To build the spirit of Christmas, the YAC team had a fun - filled Sunday evening with secret santa games and exchange of gifts. The Clothes donation drive also received a fantastic response. The Founder's Day Celebration will be held in the month of February 2020. The Arambh of the Path Sahib will be on Sunday 2nd February, 2020 at 10:30 am, Navjivan Society, Mumbai Central. We look forward to another eventful year and we do hope the Amil Community will come forward to increase the resources of the KAP. Warm Regards, Dr. Indu Shahani 'JASHAN' to commemorate Sindhiyat in Hyderabad (Sind) Collegiate Board Institutions Catastrophic as it was, losing land and language, so closely related, Hyderabad (Sind) Collegiate Board (HSNCB), from its resurrection in 1949, has had a generation of women and men leading its institutions with drive towards educational excellence while asserting to keep alive the rich traditions of Sindhi: language, culture, ethos, values and way of life. December 11, 2019 witnessed celebration of 'JASHAN', at R D and S H National College, Badnra, on the theme: ''A Typical Sindhi Wedding", organized under the leadership of its dynamic Principal, Dr. Neha Jagtiani. The program was organized in collaboration with Sindhi Chamber of Commerce and students from 13 colleges from Mumbai and Thane District participated. A great bonhomie was witnessed between Trustees, HSNC Board, Principals, Vice Principals of the Board Colleges and Dignitaries. Ethos Literary Award for Poetry Presented Ms. Menka Shivdasani, a well-known Mumbai-based poet, received the prestigious award in Kolkata recently. Menka Shivdasani, poet and journalist, received the Ethos Literary Award for Poetry at the Ethos Literary Festival in Kolkata on November 24, 2019. The festival, organised by Ethos Literary Journal and powered by Hawakal Publishers, took place over two days, on November 23 and 24, and awards were presented to both English and Bengali writers in various categories. Menka's award was for a poet who has authored at least three print books in English. Unfortunately, as reported by Mumbai Mirror, she was unable to bring the award home as the airline lost her luggage. Ltd. It encompasses poems from her previous three books and some new ones. Her first book, Nirvana at Ten Rupees, published in 1990, was described by the critic Bruce King in Modern Indian Poetry in English, (Revised Edition, Oxford University Press, 2001), as being: "A careful selection spanning twelve years' work, it remains one of the best first books of poetry to appear during the 1990s." Menka is co-translator of an anthology of Sindhi Partition poetry, Freedom and Fissures, (Sahitya Akademi, 1998), with Anju Makhija and late Arjan 'Shad' Mirchandani. The book was subsequently translated into both Marathi and Gujarati and January 2020 Amil Samachar published by Sahitya Akademi, taking Sindhi poems on Partition to new readers. She has also edited the English section of Sindhi author Mohan Gehani's bilingual book of poems, Brittle Ice, published by Copper Coin Publishing. Her work with Sindhi literature includes special features for the reputed literary e-journal Muse India (Issue No. 39, Sept-Oct 2011) and for Sahapedia in 2017 (https://www.sahapedia.org/post-partition-sindhi-literature-india).The Sahapedia feature includes video interviews with eminent Sindhi writers such as late Moti and Kala Prakash, Lakhmi Khilani, Dr. Satish Rohra and Pritam Varyani, which were done during her 2011 visit to the Indian Institute of Sindhology. Menka is the editor of two anthologies of contemporary Indian Poetry in English for the American e-zine, www.bigbridge.org and is the editor of an anthology of women's writing for Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women (SPARROW). As Mumbai coordinator of the global movement 100 Thousand Poets for Change, she has been organising an annual poetry festival at Kitab Khana book store since 2012. Her work as a journalist includes stints with various leading publications, such as South China Morning Post in Hongkong and Business India and columns for Hindu Business Line, the Daily Star in Bangladesh and the Pioneer, among other things. The Business Line columns, which focused on the television industry in India in its formative years, ran for more than a decade. Menka is Director of The Source, a content company which conceptualised and produced Times Property and various other publications for the Times of India group for 15 years. She has co-authored / edited 18 books with Raju Kane through The Source,three of which were released by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2018, she wrote Reach for the Stars (Platinum Jubilee edition), the corporate history of Blue Star, founded by Mohan T. Advani. Her book on the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, is expected to be released soon. Shanu founded the unique start-up IndusGuru Network Partners – an online curated market place for Independent Freelance business consultants –had her second event on 27th Nov 2019. It was an insightful event titled Secrets of Successful Scaleup: Enabling Growth in SME Organisations was organised by IndusGuru Network Partners, in collaboration with Wadhwani Foundation Advantage on 27th November and was attended by founders of 100 leading SMEs in the Maharashtra and Gujarat regions. The event discussed the growth challenges and experiences of successful SMEs and was led by an eminent group of Key Note speakers - Mr Ramesh Damani, stock market maven and Chairman of Avenue Supermarkets, the holding company of D-Mart and Dr Niranjan Hiranandani - founder & Chairman of the Hiranandani Group and Former President of the HSNC Board. Mr Ramesh Damani opened the event with an intriguing presentation which was a virtual walk down the history of what made and broke some of the biggest companies. His prized wisdom on investing in a business and not the value of its stock resonated with the audience, as did his insights on the need for transformation and innovation. Dr Niranjan Hiranandani took to the stage next and left the event at a crescendo difficult to match. The audience cheered in agreement on Mr Hiranandani's exuberant take on all that matters in an SME's journey, dream and scale-up, and his advice to SMEs to transform, adapt and astutely focus on finances. The audience also got to hear the Hiranandani Group's stories of achievements and challenges in the words of the man who built the whole empire ground-up.     SINDHI- Story of a Short story MOHAN GEHANI In fact the story is said to be as old as the language itself, but the short story as a separate genre of literature is comparatively a recent form. Its simplicity and short length is deceptive. It is a compact form and calls for rigorous discipline. The sentences have to be chiselled and all strokes are to be convergent to produce the desired effect. Its formats have changed over the years to suit different requirements and modes of artistic expression; but it has all the same retained its distinguishing character. As in other literature of this sub continental languages, in Sindhi also the short stories came via translations of masters like O HENRY, Maupassant , Anton Chekov and numerous other writers including from Indian languages primarily from Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati. Here let me delineate limitations of my narration and at the same time strength of Sindhi short story. It may sound paradoxical. Yes I do confess it is. Though I may desire to speak about Sindhi short story in Sindh today but due to restriction of free exchange of literature I will have to confine myself only to the literary scene in respect of short story in India, during my narration of post partition period. There is no doubt that in India this form has emerged in all its strength and has assumed various forms and formats. Today we are proud to say that Sindhi short story does not lag behind in any sense when compared to short stories of other Indian languages.

