In some respects the assemblage from the ditchfill seemed more typical of a well fill, whilst the well fill was rich in aquatic invertebrates as would be expected from a ditch deposit. Altogether, these remains offered a rare opportunity to examine the environment (and aspects of the economy) of the inhabitants of an area of the city of York well beyond the city walls. -

The Occurrence of Some Coleoptera in Grass Tussocks, with Special Reference to Michocli1jatic Conditions
1 THE OCCURRENCE OF SOME COLEOPTERA IN GRASS TUSSOCKS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MICHOCLI1JATIC CONDITIONS. By M.L.Luff, B.Sc., A.R.C.S. October, 1964. Imperial College Field Station, Silwood Park, Sunninghill, Ascot, Berkshire. 2 ABSTRACT In this thesis the beetle fauna of grass tussocks is investigated, and the possible importance of the tussocks to the beetles studied. The first section describes the microbabitat in which the beetles live. The occurrence of grass tussocks at Silwood is outlined, and the morphology and growth of Dactylis glomerate L. is described. The micro - climate, especially temperature, in tussocks throughout the year is studied, and compared with that in the intervening grass. The second section deals with the beetle fauna of tussocks. The numbers and species of beetles found both in and between the tussocks throughout the year are studied, and the species which are regular inhabitants of tussocks are listed. An account of the biology of four of these common species is given, with particular reference to the imp- ortance of the tussocks in their biology, and to the stage of the life cycle at which this microhabitat is selected. In the third section, possible effects of the tussocks on the fauna are considered. The behaviour of three common species is investigated with reference to the responses which keep them in tussocks during winter. Some aspects of their movement in and out of tussocks are investigated. The resistance of the three species to cold is studied, and related to the temperatures in the grass in winter. The precipitin test is used to investigate predation by Carabidae outside the tussocks in summer. -

University of York, Environmental Archaeology Unit October 1993 Abstract Insect death assemblages (the accumulated remains of insect body parts), preserved in archaeological and natural deposits, have often been used as an aid to interpreting past environments. This thesis assessesthe extent to which beetle and bug assemblages can be used in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, particularly for woodland habitats, using data from both modern and fossil assemblages from the Vale of York. The study of insect assemblagesaccumulating in modem woodland habitats suggests that species composition may be used to determine whether an assemblage formed under woodland conditions. However, the taxa present in an assemblage appear to be insufficiently constant to permit further interpretation of woodland structure using statistical methods. The use of `ecological groups' to classify species appears to be of value in reducing the complexity of species lists without reducing the interpretative value of the assemblage. The numbers in the broad ecological groups identified could be used to provide a reliable guide to the general ecological conditions under which an assemblage formed. The tree species present in a woodland were well-represented amongst the host- specific phytophagous insects present in the insect assemblages studied, but certain groups of plants, such as the woodland herbs, were not represented. -

It has a rich and varied invertebrate fauna which reflects the wide range of habitats present ranging from sand dunes to wetland and woodland. This paper gives an account of some of the insects and arachnids that have been discovered there during recent surveys. A number of current threats are outlined. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper the insect fauna of the Ardeer area was mentioned as part of a wider review of sand dune sites in Ayrshire (Philp & Hamlin, 2016). Subsequent survey work has shown that the site is much richer than previously known and this paper outlines some new discoveries and discusses their importance, as well as providing greater detail on the importance of the whole site. Trichapion nigrum (Herbst), Ceutorhynchus semirufus LeConte, and Listronotus laramiensis (Angell) are recorded for the first time in Can- ada. Three species, Bagous planatus LeConte, Plocamus hispidulus LeConte, and Dryocoetes granicollis (LeConte), are removed from the province’s faunal list. Components of the fauna are discussed with a particular focus on the introduced species found in the province. Monitoring to detect changes of both native and introduced species is emphasized. Résumé—Soixante-dix-sept espèces des charançons sont nouvellement rapportées au Nouveau- Brunswick augmentant la faune provinciale connue à 206 espèces. Reports from the Environmental Archaeology Unit, York 2002/04 , 30 pp. Technical Report: Biological remains from a site at Bolton Hall, Bolton, East Riding of Yorkshire (site code: TSEP238) by Deborah Jaques, Allan Hall, Stephen Rowland, Harry Kenward, and John Carrott Summary A series of sediment samples and a few fragments of hand-collected bone and shell from deposits revealed by excavations at Bolton Hall, Bolton, East Riding of Yorkshire, were initially examined during an evaluation of their bioarchaeological potential. Useful (though rather variably preserved) assemblages of plant and insect remains were recovered from three of the four examined samples and larger subsamples from these samples were subsequently examined. Two of these three additional subsamples also provided plant material for AMS dating of the deposits. The fill of an Iron Age ditch terminal/pit indicated permanent water with some trees nearby, set in grazing land, but with no conclusive evidence for cultivation or for nearby buildings. The earlier fills of the feature interpreted as a meander of the Spittal Beck indicated natural aquatic deposition with no good evidence for human activity, and no indication of grazing land. The latest layer examined was rich in ashy material and partly-burnt wood and might have originated in bonfire ash thrown into the water. The recovered hand-collected shell and bone fragments were too few and mostly too poorly preserved to be of any interpretative value. Sharp’s Weevil Records. Clive Washington. This document is derived from the Coleoptera records in W.E. Sharp’s “The Coleoptera of Lancashire and Cheshire” which was published in the 1908 volume of the LCES Journal. Sharp’s checklist accumulated records from a wide range of early sources into a single paper, describing our knowledge of the beetle fauna in what is now VC58, 59 and 60, that is Cheshire, South Lancashire and West Lancashire. To produce the list, I have renamed all the records to the presently accepted names, and placed them in the order of Duff’s 2012 Coleoptera Checklist. This should make it substantially easier to cross-check against the main Curculionoidea checklist, and to see whether a particular species was found in the area historically. I’ve transcribed Sharp’s notes on the species largely unchanged, as they often contain useful information about the habitat of the species in question. In places my own further notes are in italics. I had considered amalgamating this information into my recent checklist of Curculionoidea in these Vice-Counties, but decided it would be better as a separate, supplemental document – even though some of these records have already been incorporated via the Curculionoidea recording scheme. For one thing, it’s derived from an OCR of the original paper, with very extensive correction required. Added to this, there have been many name changes, some of which were straightforward but others requiring some considerable taxonomic contortion to find current names. There is always the possibility (hopefully slight!) that something has become horribly mangled in the process.
