    “Ruinensehnsucht” - Longing for Decay in Computer Games Mathias Fuchs Centre for Digital Cultures, ICAM Leuphana University/ Germany [email protected] ABSTRACT There is no technical reason and no quality inherent to the medium of computer games that would require corrosion, dust, and ruins. Pixels do not corrode and 3D geometry is not affected by physical decay. Yet if we look at contemporary computer games we find an abundance of ruined buildings, of mould and of all forms of decay of organic matter and inorganic materials. It would be too easy to explain this fact by an attempt to increase realism, because some of these games clearly feature more decay than reality could ever produce. There must be a longing of designers and players to immerse themselves within an environment of disintegrating, decaying objects. The author investigates the longing for decay along four threads that are informed by computer games history, art history, psychoanalytic reasoning and the concept of transmedia megatext. DIGITAL DUST Some of the most interesting of recent computer games celebrate the beauty of ruins and invite us to get immersed into landscapes of ruins from antiquity to space age. The ruins are set in post-nuclear war environments (Metro 2033)1, sites of archaeological excavations and discovery (Tomb Raider)2, technological disaster areas (Fallout3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.4), medieval environments (Assassins’s Creed)5, industrial wreckage (UnrealTournament)6, mythological places that are known for the buildings they once contained (Ruins)7, or even completely fictional places (Journey)8.

    University of Portsmouth School of Creative Technologies Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries An investigation of ambient gameplay By Mark Eyles The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. September 2012 Abstract Inspired by Brian Eno's ambient music, which is persistent and supports different levels of engagement, this research explores ambient gameplay in computer, video and pervasive games. Through the creation of original games containing ambient gameplay and looking for ambient gameplay in existing commercial games, this research focuses on gameplay that supports a range of depths of player engagement. This research is not concerned with ambient intelligent environments or other technologies that might support ambience, but focusses on gameplay mechanisms. The definition of ambient music is used as a starting point for developing a tentative set of properties that enable ambient gameplay. A game design research methodology is initially used. Two very different research games, Ambient Quest (using pedometers) and Pirate Moods (using RFID, radio-frequency identification, technology) are analysed. The resulting qualitative ambient gameplay schema contains themes of persistence, discovery, engagement, invention, ambiguity and complexity. In order to confirm the wider applicability of this result a case study of an existing commercial game, Civilization IV, is undertaken. Ambient gameplay properties of engagement, complexity, abstraction, persistence and modelessness identified in Civilization IV, and other commercial games, are combined with the ambient gameplay schema to develop a definition of ambient gameplay. This definition is the basis for a set of investigative lenses (lenses of persistence, attention, locative simultaneity, modelessness, automation and abstraction) for identifying ambient gameplay.

The art style is drawn from the real world, using low-poly models. The game is built upon a unique peer-to-peer networking model, which allows for a low-resource server. It also features a terrain rendering system that utilizes PNGs to store landscape data efficiently. Along with the game, a suite of custom development tools were built to allow developers to insert game content quickly.     Chernobyl and Stalker: ‘Splinters of the Soviet Empire’ Dr Nick Rush-Cooper, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Geography, University of Durham, UK. We are in pitch darkness. Maxim, the lead tour guide, leads the group of visitors from the front and takes us down a short corridor within the ruins of ‘Energetik’; the cultural centre of Pripyat, the town built to house the workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. I’m taking up the rear and a visitor turns to ask me where this leads. “To the back of the centre where we exit to reach where the Ferris wheel is” I tell them, though, in all honestly, that’s partly a guess and I’m not really sure. I may have visited the Zone almost a dozen times for the purposes of my PhD, and will visit over a dozen more, but this is only the second day I’m working as a tour guide[1] and I think that Maxim’s having some fun with me by taking the group through paths I’ve not used before. But it’s a short corridor and, soon enough, we emerge into the sunlight streaming into the small swimming pool at the back of the centre. We pause as visitors begin to take photographs, and I continue a conversation from earlier with a visitor; she explains to me that despite the bright sunlight and the sheer amount of greenery, she finds the place unsettling; “like a horror movie.” Another visitor chimes in; “or something like I Am Legend.” The first exclaims; “I’m amazed at how green it is; I’ve been playing a lot of Fallout 3, so I was expecting more of a wasteland.” As we speak a member of the group has jumped into the swimming pool to have a closer look at the old film reels that have been dumped there.

Doing so allows Roadside Picnic’s first contact narrative to be read through an understanding of the reflective and introspective qualities of things, and the ways in which things reflect cultural values and realities of twentieth century life in the Soviet Union. Within the discussion of the objects of the text, the landscapes which define the text will be observed as equally important representations of humanity’s struggle with knowledge and control.

They became the spiritual leaders of Russian sci-fi literature in the 1960s, and to this day, their influence remains immense - entire generations were brought up on their books and loved them for their unique style. Though the early works of the Strugatsky bothers lacked individuality – at the beginning of their writing career their novels and short stories resembled those of Ivan Yefremov, a Soviet paleontologist and science fiction author who was the brothers’ lifetime icon and role model. Strugatsky novels were very different from ordinary sci-fi novels: strictly speaking they didn’t write showpiece science fiction. The brothers have always tried to write not just about spaceships, technology or other fantastic stuff, but also about people and their problems. At the beginning of the 1990s the brothers became the best-known and loved Soviet science-fiction writers abroad – their works were translated into multiple languages and published in 27 countries; a success Russian writers rarely experienced in the West. Arkady Strugatsky. Childhood. Arkady Strugatsky was born on 28 August 1925 in Batumi, Georgia; his mother was a teacher and his father – a fine arts expert, who at the same time earned a bit on the side as a newspaper editor. Two months after the elder son was born, in autumn 1925, the family moved to Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). When WWII broke out, Arkady first helped constructing defenses and then assisted at the grenade manufactory.

Helbock ii Abstract During the latter half of the twentieth century, Andrei Tarkovsky received arguably more critical admiration for his films than any Soviet director. During his filmmaking career, the Soviet Union experienced a tumultuous socio-cultural, as well as political, moment. After the death of Stalin, the Khrushchev Thaw of the late 1950s and early 1960s allowed for significantly more freedom of expression. It was at this time that Tarkovsky’s career began. However, through the 1960s and 1970s, a reactionary period in Soviet politics led to a return of stringent censorship, making Tarkovsky’s filmmaking process difficult. In the early 1980s, Tarkovsky emigrated to Western Europe, where he completed his final two films before his death in 1986. Due to his contentious relationship with the Soviet state, this thesis will attempt to analyze Tarkovsky and assess his relationship to the Russian intelligentsia and the dissident movements of the late twentieth century, as well as his relationship with spirituality and religion.
