Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell of the Roslin Institute in Scotland shocked the world by announcing the birth of the first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep. With the introduction of Dolly, the international community has realized that the practice of human cloning will become real and possible. The idea of human cloning is moving from the realm of science fiction into the realm of real possibility. Dr. Lee Silver, a molecular biologist at Princeton University, is optimistic and stated in 1998 that "human cloning will occur," and that "it might take five years, ten years at the outermost."! Since Dolly, several other species of mammals, such as goats, mules, pigs, cows, cats, mice and rodents have also been successfully cloned around the world. Among others, these debates have tried to address many key issues such as the negative effect of religious belief, mishaps or lapses in quality control of cloning technology, the welfare of human beings, the individuality and dignity of lives, and the recommendation and enactment of conceivable legislation effectively guiding the framework and governing the development of technology ofhuman cloning. Of course, human cloning technology engages not only religious, cultural, social, and moral challenges,

However, in the short span of time that it has existed, it has not been short of controversy. In the simplest words, human cloning is the creation of an organism which is an exact genetic copy of another. Obviously, this has attracted numerous problems, across the spectrum of mankind. It is an undisputed fact that science and religion have long been in conflict with one another. This has led to religious leaders condemning the process of human cloning, leaving legislatures across the globe in a fix, regarding the laws relating to cloning. Through this paper, the authors try to elucidate each religions perspective on the concept of human cloning, as well as the legal issues regarding the same. Adams, PhD WPI Project Advisor 1 ABSTRACT The overall goal of this project was to document and evaluate the new breakthrough technology of human therapeutic cloning which was finally achieved this year, and to assess the ethical problems associated it. We performed a review of the current research literature and conducted interviews with academic researchers and bioethicists. Our findings indicate that the use of human eggs is the most important ethical consideration in this process, and the use of eggs could become rate-limiting if the process is used to treat human diseases. The problem is further hindered because the eggs need to be fresh and young, and because most states do not have their own specific laws governing egg harvesting, so we recommend that individual states consider changing their laws to allow for donor compensation to increase egg donations. Because the epigenetic status of a cell’s DNA can affect its ability to differentiate and several labs reported DNA mutations in their cells, we recommend that all types of pluripotent cell lines be frequently monitored for DNA mutations, epigenetic modifications, differentiation potential, tumor potential, and ability to treat a disease, before AND after expansion for clinical safety.
