New Hope United Methodist Church 405-721-5015 11600 N. Council Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73162 www.newhopeokc.org After ten years of serving at New Hope, the District Superintendent of the Crossroads District, Rockford Johnson, suggested I take a sabbatical. I searched for an experience that would be inspiring, spiritually uplifting, and educational I decided that a spiritual pilgrimage was in order and my prayers were answered when Karrie and I were accepted as participants in the Wesley Pilgrimage in July 8 -18. We

will fly to London on July 4 and spend a few days sightseeing and going to the theater, Wicked and Hamilton, to be exact.

On Monday, July 8 we will take the train to Salisbury and Sarum College. Theological education began at Old Sarum in 1092 with the construction of the old cathedral. Old Sarum was abandoned with the construction of New Sarum, or Salisbury, in the 1220s, when a new cathedral was built and several colleges were established. During the pilgrimage we will worship each day. The days will begin with morning prayer & Eucharist. We will end each day with night prayer, known as Compline. Each worship time includes singing at least one Charles Wesley hymn. The Sarum College chapel has a very fine piano we can use for our worship. Karrie will be one of the pianists helping to lead in worship. Some of the experiences will include: A visit to and the places where Methodism emerged: Christ Church, Lincoln College, and St. Mary’s Church. We will visit the boyhood home of Francis Asbury and explore Epworth, the boyhood home of John and Charles Wesley. In Epworth, pilgrims will visit St. Andrew’s Church, where Samuel Wesley served as Rector for 35 years.

Salisbury Cathedral Sarum College We will worship with the people of Salisbury Methodist Church, which was established as Methodist Society in 1757 by John Wesley and served by Francis Asbury before he departed for America. Further Wesleyan opportunities include a visit to the Charles Wesley House, John Wesley’s Chapel and house, a walking tour in London of important Wesley/Methodist sites including the Aldersgate Memorial Monument. We will also worship at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

This Pilgrimage is sponsored by Discipleship Ministries and Upper Room. Leaders of the group include Dr. Steven Manskar who wrote Disciples Making Disciples; Dr. Paul Chicote, Professor of Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary; Fred Day, General Secretary of The United Methodist Commission on Archives and History, and Rev. Tom Albin, who serves as Director of Spiritual- Formation and Congregational Life at The Upper Room. Pray for us as we travel, study, and worship on this wonderful Wesleyan experience! JD and Karrie

In the last couple of newsletters, we have started a conversation about Cali’s Corner Discipleship and what it looks like here at New Hope. We have defined a Disciple as “Someone who is intentional about following Jesus”. At New Hope, we strive to help you be intentional by nurturing and empowering you to make disciples as well. Our system is using the letters H.O.P.E. to guide us as we put in place ministries that help us accomplish our mission to make disciple by “building loving relationships through the HOPE that is in Jesus Christ.” For an overview H—Hospitality O – Offer Christ P – Purpose E – Engagement This time we will dig a little into Purpose. When we create opportunities for individuals through worship and small groups to learn what it means to live out our faith, we are fulfilling this aspect of purpose. We have been given the best news the world needs and we need to learn how to be light in our world. Our small groups, including Sunday school, is how we create these opportunities. The E in our acronym is for Engagement. This is where we all get to put our faith in action within the walls of the church and beyond. The gospel message is a call to action. How can we make a difference in our world today? That is the broad question. How can we help you make a difference in your family, in your workplace, in your own circle of influence? The is the question that guides our discipleship planning for studies, fellowship, and mission opportunities. I ask you this question: Do you have someone that lived Christ in front of you? Someone that pointed you to Jesus without being “Preachy”? That is what we want to do when we engage our world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We want you to be a part of it! In the fall we will be offering ways for you to participate in your discipleship path! Come and join us as we journey together as disciples of Jesus Christ! Blessings, Pastor Cali
