Þáttur Sjónvarpsins Í Uppgangi Elvis Presley Félags- og mannvísindadeild MA-ritgerð Í Blaða og Fréttamennsku Þáttur Sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Presley Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Júní 2009 M.A Ritgerð; Þáttur sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Leiðbeinandi: Þorbjörn Broddason Nemandi: Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Kennitala: 150382-3789 2 M.A Ritgerð; Þáttur sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Elvis A aron Presley er frægasti skemmtikraftur sögunnar og e inn áhrifamesti tónlistarmaður 20. aldar. Hann braust fram á sjónarsviðið á miðjum sjötta áratug síðustu aldar þegar heimurinn var tilbúinn til þess að breytast, sérstaklega í augum unga fólksins á þeim tíma. Segja má að ferill Presley s hafi virkilega farið á stað þegar hann kom fram fyrst í sjónvarpi árið 1956. Sjónvarpið átti eftir að vera mjög mikilvægt í uppgangi hans og kom hann fram í ófáum sjónvarpsþáttum á árunum 1956 og 1957. Þegar hann kom fram í Ed Sullivan Show í síðasta skiptið árið 1957 má segja að þáttarstjórnandinn hafi samþykkt Presley f yrir hönd samfélagsins. Stuttu seinna var hann kallaður í bandaríska herinn. Presley einbeitti sér að kvikmyndaleik eftir að ha nn var útskrifaður úr herþjónustu árið 1960 og snéri ekki aftur í sjónvarp fyrr en 1968. Sá sjónvarsþáttur sem hann kom fram í þá var endurkomuþáttur hans og líklegast hans mikilvægasti á ferlinum. Presley endurheimti vinsældir sínar um stund, sem höfðu dalað nokkuð eftir léleg kvikmyndahlutverk, og hóf að koma fram á tónleikum á nýjan leik. Vinsældir hans döluðu síða n aftur og hann átti í vandamálum í einkalífinu og lést árið 1977 aðeins 42. ára gamall. Síðan þá hefur verið meira fjallað um h ann í fjölmiðlum heldur á öllum hans ferli, segja má að ímynd hans hafi verið skrum sk æld í fjölmiðlum eftir dauða h an s. 3 M.A Ritgerð; Þáttur sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Elvis A aron Presley is the most famous entertainer of all time and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His care er started in the mid 1950's when the world was waiting for a chan ge, e specially in the eyes of the younger generation. It is saf e to say that Presley's car eer got a lot of boost when he first performed on television in 1956. Television was a key factor in his c areer in the beginning and he performed in several television shows in 1956 and 1957. When he performed for the third and last time in the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957 Elvis became part of the establishment. Shortly after Presley was drafted to army. After his army days in 1960 he focused on his film care er and did not perform in a television show until 1968. That was his Comeback Special, on e of the most important televison show s in his care er. Presl ey regained his former popularity, which had declined due to bad movie roles, and began to perform on stage again. His popularity declined again and he began to have problem s in his personal life during his last years. He died at the age of 42 in 1977. Since then more has been written about him than during his life, the media has changed his image. 4 M.A Ritgerð; Þáttur sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Efnisyfirlit EFNISYFIRLIT.............................................................................................................................................5 INNGANGUR ................................................................................................................................................6 AÐDÁUN ..................................................................................................................................................... 10 FJÖLMIÐLAR ........................................................................................................................................... 12 ÁHRIF SJÓNVARPS Á FERIL ELVIS PRESLEY............................................................................. 14 THE DORSEY BROTHERS STAGE SHOW....................................................................................... 18 MILTON BERLE SHOW......................................................................................................................... 20 STEVE ALLEN SHOW ............................................................................................................................ 23 ED SULLIVAN SHOW............................................................................................................................. 24 ’68 COMEBACK SPECIAL .................................................................................................................... 27 KONUNGUR DEYR FJÖLMIÐLAR SYRGJA................................................................................... 31 ÁHRIF PRESLEYS Á DÆGURMENNINGU ...................................................................................... 36 ÁHRIF PRESLEYS Á ÍSLANDI............................................................................................................. 38 TÓNLIST BLÖKKUMANNA ................................................................................................................. 40 PRESLEY OG MARKAÐURINN........................................................................................................... 42 LOKAORÐ.................................................................................................................................................. 52 HEIMILDASKRÁ...................................................................................................................................... 55 5 M.A Ritgerð; Þáttur sjónvarps í uppgangi Elvis Ólafur Halldór Ólafsson Inngangur Fólk finnur sig í listamönnum, en hæfileikar þeirra hafa þa nn eiginleika að ná til fjölda fólks. Það er í dag einn mest heimsótti staður í Bandaríkjunum þr átt fyrir að konungur rokksins sé búinn að ver a dáinn í 30 ár. Þúsundir koma þar ár hvert á dánarafmæli Presleys. Enn þann dag í dag eru til dæmis að koma út metsöluplötur með Presley. Árið 2001 birti Forbes blaðið lista yfir hæstu tekjur sem höfðu skapast af ímynd látinna stjarna á því ári. Efst á þe ssu m lista var sala á munum tengdum ímynd Elvis Presley, tekjur af ímynd hans fóru yfir 35 milljónir dala. Á eftir ímynd hans voru tekjur af verkum Charles Schulz, sem voru 20 milljónir, tekjur af ímynd John Lennon voru einnig metnar á 20 milljónir, verkum Theodor „Dr. Seuss“ Geisel 17 milljónir og ímynd Jimi Hendrix 10 milljónir dala (Fong og Lau, 2001). Áhrif Presleys á bandarískt þjóðlíf voru það yfirgengileg að líklegast verða þau seint eða ekki jöfnuð.. Aldrei í sögu ves træn nar menningar hefur komið fram á sjónarsviðið einstaklingur sem hefur haft áhrif á menningu og líf fólks eins og Elvis Aaron Presley gerði á sjötta áratug síðustu aldar. Hann breytti öllu, fyrir Elvis Presley þá var ekkert til sem heitir unglin gam ennin g. Augljóslega höfðu fjölmiðlar mikil áhrif á frama Presleys. Sérstaklega sjónvarpið,

Chapter 1 Introducing Elvis Presley In This Chapter ▶ Outlining Elvis’s place in American history ▶ Summarizing Elvis’s life ▶ Tracking Elvis’s popularity from beginning to end n the one hand, Elvis Presley needs no introduction, because his name Oand face are recognized around the world as the ultimate celebrity. Imitators re-create his act; late-night comedians joke about him; cable chan- nels rerun his movies; and merchandisers exploit his image on everything from T-shirts to lamps. On the other hand, the reasons for his fame have become lost in the trappings of celebrity, especially for younger generations born after his death on August 16, 1977. For the original fans, who have remained loyal for over 50 years, Elvis earned his reputation as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll; for others, discovering why he deserved his fame and a place in American cultural history may be a revelation. In this chapter, I introduce you to Elvis Presley through the high points of his life and career, including his post-death popularity. This chapter sets up an extensive exploration of Elvis Presley — the cultural icon — that details the events of his life, explains the significance of his music, and contemplates his meaning to American pop culture. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL Identifying a Cultural Icon Almost everyone knows that Elvis Presley was a famous singer, but many people don’t fully understand what he contributed to popular music to earn his widespread fame.
