PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Chairperson’s Report 2018-2019 The 2018-2019 year has been a progressive year for our organization and our members. I would like to acknowledge our School Sport Coordinator, Phil Bridges, for developing and implementing many changes over the past year to enable the PEISAA to operate more effectively and efficiently. I would also like to give praise to the PEISAA Executive as they provided their guidance and support over the year by putting our student- as a top priority. Finally, our member schools, thank you for your patience and understanding as much needed changes have been in the works for the past 2 years. The 2018-2019 school year started with two much-needed changes. First, our website was switched over to Goaline. Prior to the changeover, our member schools have brought forth many complaints regarding our previous web site as it was becoming cumbersome for them to perform basic tasks on it (ex. Entering scores on the website). Also, the previous website has been a financial burden since costly upgrades were needed to successfully secure and modernize our backend platform. For the past year, the PEISAA has received nothing but positive feedback from our new website. Second, an overhaul on our Policy and Procedures manual has been completed and implemented at the start of the school year. This was a big project for the PEISAA and was much needed. Throughout the review, some policies and procedures were either outdated or not needed. Also, the PEISAA added additional policies and procedures to reflect common situations our member schools are now encountering. As previously mentioned, this year has been very progressive. The PEISAA completed a trial sport of boy’s ball hockey for senior high schools. As a trial sport, 4 high schools (Westisle, Evangeline, TOSH, and Montague) were asked to participate and next year the PEISAA Executive will review the pilot sport to determine the status of senior high boy’s ball hockey. Thank-you to Phil Bridges in overseeing this pilot. Also, the PEISAA is currently working with PEI Special Olympians to potentially bring the sport of bocce into our PEISAA calendar of play. Finally, the PEISAA has been financially stable this year mainly due to the continued effort in reaching out to our corporate sponsors and revenue being brought in from our PEISAA Championship games. In doing so, we can keep our memberships fees reasonable along with investing in services or products that will have a direct impact on our student-athletes while participating in PEISAA events. Again, thank you to everyone who had a direct impact on our student athletes this 2018-2019 school year.

Trent Ranahan 2018-2019 PEISAA Chair

4. GENERAL COMMENTS  This season of Senior Men’s Baseball went well. The weather was not as cooperative as in the past few years, forcing a lot of rescheduling. That being said, I have to commend all of the schools on their patience, flexibility and understanding. There were no complaints heard by me, and everybody was very accommodating. I have nothing but respect for the ADs and coaches I worked with this year. Also, Phil was excellent to work with for the PEISAA. Weather was really the only issue and you can’t control that. A very successful year in my opinion.  The top four teams – Westisle, Montague, TOSH and Bluefield – were all very strong and could beat each other on any given day. Despite TOSH and Bluefield finishing higher in regular season standings, both lost in semifinals. Montague defeated Westisle in the regular season, but Westisle defeated Montague in the final. When it came to those top four teams, it was a great league. Colonel Gray and Charlottetown Rural were the two weakest teams. In theory, they have some of the best ballplayers in the province in their schools, but don’t seem to have the coaching or organization of the other four squads. It’s too bad – this league could be one of the best, in terms of competition, in all of the PEISAA.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

A rainy fall made for a challenging season trying to get make up games played. As the season stretched on, hockey became an issue to contend with, eventually forcing East Wiltshire to withdraw from provincials.

Thank you to Mike Richards, the officials assignor who was always able to go with the flow when dealing with the constant schedule changes.

Thank you to Christopher Drummond and his city field crews who did everything possible to have playable fields during a very wet fall.

1. SPORT PARTICIPATION NUMBERS Male 12 teams (down 2 from last year) and approximately 205 players Female 12 teams (down 1 from last year) and approximately 205 players. We had 6 AAA Male teams, 5 AAA Female teams, and 6 A Male teams and 7 A Female teams.

