Four separate areas were set up based on age groups, and everyone left with eggs in their basket. The eggs were gone in less than 15 minutes! Those who were lucky found golden eggs which had a ticket for a basket provided by our sponsors. VERTEBRATE Animals with backbones (vertebrates) fall into several classes. We all recognize feathered birds and hairy mammals. But what is a reptile? An easy defini- tion of reptiles is that they are terrestrial, vertebrate animals with scales or plates covering the body. However, this definition simplifies their great diversity. WITH SCALES In Texas alone, there are four major groups of reptiles: lizards, snakes, turtles, and crocodilians (alligators). Hardberger Park is home to lizards, snakes, and turtles. OR PLATES Common lizards of the park include the Rosebelly Lizard, Texas Spiny Lizard, and Ground Skink. Common snakes of the park include the Texas Rat Snake, Rough Earth Snake, and Checkered Garter Snake. Can you name any other lizards and snakes found in the area? Hint: One lizard can change color, and PHP: one snake can produce sound. ROSEBELLY LIZARD Like many birds and mammals, reptiles are predators. Small ones like the Rosebelly Lizard and Rough Earth Snake eat invertebrate animals such as insects. TEXAS SPINY LIZARD Medium-sized snakes such as the Checkered Garter Snake often eat frogs. Larger snakes, including the Texas Rat Snake, typically eat small mammals and GROUND SKINK birds. TEXAS RAT SNAKE Where do reptiles live? The various species occupy almost all kinds of habitats, from dry prairie to moist woodland, and even wetlands and streams. Mitchell Department of Biology Texas Tech University Lubbock, Texas INTRODUCTION In view of the ever-increasing interest in all studies relating to the water resources of Texas, we have found it timely to prepare this guide to the fauna and biological literature of our subterranean waters. The value of such a guide has already been demonstrated by Clark (1966) in his "Publications, Personnel, and Government Organizations Related to the Limnology, Aquatic Biology and Ichthyology of the Inland Waters of Texas". This publication dea ls primarily with inland surface waters, however, barely touching upon the now rather extensive literature which has accumulated on the biology of our subterranean waters. To state a n obvious fact, it is imperative that our underground waters receive the attention due them. They are one of our most important resources. Those subterranean waters for which biological data exi st are very un equally distributed in the state. The best known are those which are acces sible to collection and study via the entrances of caves. Even in cavernous regions there exist inaccessible deep aquifers which have yielded little in formation as yet. Biological data from the underground waters of non-cave rn ous areas are virtually non-existant. -

Biological Opinion Regarding the Issuance of an Endangered Species Act of 1973, As Amended, (Act) Section 10(A)(1)(B) Permit
Biological Opinion for TE-065406-0 This document transmits the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (Service) biological opinion regarding the issuance of an Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, (Act) Section 10(a)(1)(B) permit. The federal action under consideration is the issuance of a permit authorizing the incidental take of the federally listed endangered Houston toad (Bufo houstonensis) under the authority of sections 10(a)(1)(B) and 10(a)(2) of the Act. Boy Scouts of America, Capitol Area Council No. 564 (BSA/CAC) has submitted an application for an incidental take permit under the Act for take of the Houston toad. An Environmental Assessment/Habitat Conservation Plan (EA/HCP) has been reviewed for mitigation acceptability. The implementing regulations for Section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Act, as provided for by 50 CFR 17.22, specify the criteria by which a permit allowing the incidental "take" of listed endangered species pursuant to otherwise lawful activities may be obtained. The purpose and need for the Section 10(a)(1)(B) permit is to ensure that incidental take resulting from the proposed construction and operation of a “High Adventure” camp on the 4,848-acre Griffith League Ranch in Bastrop County, Texas, will be minimized and mitigated to the maximum extent practicable, and that the take is not expected to appreciably reduce the likelihood of the survival and recovery of this federally listed endangered species in the wild or adversely modify or destroy its federally designated critical habitat. The two federally listed species identified within this EA/HCP include the endangered Houston toad (and its designated critical habitat) and the threatened bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). -

Habitat loss is one of the most critical factors affecting the loss of species. However, habitat conservation of many threatened species is performed with incomplete information on habitat requirements and trophic ecology, thus presenting a challenge to designing and implementing recovery plans. 2. The San Marcos salamander (Eurycea nana) is a federally threatened spring-associated organism whose geographic distribution is limited to the headwaters of the San Marcos River in Texas, USA. Although its designated critical habitat includes the headwaters and the first 50 m of the river, little is known of its habitat requirements or co-occurrence with benthic macroinvertebrates and macrophytes. 3. This study examined mesohabitat associations of the salamander and patterns of co-occurrence with macrophytes and benthic invertebrates within its critical habitat. Surveys of mesohabitat characteristics were conducted during a one-year period and data were analysed to assess mesohabitat associations of the San Marcos salamander and patterns of co-occurrence with invertebrates and macrophytes. 4. Salamanders were distributed throughout the critical habitat, but were almost exclusively found in mesohabitats containing cobble and gravel with coverage of Amblystegium and filamentous algae.
