Homer Rodeheaver: Reverend Trombone Douglas Yeo Historic Brass Society Journal (peer-reviewed) Volume 27, 2015 The Historic Brass Society Journal (ISSN1045-4616) is published annually by the Historic Brass Society, Inc. 148 W. 23rd Street, #5F New York, NY 10011 USA YEO 1 Homer Rodeheaver: Reverend Trombone Douglas Yeo Introduction Since his death in 1955, Homer Rodeheaver (1880–1955) has slipped into obscurity, an astonishing fact given that he played the trombone for as many as 100 million people in his lifetime. While not nearly so accomplished as the great trombone soloists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Arthur Pryor, Simone Mantia, and Leo Zimmerman, Rodeheaver’s use of the trombone in Christian evangelistic meetings—par- ticularly during the years (1910–30) when he was song leader for William Ashley “Billy” Sunday—had an impact on American religious and secular culture that continues today. Rodeheaver’s tree of influence includes many other trombone-playing evangelists and song leaders, including Clifford Barrows, song leader for the evangelistic crusades1 of William Franklin “Billy” Graham. While Homer Rodeheaver was one of the most successful publishers of Christian songbooks and hymnals of the modern era—he owned copyrights to many of the most popular gospel2 songs of the first half of the twentieth century—and was the owner of and a recording artist with one of the first record companies devoted primarily to Christian music, the focus of this article is on Rodeheaver as trombonist and trombone icon, his use of the trombone as a tool in leading large congregations in singing, the particular instruments he used, his trombone recordings, and his legacy and influence in inspiring and encouraging others to utilize the trombone as a tool for large-scale Christian evangelism.

  • Extending Generalizations About the Disposition of Meaningful
ASSOCIATION FOR CONSUMER RESEARCH Labovitz School of Business & Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, 11 E. Superior Street, Suite 210, Duluth, MN 55802 Extending Generalizations About the Disposition of Meaningful Possessions to Buyers With a Shared Self John Lastovicka, Arizona State University USA Karen Fernandez, University of Auckland NZ We extend Lastovicka and Fernandez’ (2005) naturalistic study of garage sales to an on-line setting, and offer prescriptions for both buyers and sellers of meaningful possessions. It has been argued that it is in buyers’best interests to appear uncommitted in their enthusiasm about products when negotiating with a seller. In contrast, our field research with on-line auction buyers suggests the opposite. In the case of a consumer disposing of a meaningful possession through selling—when a shared self is sensed between the buyer and the seller—our results show such disclosure is a benefit to the buyer. • Restoration of Regal Archtop Guitar
Restoration of Regal Archtop Guitar Performed by Ron Cook January, 2004 For Michele O’Brien of Salinas, California Background The Regal name has been around since around 1896, but since 1900, when the original owner, Emil Wulschner, died, it has been owned by many companies, including Lyon & Healy and Harmony. Regal is best known for distributing Dobro guitars in the 1930's. (John Dopyera and his two brothers started the National Resophonic Company in the '20's. John split later and created the Dobro name and instruments, marketed by Regal.) The f-hole (Jazz) acoustic guitar was developed by Gibson in the '30's. No his- torical references note the actual date Regal started building f-hole acoustics, but it was between 1930 and 1940. They were built up into the 1960's by the Harmony Company. Regals are still made, but only resonator guitars--and they're now built in Korea and distributed by Saga Musical Instruments of San Francisco. John Dopyera and his Dobro Company also built electric guitars, f-hole and resonator, since 1933, for his own company and for Regal. It’s possible Dobro built this particular Regal archtop since there are no serial marks or internal labels, which Dopyera stopped inserting around 1938 after he acquired all rights to the National Guitar Company (his brother’s company). I used a flexible mirror and light to check the interi- or for any problems. I found none internally. I also didn’t find any labels, or penciled or stamped marks. Valuation This instrument is hard to set a value on since very few Regal archtop guitars have come on the market, and those were post-war instruments (1945 to 1960).

  • Medieval to Metal: the Art and Evolution of the Guitar MEDIEVAL to METAL: the ART and EVOLUTION of the GUITAR September 29Th, 2018-January 6Th, 2019
EXHIBITION RESOURCE PACKET Medieval to Metal: The Art and Evolution of the Guitar MEDIEVAL TO METAL: THE ART AND EVOLUTION OF THE GUITAR September 29th, 2018-January 6th, 2019 How to use this resource: This packet is designed to be flexible. Use it to help prepare for a docent-led tour of the museum, to inform a self-guided tour, or to discuss selected artworks in your classroom, whether you’re able to physically visit the museum or not. The suggested activities (page 7) should be used in conjunction with in-depth discussion of at least one related artwork. The guitar has been a signature element of world culture for more than 500 years. As the guitar’s ancestors evolved over centuries from the earliest ouds and lutes to the signature hourglass shape we all know today, guitar makers experimented with shapes, materials, and accessories, seeking the perfect blend of beauty and sound. Spanning centuries of design and craftsmanship, this exhibition takes visitors through the history of an object that is one of the most recognizable items on the planet. Art and music transcend cultural boundaries while the most recognized musical instrument—the guitar—has influenced culture beyond music. Through the years the guitar and its shape have been integral elements for artists such as Vermeer and Picasso and today they are incorporated into the advertisements of everything from clothes to car. What guitars are in the show? The following 40 guitars are included in the exhibition: Oud (North Africa) Maccaferri Plastic Lute (Europe) Silvertone 1487 Speaker

  • For Years, Richard Hawley Seemed Pretty Content As a Sideman
GBINTERVIEW RICHARD HAWLEY S The NorthSHEFFIELD’S FAVOURITE MUSICALtar SON, RICHARD HAWLEY, TELLS MATT FROST ABOUT HIS MOST CHALLENGING ALBUM TO DATE ... For years, Richard Hawley seemed pretty content as a sideman. Having emerged in the early ’90s with promising yet ultimately ill-fated Sheffield indie band The Longpigs, Hawley went on to lend his considerable guitar skills to Pulp, alongside the odd smattering of session work for everyone from Robbie Williams to All Saints. However, since shifting to centre stage in 2000, unleashing both his velvet rich voice and achingly beautiful songwriting on an unsuspecting public, the solo career of Mr Richard Hawley has burned ever brighter with each subsequent release. His third full-length album, Cole’s Corner, released in 2005, earned Hawley a Mercury Music Prize nomination, while 2007’s Lady’s Bridge broke the top 10. ➔ So, where does he go from here? 16 GUITARBUYER OCTOBER 2009 OCTOBER 2009 GUITARBUYER 17 GBINTERVIEW RICHARD HAWLEY Gutter Pressure “The juxtaposition of those two awley’s latest album, titled words ‘Truelove’ and ‘gutter’ – that Truelove’s Gutter, is set for seemed to me to somehow sum the “Once the issue Hrelease in late September record up,” says Richard. “A lot of 2009.
