ist zu einem offenen Machtdiskurs geworden, bei dem sich jede Darstellung von Auschwitz – ob als Erinnerung, Polemik oder Analyse veräußert – in einem Kontext unterschiedlicher Zuschreibungen bewegt und jede Rede über Auschwitz zugleich Darstellung von Auschwitz geworden ist. (Krankenhagen, 2) The Holocaust represents a rupture in historiography, philosophy and art. Auschwitz as the epitome of total destruction, as complete breakdown of civilisation resulted in devastation, depression and the question of one’s place in life. Writing literature after Auschwitz without acknowledging and incorporating this fundamental loss, this experience of incredible violence and the trepidation it caused is what Adorno called barbaric. In the aftermath of the catastrophe many writers have in one way or another dealt with the Holocaust or referred to it. This thesis attempts to analyse three novels from 1996 to 2005 in which the Holocaust plays a central role. The principal points of this paper will be the novels’ treatment of the fictional interpretation of the Shoah, the depiction of the protagonists’ trauma and their re-humanization as a reaction to the Nazis’ vilification of their victims as “figuren”, as Anne Michaels calls this deprived status (Fugitive Pieces, 165), the de-humanization of human beings. Memory is certainly another focal point of these novels. The shared process of fixing memory regarding certain events and the role of memory for questions of identity and finding a way to live on after the Shoah also feature prominently in the novels and therefore also in my thesis. The earliest of the three novels dealt with in this thesis is Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels. It is the only novel by Anne Michaels so far. Born in 1958 to a Russian immigrant to the U.S., Michaels is no contemporary witness to World War II and the genocide of the Jews. In her poetry and prose writing Michaels however tries to understand how the individual copes with these events. Her approach in Fugitive Pieces is retrospective and personal, tracing the impact of the Shoah through the

Challenging the common critical understanding that reduces Crepuscularism to a pre-modern poetic regression while identifying Futurism with Marinetti’s hymn to technological progress, I argue that these two Avant-Gardes share similar reactions to the modern bourgeois paradigm, both at a cognitive and ontological level. Overcoming the ghettoization of Crepuscularism as a provincial Italian phenomenon, the first chapter maps the historical and cultural setting of this movement, illustrating its intersection with philosophy, visual arts, and mysticism. In the subsequent chapter, I borrow from Bruno Latour’s thesis that modernity encounters its limits in dealing with cross-category relationships such as nature-culture and human-thing. Crepuscularism expresses its Avant-Garde role by ushering in an anti-modern discourse on hybridization that Futurism inherits and further develops. The third chapter explores how the two currents envision cognition as immediate intuition and participative immersion that entails also ignorance, understood as maximum freedom of knowing.

After-Words: Postmemory and Writing Perpetration. An MA thesis in two parts. Unintelligible: A Memoir of Unassumable Inheritance is a short work that straddles the boundaries of memoir and creative non-fiction. It explores themes of intergenerational guilt and responsibility in the context of the author’s discovery of her grandfather’s role in the Hungarian Arrow Cross coup of October Fifteenth, 1944, that enabled the deportation, ghettoization and mass murder of the Budapest Jews. The intent of the memoir is not only to confess this legacy, but to meditate on its influence on the rest of the family – Captain Szörényi-Reischl’s loving wife, his son born during the war, and his granddaughter, brought up in Australia – and through their experiences to explore more generally the personal and emotional effects of trans-generational responsibility for historical atrocity, a predicament that might be called ‘perpetrator postmemory’ or ‘postguilt’. The work explores how the conflicted, partial and tentative structures of postmemory , expressed in the creative work through techniques of fragmentation, intertextuality and unreliable, multi-voiced narration, can lend themselves to the task of understanding, without condoning, the structures of genocide. The work has three aims: firstly, to bear witness to the phenomenon of an inter- generational effect of perpetration, and secondly to explore on an intimate, familial scale the structures that enabled and justified such perpetration, and the structures of denial and avoidance that kept it secret, narrowing lives in the process.

    1 IN RELATION: THE POETICS AND POLITICS OF CUBA’S GENERATION-80 Roberto Tejada In Cuba, the first generation of writers, artists and intellectuals, actually born and raised within the social standpoint of the Revolution, came into its own during the decade of the 1980s. Poet and critic Osvaldo Sánchez, in a sidelong reference to Ernesto Ché Guevara and his essay “Socialism and Man in Cuba,” addressed the defining conditions this generation would have to defy: “[T]hese ‘children of the Utopia’ discovered that it wasn’t particularly stimulating to be the ‘docile wage-workers of official thought.’ So it was that in the early 1980s, the State began to feel increasingly threatened by the critical discontent and the political distrust shared by the youngest members of the intelligentsia, whose obsession with turning Cuba’s social reality into a truly liberating enterprise was to disclose, eventually, all the moral atrophy and the ideological contradictions of a system based on simulacra, manipulation and inefficiency.” In what follows, I recall and rehearse this notion of the simulacrum as employed by Reina María Rodríguez in relation to other Cuban writers of the Generación de los ochenta. Like and unlike the visual culture that was being fashioned at the time by Cuban painters, sculptors, installation-makers and performance artists—a ferociously iconoclastic project aimed at the monolithic officialdom of political and sexual attitudes that were a residue of Cuba’s “grey years” (1971-1976)—the poetry of the 1980s participated in the above general revision while faced with its own critiques to wage, specific to written discourse.

Sebald and Writing of his Generation Gillian Selikowitz A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney, 2016. 1 Abstract W.G. Sebald is widely perceived as a literary phenomenon, and critics assert the uniqueness of his prose fiction, and its position in the context of post-war German literature. In this study, I challenge the widely-held view that the narrative prose of W.G. Sebald is aloof from that of his generation, and demonstrate that his writing reveals not only significant thematic connections with that of his generation, but an intensification of the resentment and ambivalence that mark the earlier writing of his generation. My study is a comprehensive comparative reading of Sebald’s narrative prose and the writing of the German “second” generation, and builds on a small body of work by Morgan, Taberner, Davies and others. Exploration of Sebald’s prose fiction within a generational paradigm reveals significant connections between his writing and the literary, social, and political preoccupations that define the earlier, ambivalent writing of his generation. My study challenges the widespread perception of Sebald’s uniqueness, as well as the tendency to mystification that exists in critical appreciation of Sebald’s writing. Situating Sebald in a generational context has significant implications for our reading of his work: it allows us to identify his narrative prose as a belated, intensified, and elaborately figurative confrontation with the inheritance that troubled his second-generation cohort.

Abstract Following World War II the novel faced a crisis in its mode of address. How could the human and humane function of language and artistic representation be lent to the depiction of historical terror or trauma? Who has the right to speak on behalf of – or to assume the voice of – victims of such real atrocity? And to what extent can a writer attend to another’s pain without aestheticising extreme vulnerability, or losing the reader to indifference or repulsion? The difficulties confronted by the writer of fictional works when addressing such issues as war, rape, domestic abuse, colonisation, slavery, even genocide are not rooted in an inadequacy of syntax; rather they are borne out of the disjunction between the idealistic assumptions that linked language to a sense of humanity, intelligence and the pursuit of goals beneficial to society as a whole, and the extremity of recent acts of human atrocity as conducted not by the savage Other but by modern societies with which the reader would otherwise identify.
