LETTER Dear Editor,

Please can someone explain why after over thirty years of starting at 7pm, summer training has been moved to 6.30pm, with as far as I am aware, no explanation or consultation with the membership.

BOOTHY’S BIT

April and May have been an extremely busy time for the club with races galore on the roads, trails and fells, plus weekly Parkruns!. At the beginning of April, David Bailey and his team organised the Pendle Fell Race which, with its associated junior races, incorporated the Fell Championships. 41 senior and 19 junior Harriers competed. Congratulations to Lancashire Champions: Briony Holt (FU14), Alan Life (M50), Pete Booth (M60) and Katy Thompson (F60). [Results on p18 & p26.]

At the end of the month there was another very busy weekend with 9 members making the long trip to the Virgin London Marathon on Saturday and 25 tackling the Three Peaks Fell Race the following day. Special mention must go to Kieran Carr for smashing the V70 record, Katy Thompson for her 21 st completion of the race and to El Presidente, Dave Scott for his 48 th ! [A report on a special day for Dave is on p6.]

The weekend of the 16 th /17 th May saw the British Masters’ Road Relays on Saturday, with the Calderdale Way Relay on Sunday. 35 members made up 10 road relay teams, while there were 48 members in our 4 CWR teams. By my calculation, 9 members ran in both relays – fantastic commitment to the club. There were some great performances in both relays. Reports and results are on pp15, 16 & 17.

The following Friday and Saturday, 22 nd /23 rd May, 58 members (over a quarter of the total entry) ran in the club road championship Colne 10K, while 38 seniors and 20 juniors took part in the closed club fell races at Barley on Saturday afternoon.

Club members are ‘flying the flag’ and enjoying a wide range of events and activities, which are encouraged and reported on in great detail on the club’s Facebook pages and website. A small number of members are working tirelessly each week to keep everyone informed. In this age of instant communication this means that the committee has decided that the role and format of this Newsletter should change. There’s a message from Chairman Jim regarding the Newsletter ‘s future overleaf.

….and finally A very belated welcome to Fabienne Richmond. Fabienne didn’t get a welcome in the Newsletter when she joined last year. My apologies!

THE HARRIER NEWSLETTER

The monthly newsletter has served the club well for a long time, and I know that many members will be sorry to see it go. However, I share the committee’s view that a bi-annual full colour magazine available in printed form to all members will be a better way of providing a permanent record of our achievements. I will be very happy to receive any suggestions for ensuring that the website provides information in the most effective way when the newsletter ceases publication.

Of course, for the magazine to happen we need an Editor. It’s envisaged that the magazine will contain running related articles written by members as well as reports and results from important races. The Editor will need to be significantly involved with the club’s activities, will therefore be well placed to spot topics that will interest members, and will encourage potential authors to write articles. An interesting magazine will set our club apart from all the other local clubs, further reinforcing that we are the best.

So if you think you could be Magazine Editor, please get in touch with myself or any committee member without delay!

Jim Hickie Chair

A Secret Surprise!

Once upon a time on 29 April 1973 Justine Scott was taken to her first '3Peaks' in a pushchair to watch her dad, then aged 30, run the race. She continued every year to watch and cheer him on with her younger brother, various friends and eventually a husband, until 2005 when she went to live in Denver, Colorado. Her dad continued to run another, and another, and another. His 'final' target was to complete a race aged 70, so joining a very small group who'd done likewise. That should have been in 2013, but that year his 70th birthday fell the day after the race, therefore running it twice as a 69 year old. So in 2014, aged nearly 71, having completed 47, she and many others thought that was the last. In recognition of all his runs Justine decided she'd like to organise a perpetual award to be given to the oldest finisher on the day, whatever their age, male or female. She contacted the 3 Peaks Committee as to whether this would be acceptable and was given the go-ahead. Dave then announced he was going to run another, in which case he could very well be the first recipient of his own award. So Justine decided to keep her plans a secret, not wishing to put any pressure on her dad...... feeling delighted if he WAS the oldest on the day, but equally pleased if it was awarded to someone else. She chose and ordered her trophy 'on line' with appropriate engraving and then had the problem of where to deliver it. Not to parents' house obviously! Brother, Alistair, works and wasn't often in. Enter Val and Richard Lawson, who were let into the secret and duly took delivery. Next it was ''Mum, do you think you could give a little speech on my behalf at the presentation to explain it all?''...... and ''Uncle John, do you think you could film the presentation on your iPad and forward it to me?'' Race day arrived, 25 April 2015. I no longer stay to watch the start, just tipping Dave and his bag out at Horton and carrying on to a specified spot in the layby before Ribblehead, so Val and Richard were entrusted to deliver the precious package to Douglas Croft, who is in charge of the presentation ceremony. Dave does turn out to be the oldest entrant to start and despite a fall early on, on the stony lane, he arrived with 11mins to spare at Ribblehead, looking good! However, after a plunge in the river at the foot of Whernside he got extremely cold and when Alistair met him coming off he said he looked 90plus, never mind 70plus. He had only a minute to spare at Hill Inn where he donned more dry clothing. From there it was a very slow journey with Al over Ingleborough, so he was only just finishing as the presentation was starting, as that had been brought forward half an hour because of the cold, wet weather. Denise and a few other stalwarts cheered Dave across the finishing line and instead of his usual leisurely change at the car, he was steered somewhat unwillingly into the marquee, where to his bewilderment he was presented with a beautiful glass decanter. He had absolutely no idea! The secret had been well kept and the telephone conversation with Justine later on was quite 6