2. GENERAL COMMENTS The 2018 Fall Soccer Season was very entertaining and each division had its share of competitiveness. At the end of the season, every league had three or four teams within a few points from each other. Game reporting has improved once again this year as the introduction of the Goal Line web site was launched. This is the first year I did not have to send texts and emails to find out scores from the night before – Thanks. Once again, there were games the Friday before the season was complete (even though it was discouraged), making for a scramble over the weekend to get teams to where they needed to be. On a positive note, the AAA Men had major implications of 3 of the 6 teams because of that one game, making the league very competitive. Thanks goes out to our sponsors, The Department of Education, Early Learning, and Culture, The PEI School Milk Foundation, and Eastlink. A big thanks goes out to Phil Bridges, the School Sport Coordinator for all his help throughout the season and getting the Goal Line Web Site up and running. I want to commend Cory Deagle and Trevor Bridges for their tireless work assigning referees to the games, which have to be played at awkward times due to the availability of light. I believe we have a better product on the field over the past couple years because we implemented the two-man system into AAA games (when we had the availability). This has resulted in a significant decrease in cards, and therefore suspensions (only two island players were suspended). I

would like to have a better way to report cards, other than faxing me the game sheets, as I don’t believe I was informed of all cards assessed.

Below is a summary of the medal games. Followed by the standings and play-off matchups and scores. Senior Soccer Bronze Medal Games – October 27, 2018 On Saturday, October 27, 2018, the Senior soccer finals for the PEI School Athletic Association took place at the Terry Fox Complex Turf Fields. Games began at 9:00 am under sunny skies, low winds, and cool weather with the temperature hoovering around freezing. The A Women from KISH (#2) and Charlottetown Rural (#4), the two teams that met a year earlier for gold, competed for bronze. KISH took the lead in the 8th minute of the game off the foot of Emma Arsenault to beat Rural keeper, Jamie MacAulay. Both teams exchanged chances throughout the remainder of the game, however, KISH keeper Kylie MacLellan was able to keep Rural off the scoresheet for the 1-0 shutout win, and the Bronze Medal. In the 11:00, A Men’s Bronze Medal game, Rural came out fast and scored in the 4th minute, off a shot by Owen Matheson as he scored his first goal, beating the KISH keeper, Jordan Haslam. Rural continued to press throughout the half, but still only held a one goal lead heading into the break. The second half was similar to the first with Rural continuing to press KISH. The continued pressure paid off as Joe Crisostomo scored in the 80th minute, followed by Matheson with his second, at the 81st minute, and Owen Arnette rounded out the scoring at the 90th Minute. The 1:00 AAA Women’s game between the #3 Westisle and # 5 Col. Gray teams featured a tightly played game. The teams played a defensive – minded game. It was Westisle who was able to capitalize first as Col. Gray deflected the ball into their own net at the 45th minute to finish out the first half up a goal. 13 minutes into the second half, Westisle built on their lead, as Megan Kinch converted at the 58th minute mark. Again the teams exchanged chances, but played mostly defensive. Col. Gray’s unfortunate luck finished the game with another own goal at the 90th minute mark, securing the Bronze Medal for Westisle. The AAA Men’s Bronze Medal game pitted #2 Col. Gray against #4 Bluefield. Col. Gray wanted to avenge their defeat in penalty kicks from last year’s Gold Medal game, that Bluefield won. The game had several chances by both teams, but the keepers, Isaac Wolters of Bluefield and Col. Gray’s, Luke Clark were up to the task. At the 34th minute mark, Col. Gray broke the deadlock as Sam Akinsolo scored the first of his two goals to take the Colonels up one at the half. Just 3 minutes into the second half, Akinsolo scored his second to put the Colonels up 2-0 and the Gray men were in control. Bluefield would not roll over and die as they stormed back just 2 minutes later as Zach Wilson used his speed to get past the defenders and score his first of two goals. As time was winding down, Wilson converted another shot with only 5 minutes left on the clock. At the break between regulation and overtime, the coaches agreed to go straight to penalty kicks, which proved to favour the Colonels. The Colonel’s kickers were very accurate with their kicks as they did not miss, and Luke Clark was spectacular as he made two saves to secure the bronze medal.

