CAVALCADE 15th – 22nd February 2 0 1 4 Ranfurly, in the heart of the Maniototo Plain will welcome the Cavalcade on the 22nd of February 2014. The Maniototo Plain is surrounded by the Rough Ridge, Kakanui, Rock & Pillar and Mt Ida ranges that all featured in the Otago goldfields story. Settlements of Naseby, Kyeburn Diggings, Hamiltons, Patearoa, Garibaldi and Serpentine all sprung up, most temporarily, to support their respective goldfields. Ranfurly, far from the gold bearing mountains and gullies developed later with the Otago Central Railway. The town was associated with the next wave of business and industry. So rather than the Victorian buildings associated with the gold-mining towns, Ranfurly’s buildings reflect another time with the Art Deco architectural style featuring strongly. To celebrate this aspect of our heritage Ranfurly has an annual Art Deco Festival with music, entertainment, an art exhibition, market stalls, vintage cars, food and fun. This year we are thrilled to be combining our Festival with the last day of the 2014 Cavalcade. We look forward to a great party where flappers and gangsters mingle with hardy pioneering folk – we welcome you to ‘DECO-CADE’! Saturday: We join up with Malcolm Oakes’ trail who have over-nighted at Johnny Hore’s place and together head for the ride-in at Ranfurly. Further information: Our ride is usually one of the smaller trails with plenty of seasoned campaigners. It’s also a good ride to take on if you are new to cavalcading and/or your horse is reasonably new to trail riding. Having said that, for your horse’s sake please ensure s/he is fit and well use to their tack. It is advised to have your horse freshly shod with new shoes or shod at least within three weeks of the cavalcade. The trail is stony in places and there’s no farrier. Our caterers are very capable Middlemarch men who are fundraising for their local primary school. They run a reasonable priced bar, please support them. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Johnny Hore who provided the outline for each day’s trail and local contacts of the land we cross. Also many thanks to the Crutchley family of Shortlands Station and the Inder family, owners of the two locations where we are staying, and landowners whose properties we cross. Back up support is fine and we look forward to your company. Regards. Jane Whitmore 'BOUNDARY RIDERS' – Cloverleaf riding trail.