emotional. Despite a time difference of 7 hours, she'd been up since the early hours following his progress via the live feed and getting very worried towards the end! Certainly a day to remember!! Some club members have been heard urging Dave to make it a round 50!! Oh, no!!!!!!

Covering Old Ground 30 years ago (June 1985) • The Clitheroe Fell Race was cancelled and the Hodder Valley Show FR could suffer a similar fate because of lack of organisers. • Ted Southworth completed the 127 miles of the Leeds – Liverpool canal in 28.5 hours. He reached 100 miles in 20 hours 26 mins. Support included Harry Smith and Ian Beverley amongst others. • Saturday club runs were in danger of falling into oblivion through lack of support.

• The Vets Pennine Way Relay organised by Jack Betney achieved an admirable 48 hours 26 mins. • Don Barton was N. Counties V50 Marathon Champion; Harry Walker won his first race in a Clayton vest – the Colne 10m; Maureen Laney won the Paris Marathon in 2 hours 43mins; and Stan Bradshaw (Jr) won the Fellsman Hike. In the Results: Vanessa Brindle (Peacock) was first Lady in the Roaches race. Karin Taylor (Goss) was first lady in the short race at Edale. In the club Champs – Dave Scott, Donald Bibby & Roger Dewhurst were the first three V40; Don Barton, Bernard Ramsden & Harry Manning V45s; Jack Betney V50; Albert Ashworth V55; and Jack Riley V60.

25 years ago (June 1990) • Don Barton, Club Chairman at the time, featured in this month’s Focus. Don reported his most satisfying run was completing the Bob Graham round in 1978 but his best performance had to be finishing second in the British Vets over 50 marathon in a time of 2.39.14 in 1984. Don said his normal weekly mileage was 45 miles but increased to 80 when training for a race. Don took the view that the number of training sessions was more important than the number of miles. In the Results: Our vets came second to Altrincham in the Manchester to Blackpool Road Relay (16 th overall). In the London Marathon – Graham Cunliffe 2.34.00, Mick Green 2.40.14, John O’Connor 2.43.58, Mick O’Connor 2.45.09, Linda Lord 3.08.58, Brian Leathley 3.20.00, Ray Jones 3.26.08, John Davies 3.46.00, Christine Leathley 3.48.00, Les Jackson 3.55.00, Kitty Garnett 4.11.00, E.Dowling 4.30.00, Judith Cunliffe 4.55.00.

20 years ago (June 1995) • The club relay planned for June led by Don Barton and assisted by Martin Brady published the detail of the legs. Leg 1 - Whalley to Barley 8 miles; Leg 2 – Barley to Barrowford 4 miles Leg 3 – Barrowford to Barnoldswick 7 miles; Leg 4 – Barnoldswick to Laneshawbridge 12 miles; Leg 5 – Laneshawbridge to Nelson Rd golf course 10 miles Leg 6 – Golf course to Newchurch 8 miles; Leg 7 – Newchurch to Sawley 11 miles Leg 8 – Sawley to Slaidburn 9 miles; Leg 9 – Slaidburn to Trough of Bowland 10 miles; Leg 10 – Trough to Chipping 8 miles; Leg 11 – Chipping to Hurst Green 8 miles; Leg 12 – Hurst G to Whalley 5 miles. 10

• The newsletter editor selected Lawrence Sullivan for run of the month for his performance in the Three Peaks. • A Memorial Stone dedicated to the two members who lost their lives in 1994 - Judith Taylor (lost her life in the Kentmere race) and Alan Heywood (died following a disaster on Mont Blanc). The stone was to be placed on Pendle during Tuesday training 4 th July. Contributions to the cost welcomed but any shortfall provided from the Gt. Hameldon Hill Race funds. • The editor wished George Brass a speedy recovery following a recent Op. Clayton were hoping to get funds to help purchase a new timing machine. The Barnoldswick race organiser, Harry Smith, announced this year’s race was celebrating its 25 th anniversary. Linda Lord reported on a wonderful day for the Wadsworth Trog and Paul Healey told the story of the Malham to Hawes run. In the Results: Nothing reported.