Senior Soccer Gold Medal Games In the Senior Women’s A Finals, the two teams that competed for Bronze in 2017, were at it again this year for a different color medal. The #1 seed Montague met the #3 seed Morell. The game was well played by both teams, but Montague’s Braylan MacEachern scored in the 23rd minute to take the lead. Montague would connect again at the 42nd minute off the foot of Lacey White who beat Morell’s keeper,

Emily Sanderson, to take a 2-0 lead into the half time break. The second half saw Morell lose a bit of steam defensively as they pressed for goals and Krista Kovenberg of Montague capitalized and made it 3- 0. White would score her second of the game just four minutes later. Montague’s keeper, Maddie Cooper would maintain the shutout to seal the Gold Medal for the Montague Vikings. In the Men’s A Final, the #1 Souris, would play their Kings County rival #3 Morell. This was a very entertaining game as the play was back and forth all 90 minutes. Morell’s Jesse McGrath was able to beat Souris’ keeper, Jacob MacPhee in the 24th minute. Both teams pushed for goals for the rest of the half, but to no avail. Souris came out fast in the second half and were rewarded early when Ben MacIsaac beat Morell’s keeper, Nic Studzinski in the 47th minute. The teams continued to play back and forth as they played an aggressive and skilled game. In the 72nd minute, Morell’s Thomas Craig undressed a couple Spartan defenders and tucked a nice shot low on the left side of the net for the eventual winning goal. The game continued to be entertaining as the teams did not let up until the final whistle. In the Women’s AAA Gold Medal game, #1 TOSH and #2 Charlottetown Rural played a very skilled game that was dominated by defense. The first half saw a few chances by both teams but both keepers, Rural’s Maci Lynn Ross and Three Oaks’ Kyrsten Coyle were up to the task and kept the score tied at 0. In the second half, Three Oaks did most of the defending as Rural did most of the attacking. Rural had two excellent chances late in the game to put the game away and claim the gold medal, however, both chances were squandered and the game was forced to go to overtime. In overtime, Rural continued to push for the winner, but were unsuccessful until the first minute of the second overtime, when Mia Fradsham converted a nice pass into the top corner of the TOSH net just out of Coyle’s reach. Fradsham’s goal stood up to be the winner and Rural were able to retain their Provincial Banner. The Senior AAA Men’s game saw #1 Westisle Wolverines play the #3 Charlottetown Rural Raiders playing for gold. Westisle’s Hayden Porter was tested often in the net but was equal to the task on several occasions. Rural continued to press and were rewarded with a goal at the 34th minute by Mathias McComb and another by Liam Jinks at the 40th minute. Rural was up by two at the half. In the second half, Rural scored only 7 minutes after the break to go up 3 – 0 on a goal by Riad Jaha. Westisle tried hard to get back into the game, but Rural continued to dominate the game. Westisle pushed hard late in the game and were rewarded with a goal by Ethan Oliver off a free kick at the 84th minute to make it 3-1.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This was a challenging year for soccer in the East. Thank you to all coaches, Athletic Directors and our referee assignor Cory Deagle for patience and flexibility in dealing with what seemed to be constant changes throughout the season.

This was the Mount’s first year in our league and it added another team to our AA boys division. There were a few issues related to this that will be addressed in the recommendations section.

I think that aside from some scheduling issues, the leagues were all quite competitive and reasonably well balanced.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: 2018 intermediate and high school field hockey had excellent weather for league play. Only one day of the league play was cancelled due to rain and those three games were difficult to reschedule. The fall schedule is very tight in the number of playing days available. Most days had double headers in Cornwall plus at the same time a double header in Montague (Wednesdays) and Summeride (Thursdays). An intermediate mini league tournament on Sept 29 in Summerside and high school mini league tournament on Sept 22 in Cornwall both helped to relieve the tight schedule. The two mini tournaments and double header days we were able to play all but two games. Again this season I scheduled both intermediate and high school games (double header) at TOSH and Montague. This cut the cost of umpire travel fees in half for Montague and finally we had enough umpires in Summerside therefore Tosh and SIS eliminating umpire travel cost. The mini tournament held in Cornwall is a great idea as Tosh/ SIS and Montague Intermediate/ High school will travel to Cornwall to play their home/away home against each other…..this saves travel cost/time of Tosh/SIS to Montague schools and Montague schools to Tosh/ SIS.

