  • HISTORIOGRAPHY, SEARCH for DEFINITIONS, RESEARCH MODEL Vytautas Volungevičius
LITHUANIAN historical STUDIES 17 2012 ISSN 1392-2343 PP. 1–38 THE CASTLE IN THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA: HISTORIOGRAPHY, SEARCH FOR DEFINITIONS, RESEARCH MODEL Vytautas Volungevičius ABSTRACT This article aims to reinterpret the castle in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, at the same time as evaluating the state of historiography and trends in terminology used in historical sources. Historiographical problems are defined from a comparative perspective. The author empha- sises interpretational issues which refer to the word ‘castle’ in different languages used in different sources. The newly formulated definition of the castle as a changing historical phenomenon expands the concept of the castle. This signifies that the castle was not a static subject. The castle is therefore perceived as an integral part of the historical social reality. This idea is based on certain material and socio-political assumptions. In theory, the castle is understood as an object of structures and social history, research into which should embrace different aspects of social reality: judicial, military-defensive, political-representational, economic- household. The proposed quaternary model of the research (1. The castle and its internal structure; 2. The castle and its external structure; 3. The particularity of the castles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; 4. The disper- sion of castles in the territory of the state) presupposes the multi-layered perspective of the phenomenon of the castle, which guides from fact to process, from object to structure. The article states that the castle as a long time phenomenon cannot be perceived and interpreted separately from simultaneous socio-political circumstances which were formed by the local society.

Abstract: Th is article presents basic statistical data illustrating changes in the nationality composition of Vilnius over the course of history. Th e discussed material allows us to take a position in the post-First World War Polish–Lithuanian dispute on the state affi liation of the city. Słowa kluczowe: historia Wilna, skład narodowościowy Wilna, stosunki polsko-litewskie Keywords: history of Vilnius, nationality composition of Vilnius, Polish–Lithuanian relations Th e Polish–Lithuanian dispute over Vilnius, which persisted for almost the entire interbellum,1 infl amed the emotions of citizens of both states. Th e long-lasting discussions and polemics through which the parties attempted to give grounds to their claims and justify the right to incorporate the city within the boundaries of either state ultimately led to distorting the image of the object of dispute. Th e question that began to be asked was whether Vilnius was Polish or Lithuanian. In this way, the city was stripped of what constituted its peculiar and exceptional character, the considerable variety of intermingling cultures and faiths. * 1 Th e establishment of diplomatic relations, forced by Poland by the ultimatum of 17 March 1938, did not fully resolve this question.

  • POLISH ROYAL ANCESTRY Book 2– Jagiellon Dynasty (1400 - 1800)
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY POLISH ROYAL ANCESTRY Book 2– Jagiellon Dynasty (1400 - 1800) INTRODUCTION Book 1 ended with Saint Hedwig (Jadwiga) Queen of Poland, who died without a heir. This Book 2 begins with her husband, Jogaila Wladyslaw II Jagiello King of Poland, and continues with his descendants by his second wife. He is not a direct ancestor for us but we have common ancestors. Two common lineages, one from Vladimir II "Monomach" Grand Duke of Kiev (26th great grand father), and the other from Erik X Knutsson King of Sweden (22nd great grand father) are listed and their descendants are described in this book. These descendants are our cousins. They include nearly all Polish rulers during this time period and information about those who is included in this book are highlighted in the listings. Some others were ruling Poland for shorter periods, but they are likely not related to us and thus not included. Historically this is a period mostly involved with wars. As Poland is situated in the middle of Europe its neighbors have always tried to occupy and take away land from Poland. These included also our Swedish royal relatives. In some cases the Polish kings were descendants of Swedish kings, in other cases both Poland and Sweden/Finland were ruled by a common king and queen. One such example were, as titled in Finland, John III King of Sweden Duke of Finland and Catherine Jagellon Duchess of Finland, who for extended times lived in Finland. Poland was finally divided up in 1795 among Russia, Germany and Austria during the reign of Frederick Augustus I, the last King of Poland described here It was not recognized at separate country until 1918 after what was then called the Great War.