15 years ago (June 2000) • Ian Campbell wrote about the progress made following the North of England AA intention to introduce a registration scheme for all club athletes – proposed as £3 to £5 per member. Thirty-three clubs objected as there had been nothing outlined as to how this money would be spent. Following the pressure the N.of E. backed off and came up with a revised proposal. From 1 st May 2000 each member would get a registration number without which you could not enter a championship race and the number would get you discounts from certain retail outlets. The cost was reduced to £1. • Judith Lee reported on her involvement with some help from Clayton friends, in the ‘Pendle Shadow’ route changes which introduced more ‘off road’. • Tina Lewis reported on the Isle of Man Easter Race Festival – three members, Tina, Bob Russell and Alison Smith (Dugdale) journeyed to take part in some of the shorter events whilst other Claytonners tackled the Manx Mountain Marathon – Pete Booth, Pete Browning, Paul Thompson, Lee Thompson. • Run of the month went to Wendy Dodds for her run in the Buttermere Sailbeck (1 st Lady) & Fairfield (first F Vet and 7 th overall). In the results:- The London Marathon results – Mark Brown 2.32; Mick Green 2.51; Mark Burridge 2.52; Martin Bland 3.07; Jason Harbour 3.09; John Rutter 3.26; Pete Hindle 3.38; Kitty Garnett4.02; Rebecca McDevitt 4.32.

10 years ago (June 2005 ) • Richard Lawson reported on the Don Barton 4.2 mile multi-terrain race at Whitworth, dominated by Clayton runners being a tribute to the club President and raising funds for the Everest adventure. • Recent developments linked to insurance cover and the effect on the FRA caused some chaos for the club’s Summer Series – the resulting situation meant we could no longer allow runners from other clubs to take part. • Run of the month went to Dave Scott for completion of his 38 th Three Peaks (36 of which were consecutive). Dave outlined the history to this in the newsletter. He joined Clayton in 1959 and his heroes in the early years were Stan Bradshaw, George Brass, Alan Heaton, and Alistair Patten. • Pete Booth reported on the Manx. Besides himself there was Paul Thompson, Steve Whitaker, Pete Browning, Richard Bellaries, and Geoff Newsam. Despite Pete’s preparation having suffered thro’ injury he managed 17 th in 6.13.32. Peter Butterworth was first V50 in the Dentdale Road Race; Ted Orrell was first V65 in the Garstang Gallop.

5 years ago (June 2010 ) • A Club Relay was planned for July - 1st leg Trail Race; 2 nd leg Cycle Trail Race; 3 rd leg Road Race; 4 th leg Navigation and 5 th leg fell Race. • Bill Smith wrote about the 'passing away' of Stan Bradshaw. Bill reported he had first met Stan on the 1969 Todmorden Boundary Walk. “....about half way round I found myself jogging beside an old man (as he then seemed to me).” Stan commented on Bill's apparent fitness (Bill had been playing Sunday Football all season). But Bill thought the difference was more down to age (his 33 and Stan 57). Bill reported that Stan, and his brother, had built 'Stan's hut' in Stainscomb Clough in 1930 and the wood cost 6 shillings(30p in today's money). • Michael Hogan reported on the British Masters (BMAF) Relays at Sutton Coldfield. “One week to go and received a text message from Jason Harbour asking if everything OK – No probs, I replied....one hour later I was down to 1 x V35 and 4 x V40's....panic.” Following a discussion with John Roche the V35's were scrapped and the V40 team became Paul Shackleton (51st), Dave Edmondson (29 th ), Garry Wilkinson (26th), Jason Harbour (22nd), Steve Green (V50) (17th), Mark Wightman (V50) (20th), Dave Horrocks (18th), Michael Hogan (19th). CALDERDALE WAY RELAY

88 teams of runners lined up to start the 2015 Calderdale Way Relay with Clayton-le-Moors Harriers fielding 4 teams (3 men’s and a ladies’ team). There were some brilliant runs across the teams. A special mention must be made for the remarkable organisational and support skills of Men’s Fell Captain, Dave Motley, who not only kept appearing at each leg to support his runners but went on to run our fastest Leg 5 with Ryan Wilkinson. I think he may have cloned himself to do it! Our Men’s A Team were in third place in the first two legs but began to lose places after that. Despite a set of fast legs the third place spot remained out of reach and their final position was 7th. Our Ladies’ team had managed to finish slightly ahead of their position last year and there were some great runs from the ladies, particularly Anna Kelly and Claire Vincent who stormed through leg 2.