FHC had changed four rules for 2015 and these rules have greatly improved play however the fourth rule of playing the ball in the air above the shoulders will not be added due to safety of players. We will continue to exclude this rule for safety. Thank you to Cornwall, Summerside CG turf for allowing field hockey the time to use the turf. Cornwall had requested new mesh netting for the two goals at Cornwall turf (replaced in 2016 for $340) and this 2017 season the goal boards were replaced ($250) PEIFHA bought this equipment for Cornwall. Welcome to The Mount High School team placing 2nd in 2018 league play and then winning the Silver medal at PEISAA Provincial Field Hockey Championships . Birchwood Intermediate School second year in PEIFHA league had 26 players trying out for their team !!!! PEIFHA will continue to introduce field hockey to grades 4,5, 6 ( through PEIFHA Project 1 and Project 2 ) in hope that all intermediate schools will have lots of players. Thank you to all the coaches and umpires for their hard work!

4. GENERAL COMMENTS a) The 2018 AAA and A seasons ran very smoothly with very good game reporting. There were a few game times that had to be moved due to bussing issues and a shortage of officials. The new GOALLINE website helped things to run smoothly as it kept track of standings and tie breakers.

b) The A/AAA Championships were held at Charlottetown Rural this year. Thank you to Esther Hoving and her leadership team for running two first class tournaments. The top A and AAA teams played very good volleyball and the top 4 teams in each division were evenly matched. Having the championships in the schools worked very well and I propose that we run the AAA Championships in the schools again next year.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

. I would like to thank all coaches and officials. We had another great year and the cooperation and effort from everyone was excellent. . A big thanks to Rob Connell (AA Girls and AA Boys), Lincoln Rix & Kelly Gorrill (A Boys) and Karen Aucoin-Smith (A Girls) for doing such a great job in hosting the Provincials. . Super thanks to Jeff Hirtle and Joe Ryan for doing a great job with the officials. It was a trying season with a lack of officials. Both gentlemen did an outstanding job in juggling games and insured that all matches were completed. . A great year in reporting results. Most of the results were posted on the website each night. . I believe that we should have the east and the west schools meet together for the scheduling meeting at the beginning of the year. We have more island-wide leagues and meeting together would help facilitate this process. . A final congratulation to the following provincial champions: Souris (A girls), Hernewood (A boys), Stonepark (AA girls) and Queen Charlotte (AA boys).

4. General Comments The Pre Novice - Intermediate Cross Country season ended with the 2018 Source for Sports Provincial Cross Country Championship at Mill Rive Park. The Westisle Family of Schools hosted the Pre- Novice to Intermediate Championships while Rural High hosted the Juvenile to Senior events at Rural High.

The weather did cooperate at Mill River this year with an overcast day and good temperatures. A total of 644 runners ran the four different competitive courses. This was a decrease of 17 runners from last year. The Juvenile /Senior Championships were held at Charlottetown Rural High

