Brought up in the environment of Folk Music from my early childhood, I was deeply influenced by my grandfather GOSAI ‘Shri Bramha Pada Sikari’, my uncle & and my father who introduced me to Lalon Geeti, Mahajani Pad, Baul, Gajon, and other forms of Folk Music. So as you see, it all started on the soil of South Bengal where from the denizens I drew the inspiration to imbibe the true spirit of Folk Music. Subsequently, owing to my father’s transferable job, we moved around quite a bit and it was during this phase that I was exposed to other music forms like Bhojpuri, Bihu, Santhaly, Qawwali. I also learnt & have been performing other forms like Tusu, Bhadu, Jhumur, Bhatiali, Bhawaiya, Chotka, Sari, Agamani & Prabhati. I remain indebted forever to all those around me who ushered in me at an early age an intense desire to become a folk artist. Fortunately in the early nineties my marriage to Krishnendu landed me in Nadia and I whole heatedly dedicated myself to ‘Lalon Geeti’. With passing time my association with different Bauls & Fakirs gave me an insight into their lifestyle & philosophy which is by itself a very interesting dimension if we keep aside the lyrical & melody components. At times I have been very inspired and motivated by some of my acquaintances in Bangladesh and have learnt a lot from them too. Quite interestingly, in the meanwhile my only daughter Ayushi grew... Z a h u r u l H a q u e Indiana University East Pakistan takes up the eastern part of Bengal, formerly a province of British India. It consists of an area of 55,134 square miles with a population of over fifty-five millions. This land of rivers and green fields has always provided an easy, carefree life for its people, and has moulded their character and folklore accordingly. The abundant folklore of East Pakistan contains a variety of elements, which is partly to be explained by historical forces. From the third century A.D. on, the Mouryas, the Guptas, the Palas, the Senas and the Muslims came one after another to rule the land, and grafted their ways of life and culture traits on the indigenous population. Subsequently Portuguese, French and English ships anchored in the harbors of Bengal, and left not only their merchandise but also their customs. Among these foreign traders, the British became most powerful, and were able to consolidate their authority at the expense of the fading empire of the Mughal rulers. The battle of Plassy in 1757 ended with the defeat of the Nawab of Bengal. This British victory ensured the supremacy of the British East India Company over the entire subcontinent of present-day India and Pakistan for nearly two hundred years. All the Indian states is remarkably good in their cultural representation, thus West Bengal is one of them with reach cultural tourism product. Folk culture creates authenticity and distinctiveness in the global and regional tourism market. Tourism experiences which can connect people and visitors to local cultures are very important in this regard. All folk art and culture forms of West Bengal are ethnic in nature. They remain within a particular geographical region – Bhadu and Jhumur of Bankura, Jhumur and Nanchni of Purulia are the finest example. Folk culture tourism also encourages the continued recognition of culture as economic drivers by local, regional tour operators, local people and tourism marketing organizations. Love beyond Boundaries: Subjectivity and Sexuality through Bhawaiya Folk Song of Bengal By Nasrin Khandoker, Maynooth University, Ireland and Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh Abstract: Boundaries mark limits, and as such the transgression of boundaries is inherently subversive. My research on the Bhawaiya songs of Bengal examines this transgression. Most love songs in Bhawaiya are about ‘illicit’ love, deviating from social norms and often occur in reaction to oppressive marital circumstances. They are a gateway to exploring female narratives of subjecthood and desire, in which women are the agents of their own sexuality. My focus is on deviance from marriage in the Bhawaiya folk songs as a form of subversion. Understanding Bhawaiya and its subversive existence requires an understanding of political, religious, linguistic and cultural boundaries of the Bhawaiya areas. Cooch Behar, the birthplace of the Bhawaiya genre, has historically been situated on blurred boundaries: between the cultural borders of Bengali and Rajbangshi, the religious borders of Islam and Hinduism, the governmental borders of the British Raj and Hindu kingdom and the borders of the Colonial and Bengali nationalist narratives. Even now, the Bhawaiya areas are divided by the international borders of Bangladesh and India. These blurred boundaries create a space for marginal peoples to develop and create their own cultural products, using the language of affection to resist and subvert patriarchal social rules. Indigenous Knowledge of Rajbanshi agriculturists of northern West Bengal, India Ashok Das Gupta, Dept. of Anthropology, University of North Bengal, India 734004 This paper is a small ethnographic documentation of Indigenous Knowledge of Rajbanshi agriculturists of northern West Bengal, India. This paper is a small ethnographic documentation of Indigenous Knowledge of Rajbanshi agriculturists of northern West Bengal, India. Rajbanshi is a caste-community overlap and as a huge social fold intake various heterogeneous groups in plains and uplands of sub-Himalayan northern west Bengal state of India. Their informal experimentation, trial and error, folk life, tradition, cultural symbols, generation-wise intellectual reasoning are equally important to gather scattered indigenous knowledge traits and their cognate Indigenous Knowledge System extending from mode of production and division of labour to their structure and super structure. This is basically a qualitative study and will highlight various services by both Rajbanshi males and females to attain organic cultivation and management of biodiversity. North Bengal jungles, mountains and agrarian lands are biodiversity hotpots and like various other indigenous communities Rajbanshis show their contribution in production and food preservation. They have developed a lifestyle that may look poor but actually fitting into local environments. Their kitchen garden, highland and lowland cultivations and use of forest and water resources and cattle hordes cum poultry develop together a complex system that can serve a wider public.