BRITISH MASTERS ROAD RELAYS Sutton Park, Birmingham 16th May

A very early start of 7:00am saw around 40 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers making the journey to the British Masters Road Relays at Sutton Park – Sutton Coldfield – Birmingham.

This is possibly the best road running relay in the calendar. Sutton Park is perfect for this type of event, set inside 2000 acres of beautiful parkland. The course is one lap and quite testing in places with nowhere to hide from spectators encouraging you to keep pushing through the pain barrier.

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers has great history of success at this event and this year would hopefully continue that trend. We had the company of the tangerine army of ladies on tour with most of them attending for the first time and as you would expect the nerves were jangling all morning preparing for the start.

The ladies were first to run, returning with a haul of two team and one individual medal. Later, there were two men’s races: M55-64 & M65-74, followed by the M35-44 & M45-54. Our M55 ‘A’ team just missed out on a bronze medal, despite great performances from Mark Aspinall, John Roche and John Hartley.

It was another fantastic day for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone that made the journey. The weather was sunny as usual …thanks ‘Shack’.

The return journey was a happy one with a few medals and some tremendous individual performances from; Karin Goss, Irene Roche, Mark Aspy (Legend), Dave Naughton to name just a few.

The newbies also had a memorable day with many PB runs (Well done) and wearing our vest with pride in such a prestigious event. My personal thanks to all the last minute ‘stand in’ runners.

Garry Wilkinson said: ‘Always a fantastic day and a chance to run against the best of the best. It’s only a short distance but with the adrenaline and pushing yourself to the limits, this is the hardest type of racing and you need to be mentally tough to succeed’ .

JUNIOR TRAINING

DON’T FORGET TO KEEP CHECKING THE TRAINING CALENDAR FOR LAST MINUTE CHANGES

Age Limits for Training Sessions; There’s no minimum age limit to be a junior member of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers (although the minimum age to compete in a fell race is six years on race day). However, we have decided to apply a minimum age to attend the coached training sessions. Juniors must be in school year 5 or above . This applies only to new recruits not to those already attending. The main reason for this change is that most juniors below this age limit struggle to maintain a reasonable focus during structured coaching (especially endurance work) and gain little from the session. We appreciate that there are exceptions to this however, they are fairly rare.

The sessions THURSDAY: 6.00pm from Spirit of Sport, Ormerod Rd, Burnley, BB10 3AA. This is a speed and agility class; run indoors in bad weather during winter, moving outdoors in spring and summer. Younger runners will be involved in structured sessions in the sports hall or the nearby parks, older runners will always be outdoors, either on the fields of the nearby parks or on the pavement of the surrounding roads. It’s an excellent session for improving race speed and stamina and is recommended for all. Cost £2, this includes access to the sports hall and to the sports centre facilities. TUESDAY : A more advanced Fell based session which is operated by ‘invitation only’ during the spring/summer for more capable runners, from a rolling venue in the Burnley/Pendle area. The aim is to build endurance and technique on tougher terrain.

Tuesday Summer Training Venues April-September 2015

The format of our summer training sessions for this year will be similar to last year’s. On Tuesday evening, throughout the summer, fell training will follow the usual format of group runs (group according to ability/inclination/level of fitness) from the following venues, at the time stated:

Date Time Venue

2, 9*, 16, 23, 30 June 6.30pm Village Square, Worsthorne

7, 14, 21*, 28 July 6.30pm Calf’s Head Hotel, Worston

4, 11, 18, 25* August 6.30pm Peel Park Hotel, Accrington

1,8*, 15, 22, 29 September 6.30pm Bridge Inn, Barrowford

* Summer Series Race—see p31 for details.

All members are welcome to take part in the Tuesday Fell Runs, The usual arrangement is for 2/3 groups to run from each venue for between one and two hours, although this can vary according to numbers, weather and what members have done at the weekend.

If you are new to the Club’s summer training runs/fell running, please make your- self known to a Committee member or group leader before the run and we will attempt to place you in the most appropriate group.

All members should ensure that they carry some emergency/extra clothing with them on the run: wind (water)-proof top, over trousers, hat and gloves. The weather can change very quickly on the fells. If you, or someone else in the group has an accident, you can very quickly become cold or hypothermic, even on the most pleasant of evenings. It’s also a good idea to carry a drink and some emergency food (sweets, chocolate bar), in case you are out longer than you expect—it has been known for a group leader to get carried away occasionally.