School on Tuesday, October 16th. The meet manager was Esther Hovingh. A total of 139 runners ran the 2 courses in very windy and cold weather. There was confusion due to many zone, students were dismissed at 12:30. Some schools didn’t make the trip thinking the meet was postponed. The overall PEISAA Provincial Championship participation was 783 runners. This was a decrease of 14 runners from last year’s total participation numbers. The Mill River course is a very spectator friendly site. The last 1 km in all our races can be seen by coaches and parents. The schedule had the Bantam and Intermediate categories compete first in the morning and the Novice and Pre Novice categories competed in the afternoon. All started on time and finished on time. The awards were presented after each race. I would like to thank Andy Doran for helping with announcing the presentation of awards. Trent Ranahan and our School Sport Coordinator Phil Bridges PEISAA School Sport Coordinator were on hand to help with present awards to runners. The results were sent to the Journal, Guardian and also the West Prince Graphic from both provincials. I also sent the results Phil Bridges to post on the SAA web site. Thank you so much to all the teachers from the Westisle Family of schools. Special thanks to Matthew Morgan, Lincoln Rix and Esther Hovingh for their help, along with the leadership students from Hernewood Intermediate High and M E Callaghan Jr. High and Charlottetown Rural. The success of our championship is directly related to the responsible work done by these students and their teachers. Thank you so much. At the Mill River Resort Park site we made an extra effort around the start line and finish line to make visible the Source for Sports Logo, our meet sponsor. The Juvenile and Senior Championship was also a great success. Meet manager Esther Hovingh was very pleased with the races and the quality of the 3.5 km and 5.0 km courses. Some schools didn’t make it to the championship due to confusion on early dismissal of schools. The success of both competitions wouldn’t be possible without the help of so many teachers. Thank you to all the schools and coaches that make a real effort in sending us accurate registration numbers. Thanks to all the zone reps. for making sure all zone managers received the proper provincial information. There was very little change and all zone results were clear. I would also like to say thank you to all the unit managers and volunteers for their efforts and commitment in making our SAA Provincial a great success. Special thanks for the PEI School Milk Foundation for their continued support and for providing chocolate milk for all the competitors, Dwayne MacNeill of Source for Sports for his involvement in our cross country event, and to Blair Duggan and staff of the Mill River Resort. Thank you also to Phil Bridges who stayed there all day. Wireless PA system was a great success, best investment for cross country, thank you Phil. Your help is very much appreciated. A word of thanks goes out to Brian Allain, our official scorer, who puts in countless hours preparing the registration of all runners and taking care of the results year after year. It is a real honor to host this event.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

The 2018-19 Senior High golf qualifying season was blessed with wonderful weather that facilitated a full slate of qualifying tournaments within the short season.. The qualifying tournament schedule was given to schools in June and the advanced notice did allow the schools to plan their qualification schedules. Qualifying tournaments were held at Avondale, Ocean View, Mill River, Eagles Glenn and Fox Meadow. Thanks to Alan McAlduff, Gordie Cox and Greg Ellis for hosting their qualifiers. Commissioners Garth Turtle and Wayne Denman provided the secretarial work needed to facilitate all the tournaments. The championship qualification format continues to effectively identify the strongest golfers and resulted in 52 men and 18 women qualifying for the championship. The championship was hosted at the Brudenell River Golf Course and the facility was again provided free of charge. Unfortunately rain caused the tournament to be shortened to 9 holes, coaches must be thanked for the proactive approach they took to the change in format. The golf course staff must be thanked for the terrific work they did to help facilitate the championship, they went out of their way to make the coaches and student athletes feel welcomed. Thanks to all the coaches for the time they put into this year’s golf season as well as Phil Bridges at the PEISAA office..

4. GENERAL COMMENTS Thanks to the Zone reps for facilitating each of the Zone qualifying tournaments. The weather , although not terrible, did pose problems for late September qualifiers. Scheduling these tournaments a little earlier would take the pressure off and potentially, allow the students to play on a better day. Thanks to Chris Croken and the staff at Eagles Glenn for providing such a great venue and to Phil Bridges for all his support.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the intermediate east and west basketball leagues continued with the implementation of a no zone rule. This included a no zone press rule. There was still some direction needed by the two commissioners in the beginning of the year. I believe that most teams have adapted well to this concept and problems arise not intentionally but out of a player needing direction on being out of place. In the A level, this tends to me the case most of the time.