    Dr. RANJANI RAMACHANDRAN Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindusthani Classical Music, Sangit Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan Email (Official): [email protected] Dr. Ranjani Ramachandran is a well known khayal vocalist of the Gwalior and Jaipur gharana having trained under eminent gurus including Padmashree Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe and Pandit Kashinath Bodas. Ranjani also received guidance from Vidushi Girija Devi, acquiring a rich repertoire of Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti and Kajri. She has performed in prestigious platforms in India and abroad. Her research interests include music analysis, archiving and interdisciplinary studies. An ex- scholar of the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy, she is a recipient of many awards including the Charles Wallace Research grant from the UK and has been a long time collaborator with ethnomusicologists at the Durham University in UK. She is currently working as an Assistant professor and teaches vocal music at the Department of Hindustani classical music in Sangit Bhavana at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal. Ranjani is a Doctorate in vocal music. Her doctoral thesis focused on studying the stylistic diversity within the Gwalior Gharana through analysis of recordings of a few Gwalior Gharana vocalists from the 20th Century.     Literature and Culture 637 CHAPTER 14 LITERATURE AND CULTURE harwad is the cultural capital of North Karnataka. Ancient temples, Mutts and Agraharas in the D district encouraged the spread of education here and paved the way for the growth of literature and folk arts as well. Pampa was born in Annigeri. It has a tradition of poets starting with Kumara Vyasa, Kanakadasa and Sarvajna down to Shishunala Sharief and Bendre. Institutions like the Training College, Basel Mission, Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Karnatak University and All India Radio Station have in different ways helped the spread of scholarship and creativity. It was here that Aalur Venkata Rao convened the first writers conference in Karnataka. In the field of literature, it was here that the friends circle which developed around Bendre was formed and nurtured. Dharwad is known all over India as a major centre of Hindustani music. Mallikarjuna Mansur hails from here. In theatre too, it was in this district that Sriranga tried his experiments with amateur troupes and professionals like Shirahatti Venkoba Rao, Vamanarao Master and Garud Sadashiva Rao carried on their theatre activities. Professional theatre has received constant support in Hubli city. Many of the theatre artistes from here have made it to the cinema as well. Literature and theatre of the region have played a unique role in national awakening. Temples and fairs of the region have been a fountain of inspiration for the folk arts. In the field of journalism too, many successful experiments have been tried out in Hubli and Dharwad. It was from here that a writer like Galaganath used his pen to awaken nationalist sentiments.

Prizes were presented on 4th, Translators’ Meet was held on 5th and Abhivyakti was held on S5th and 6th. Winners of Translation Prize with Ms. Pratibha Ray, Chief Guest, President and Secretary of Sahitya Akademi On 4th September, the first day of the event started at 5 pm at the Rang Ghar auditorium in Dibrugarh University. The Translation Prize, 2014 was held on the first day itself, where twenty four writers were awarded the Translation Prizes in the respective languages they have translated the literature into. Dr Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi, Eminent Odia writer Pratibha Ray was the chief guest, Guest of Honor Dr. Alak Kr Buragohain, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University and Dr K. Sreenivasarao were present to grace the occasion. After the dignitaries addressed the gathering, the translation prizes were presented to the respective winners. The twenty four awardees were felicitated by a plaque, gamocha (a piece of cloth of utmost respect in the Assamese culture) and a prize of Rs.50, 000.     Literary Culture: Sindhi. Mohan Gehani Literary culture in Sindhi language unlike the culture of contemporary other Indian languages moves on quite different trajectories and planes. The obvious reason of this is that when the rest of India celebrates the Independence Day on the 15th August every year in the collective psyche of Sindhi community in India this day is remembered as a day of partition. This day is Historical watershed in the collective memory of Sindhi speaking people. Every reference point is pre-partition and post partition. In such a situation the main thrust of the present presentation would be on the changed ‘Context’ of Sindhi society its changing contours running parallel in Sindhi Literature. In a way departing from the set structured format of enquiry into various aspects of a ‘Literary Culture.’ Here I have no intention of relating the horrors that partition brought and the arousal of the basic instinct for the physical survival and grim struggle that followed .In this dark hour of despair the political leadership of the community advised the community to merge their distinct identity among the people where ever they found themselves. At the same time the then relief and rehabilitation Minister Mr.K.C Neogy observed , “ that the important point to remember is that Sindhis are threatened with extinction as separate people with their peculiar and distinctive customs and qualities. Thinly spread over India with no place to call their own they cannot hope to retain their language and culture.” As the community slowly recovered from stunned stupor every where they found themselves in a different milieu, their past identities of family, community ties, neighbors and even geography- all identities had been lost.