This year we had an AA west boys but only a AA East girls. Every year we need to look to see if this is possible. Some years there is a need for exhibition games between the east and west and in some years there may be the need for an Island wide league. Every year comes with new challenges to make sure we do what is best for Intermediate Basketball.

The A league both the east and west are growing in numbers of teams and players. They have played in their own leagues since they started their leagues and this should continue. There is no need for any Island wide leagues as there is enough teams for viable leagues in the east and the west.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the Intermediate East and West basketball leagues continued with the implementation of a no zone rule. This included a no zone press rule. With the exception of one team, the west teams did a very good job with the no zone rule. It seems that coaches have bought in and are working with us to implement the rule.

We had a group meet before the season began and decided to put a formal 20 point rule into the league. In the past it has been an unwritten rule that if a team was up by 20 points, then they would fall back and play half court defense. It is now a rule and the referees can and do enforce the rule.

For the second year in a row we only had one AA girls’ team in the west that wanted to play AA. Therefore, the Summerside Intermediate Girls went into the East AA girls’ league. This made for a larger than normal A girls league. MEC, Herenwood, Athena and KISH who normally go AA went A. The A league went fine with 10 teams playing. It looks like next year we should be back to an AA West girl’s league with at least 3 teams.

4. General Comments The 2019 school gymnastics season ended on Saturday, February 9th with the PEI School Athletic Association Provincial Gymnastics Championship at the Kensington Intermediate Senior High School. The championship was hosted by the St. Louis Elementary School. Provincial team titles: Pre-Novice Boys- Spring Park Elementary, Pre-Novice Girls L M Montgomery Elementary, Novice Boys LM Montgomery Elementary, Novice Girls LM Montgomery Elementary ,Bantam Girls Summerside Intermediate, Intermediate Girls Montague Intermediate. Individual awards were also given to the top six vault /floor routines and top ten all around. A total of 295 gymnasts participated at this year’s event. This was a decrease of 19 gymnasts from last year. The biggest decrease was Pre Novice Boys 6. We had a total of 26 different schools from across PEI participate including 1 new schools, École Saint Augustin. On Saturday morning the competition started at 9:00 am and finished ahead of time. A total of 131 gymnasts participated with 88 Pre-Novice Girls and 43 Pre-Novice Boys. Decrease of 9 gymnasts from last year. On Saturday afternoon, another big crowd watched 121 gymnasts perform in the Novice boys and Novice girl’s categories, (Novice boys 37 and 84 Novice girls). Decrease of 7 gymnasts from last year. This competition finished 30 minutes over the schedule time. The late afternoon competition had a total of 43 gymnasts participate in Bantam Boys/ Girls, and Intermediate Boys/Girls and Senior categories, 4 Bantam Boys, 27 Bantam Girls,11 Intermediate Girls and 1 Intermediate Boy. This was a decrease of 4 from last year. For the third year in a row all 9 categories performed a Jump to Handspring onto a raised mat surface; fall to straight lying position on the back. Pre Novice 28” high and the Novice to Senior 36” Some school are still having challenges getting mats to reach the 36” height at their schools. It still remains the safest vault to perform for our school athletes. The SAA also gave out the new ribbons this year and the coaches were pleased that all athletes receiving ribbons went home with their awards. We had a few ties for medals but we were able to use leftover from another category. All information and results were posted in the Guardian and the Journal. The media coverage before and after was good. All results were circulated to all the media, schools and on our SAA website within days of our championship. We had a total of 461 paid spectators. This was a decrease of 33 from last year total. We also charged $ 3.00 admission with no apparent complaints from spectators.

Our computer program which calculated the results came through for us again. Within minutes of the end of both competitions, the results were handed out. I would like to thank Brian Alain once again for helping us with the results and registration. I would like to say a special thank you to Phil Bridges our new SAA School Sport Coordinator for his great support leading up to the championship and all day Saturday at KISH. He stayed all day and helped out with the awards and PR for the SAA. ADL was announced several times as our new Title Sponsor for Gymnastics at the competition site and in our news release. The papers decided to cut out the ADL name in the provincial title in my write up. I would also like to thank Principal Donald Mulligan and Jonathon McAvinn for all their help and continuous support. Thank you for allowing us to use your fine facility to host our Provincial Championship. It is very much appreciated. Also that you to Rob Connell for his continuous help with securing our custodians for Saturday. We can’t forget PEI School milk Foundation for their continuous support and of course for the free chocolate milk for all the competitors. Thank you to all the Unit managers for hosting their own zone competitions and sending me all the results on time. It was greatly appreciated. It’s always a pleasure to work with such dedicated professionals. Great job!

2018-19 PEISAA Wrestling Final Commissioner’s Report

Commissioner – Megan Morrison

1. General Comments The 2019 PEISAA Wrestling Championships were held on Saturday, April 27th at Birchwood. The venue was ideal. A switch was made to have the event on one day and it worked out very well. The on-mat official situation was strong and matches ran smoothly, without issue. The officials went out of their way to ensure the athletes were safe and interacted w/ the athletes, allowing them to feel at ease. One again, there were no injuries that we were made aware of. Sports Centre Physio continues to provide top notch care each year. Our minor officials, score keepers, timers and hosts allowed for a very smoothly run event. Volunteers run this sport and, as commissioner and coach, I can’t thank them enough. I was very pleased with the flow of the event in our new venue this year at Birchwood. With one mat being housed already at Birchwood and one close by at Colonel Gray, the set up / tear down was quite easy. Participation numbers at the intermediate stayed about the same. We had no Senior High athletes. We hoped to have Gulf Shore back this year but that didn’t happen. There continues to be a keen interest in developing a Pre-Novice division and including them at an age appropriate level of competition in PEISAA competition. Coaches did an excellent job of communicating w/ me re: athletes who would not be able to attend provincials in advance; however, there were too many no-shows with no notice. This causes a great deal of stress for the drawmaster. There was a slight delay for the afternoon session, as the notice was only given a few minutes before the tournament was set to start. The biggest change this year was switching from weight classes to grouped weights. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The main challenge is for the draw – because groupings are very intentionally made, if someone doesn’t show up, it’s possible their opponent could be grouped elsewhere, but that is not possible to do at the last minute. The biggest challenge continues to be developing the Intermediate / senior high school category. Having a teacher / coach w/in the school seems to determine the longevity and success of a program and helps to retain athletes. Athena and Birchwood have become large, strong teams. Unfortunately, when that

teacher leaves the school, the program stops. Wrestlers from Summerside and Montague continued on with their season and competed in the East Wrestling Festival, which was held in Orillia, ON.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

The spring of 2019 was yet another successful rugby season on PEI. Male and female student- athletes from across the Island competed in both the A and AAA divisions. Players, coaches, referees, and Athletic directors put in hours of hard work to produce some of the highest caliber junior rugby in our region. A special thank you goes to Phil Bridges, School Sport Coordinator, for his front line support and administrative guidance this year. Also, thank you to Anthony Scott, as Referee Assignor. Another thank you goes to the UPEI Athletic Department – specifically Stephanie Knickle-Currie, Leigh Read, and Chris Huggan - for allowing us to host all our championships at their site. Thank you to Walter MacEwen, as well, for his work to keep the PEISAA website updated, the submission of scores to media outlets, and the determination of league all stars. There are many other people who are very important to the continued success of high school rugby on PEI and I thank them as well. Prior to the first games this year, we had a series of learning sessions that were implemented. A level 1 coaching course was put on by the PEI in conjunction with Rugby Canada. This was attended by over 20 of our coaches! Secondly, our coaches were required to complete two online training modules: World Rugby’s Rugby Ready and NCCP’s Making Headway. Lastly, we had a mandatory Safe Rugby session for our coaches. During these sessions, we had a presentation on concussions by Kyle Robertson from UPEI’s Concussion Awareness Program. We had 53 coaches attend this session and complete the online training. This season, we made a change in our A league by switching from 8s to 7s. This was done so as to align or league with World Rugby (7s is played all across the world, 8s is not played anywhere else). The change was made fairly seamless with the help of our coaches and referees. As with every other year, the change in the on-field product from the first games to the last games was incredible. The major advancements the players make in skill, teamwork, and understand is very impressive. I continue to be very pleased with our use of the A league as a development league. With rugby being a contact sport, I feel it is important to have a lot of space for the players to use. This space allows coaches and referees to

focus on sportsmanship and safety because there are fewer contact situations per game that the 15s version. Both A leagues were quite competitive all season. In the A women’s final, Colonel Gray beat Colonel Gray by a single try. In the men’s final, for possibly the first time ever, we had an all-Bluefield final where Bluefield 2 beat Bluefield 1. In our women’s AA game, Colonel Gray got their first win of the season with a win over Westisle. In the AA men’s game, Westisle held off a much-improved Montague side. In the AAA women’s league, Three Oaks and Charlottetown Rural were both dominant, which led to a fantastic championship where Charlottetown Rural won by a single point after scoring a penalty kick with two minutes remaining. The AAA men’s division had 5 highly competitive teams this year. The final came right down to the wire with Three Oaks winning by 3 points on the final play of the game. As a final comment, I would like to thank the Department of Education and the PEISAA for continuing to support high school rugby. With the temporary removal or rugby from the high schools in Nova Scotia this spring, it was very nice to have the support of our governing bodies. Rugby is a sport that is empowering and exciting. It is welcoming to people from all walks of life and I am always happy to be a part of PEI rugby. Thank you to everyone for your continued work to make high school rugby a success.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: The 2018-198 school softball season was again effected by the weather, cold temperatures as well as lots of rain caused some postponed games. School Athletic Directors and coaches are to be commended for the proactive approach they took in rescheduling games, however there were several games that were not played and forfeited instead. This is not the preferred method of settling game results. Championship day at Slemon Park was a great day for ball. Thanks to the City of Summerside for preparing the fields and to Sue Thompson for acting as tournament manager. Both medal games were welled played with Queen Charlotte defeating Stonepark to retain the Provincial Championship. There were a total of nine teams competing in east and west divisions. Thanks to Phil Bridges for his administrative and organizational help and to the School Milk Foundation for providing the chocolate milk..

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: 2018-19 school softball began the season with 10 teams in two divisions, unfortunately Souris had to leave the league, but teams maintained their home and away schedule. This new format doubled the number of games played by the league’s teams, allowing for a much better experience for the student athletes. School Athletic Directors and coaches are to be commended for the proactive approach they took in completing as many games as possible.. The Provincial Women`s Championships were held at Slemon Park. Thanks to the City of Summerside for preparing the fields. Westisle girls defeated Colonel Gray in a very well played final. Cross over quarter finals helped to insure that the best teams went to the finals in Slemon Park. Thanks to Phil Bridges for his administrative and organizational help.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

A rainy fall made for a challenging season trying to get make up games played. As the season stretched on, hockey became an issue to contend with, eventually forcing East Wiltshire to withdraw from provincials.

Two Friday/Saturday jamborees would help to condense the season, simplify scheduling and help to avoid conflicts with soccer and volleyball. Provincials could be held on a Saturday as well, with semis and both gold and bronze medal games.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the East and West flag football leagues continued with an A/AA league in both boys and girls. We had 21 schools take part in the league this year. 12 in the West and 9 in the East. Games continued to be played on Tuesday/Wednesday in the West (one Monday to finish off the schedule) and Monday to Thursday (one Friday) in the East. The East did use two fields at Francois Buote this year to help with scheduling. The flexibility was needed as there seems to be many more obstacles in making a schedule each year. There are very few extra time slots in the East and in the West once the schedules are made. We also sometimes struggle with getting enough qualified referee’s for every game. This year there were 66 flag football teams playing Flag Football and 650 players.
